Bin 389 was often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. Exemplifying the judicious balance of fruit and oak, Bin 389 highlights the generous mid-palate Penfolds is known for.

My experience with Bin 389 has always been very good (I have not opened this present purchase yet): deep red color with jammy fruit, spicy and peppery. Fruitier and more powerful than the "typical" northern Rhone Syrah.

Received to review for free. Very smooth and rich flavour. Not the cheapest, but it is reflected by the taste

Haven't had this wine in 20 years and it was better than I remembered. Just a great overall wine.

pale straw in colour with green hues. aromas of citrus, guava and passion-fruit with delicate herbal notes precede the alluring palate that entices the senses further with tropical fruits finish.
Dark purple pour with hints of blackberries and Chocolate. Smooth with medium+ tannins....but a bit dry for my palate. I’d like to try this again in 5-10 years.
Penfolds 389 was a special wine for some years shared at many a dinner with a dear friend, until the winery realized Chinese buyers were leveraging price differentials and buying up the market. So Penfolds raised the price on "the little Grange". I really don't have a problem with that, the winery capturing some of that secondary market revenue. Good business move.Except I was buying this at US$27/btl.Is it still a nice wine? Yes.Still a value buy? Well, that's a whole 'nuther question. We buy when there's a 20% off coupon.
Dollar-for-dollar, this is my favorite wine! First learned of it while working in Sydney, Australia. Ready to drink upon opening and gets better the longer you take to drink it.
Very good wine. It is full bodied. Definitely take the time to let it open as it does have many layers. Overall I really enjoyed it. The down fall is there are just as good of wines, for half the price.
If you are looking for a Very Special Gift or Something to drink for a Special Occasion. Penfold 389 Absolutely Outstanding Australian Bottle of Red. Quiet literally the intense fruit flavors will knock you over. It is a Big Bold Full On Barossa Red. You need to experience this Red at least once.
Why buy a Grange for $900+ when you can get the next best thing for 1/20th of the price. Bin 389 is just like a Penfolds Grange without the price tag. In fact some would suggest the 2012 Bin 389 trumps the Grange. This is a full-bodied Cabernet Shiraz blend where both varietals blend effortlessly. Vibrant, with a tangy freshness augmented by sculptured tannins, lively acidity, and respectful oak.
