David Sly, Decanter Cabernet Sauvignon has provided a high point in Penfolds tastings through recent years, and this beauty seduces from the first whiff. Showing note-perfect varietal aromas, with a breeze of ripe purple fruit over fresh, leafy herbs and rich red earth, the perfume is full and persistent. The entry is sharp and arresting, with fruit purity on point and channelled down the right corridors by supple tannins and a clean acid seam. It shows exemplary balance through to the long finish. 98/100 Points. Tyson Stelzer, Halliday Wine Companion Nuances of menthol and eucalypt not often seen in Bin 407, perhaps the presence of Padthaway taking a stronger lead this vintage? This might also be the explanation, too, for a more saline feel to the palate. All the classic blackcurrant, cassis and roast capsicum expected of Bin 407 hold through a finish of impressive line and length, sustained by strong, fine-grained, mineral tannins. 94/100 Points.

This is one of my all time favourite Red wines. It’s consistently good, really well priced and easy to purchase at any good bottle shop. Definitely the sort of wine I’ll take to a dinner party or when i just want a nice red to drink on a cold night.

Absolutely fantastic wine, well rounded and very versatile when pairing with food. Works equally well over an afternoon cheese platter as it does with rare cooked meats or rich, spicy dinners and didn’t give us a headache after a glass or two either. Excellent reasonably priced gift for party hosts that enjoy or are curious about red wine.

My Go To Cabernet Sauvignon, I never let the price of it get in the way! From the tannins to the finish, this stuff is the best!
I’ve been to the Barrossa valley in Australia on a wine tour but we did not get to stop at Penfolds. However, I have heard a lot about how good Penfolds wines are including this cab. This was a good wine but I’m not sure it’s worth the $70 price tag. I am sure I will not buy it again but if someone offers it to me at a dinner I will not turn it down. :)It’s a good wine but too light of a taste for me. I like bold, dry wines.
Penfolds 389 was a special wine for some years shared at many a dinner with a dear friend, until the winery realized Chinese buyers were leveraging price differentials and buying up the market. So Penfolds raised the price on "the little Grange". I really don't have a problem with that, the winery capturing some of that secondary market revenue. Good business move.Except I was buying this at US$27/btl.Is it still a nice wine? Yes.Still a value buy? Well, that's a whole 'nuther question. We buy when there's a 20% off coupon.
Great Cab Sauv. Default wine for Christmas Day as a treat. Highly recommended.
If you are looking for a Very Special Gift or Something to drink for a Special Occasion. Penfold 389 Absolutely Outstanding Australian Bottle of Red. Quiet literally the intense fruit flavors will knock you over. It is a Big Bold Full On Barossa Red. You need to experience this Red at least once.
My parents opened this bottle at casual family dinner after receiving it is a gift. Neither them nor I had any idea how much it was worth though so this rating is not price-related. It was an absolutely spectacular bottle of wine. If only we'd realised it's value maybe we'd have appreciated it even more
Why buy a Grange for $900+ when you can get the next best thing for 1/20th of the price. Bin 389 is just like a Penfolds Grange without the price tag. In fact some would suggest the 2012 Bin 389 trumps the Grange. This is a full-bodied Cabernet Shiraz blend where both varietals blend effortlessly. Vibrant, with a tangy freshness augmented by sculptured tannins, lively acidity, and respectful oak.
