Amazing reel. The CFTII4000 was slightly smaller than expected, but pairs beautifully with my smaller saltwater rod that I use to target schoolie size striped bass. Somehow seems to cast further than larger reels I have. Very smooth retrieve. I like that there is no anti-reverse switch to accidentally get turned off. The bail opens with a very satisfying click, and closes beautifully. This reel is made of a very smooth material that feels very high quality. I really like the way this reel looks and feels, even the handle is incredible. Now I need a CFTII1000 for my panfish/trout rod, and a CFTII5000 for my larger saltwater rod. I would love to use these reels exclusively.

I just got 2 new Conflict 2's. A 2500 and 2000. My first Penn's were 2 Battle 3's and I was Hooked! So 95% of my fishing is in fresh water but I moved and live near the coast in SC. I had no salt water rigs. What you will like if you do most of your fishing in fresh water but can go salt anytime.....is where the Conflict shines. They are very lite weight and with paddle handles you will feel right at home fishing for Bass. I have 2 Abu Garcia rigs and a Shimano Vanford for ultra lite fishing. What surprised me was how butter smooth the Conflicts are and could be argued the best feel and longer casting. Matched with the right rod and line the Conflict 2 delivers the best price vs quality of any out there. Bought these reels in various sizes and all have problems staying smooth. You have to clean and lube after every use. All my other penn reels get abused in comparison. I just rinse and use them again later. Have had some of them for forty years and they still are going strong. ( Remember the old green Penn reels, Teflon drags,heavy) Conflict is lightweight and works good as long as you stay on top of maintenance. That is not why I buy Penn reels. I buy them because they can take the abuse. Not the Conflict.

Inshore gear has to stand up to 2lb specks and 10lb reds and maybe even a 15lb last fish on the same trip where I fish in South Texas. Heck, we may even get into a nice snook or tarpon. I want my reel to be light to reduce fatigue, consistent drag, well sealed, lots of line, and easy to maintain. This reel has it all. I feel as confident handling a 10lb red as I do a 3lb trout. I currently have mine in a 7’6” Calico Jack MH rod. Although overkill for specks in most instances, it throws 1/4oz jig heads well with soft baits and still handles larger 3/4oz baits with ease, even when near structure. My bait casters get used for most hard bait duties. Some reels are lighter, some are smoother, others cost less. When you hook into a really nice trout or redfish, all you want to have is confidence in your gear. Try this reel and I think you will agree that year after year, it will serve you well and give you the peace of mind to keep depending on it.

I currently have 2x Penn spinfisher v 3500's, a Penn Slammer iii 3500, Penn spinfisher v 4500, Pflueger President XT 3500, Abu Garcia Orra inshore 4000, and Shimano Stradic CI4 2500 that all serve in similar capacities to the Conflict II. The Conflict II has proven to be durable, lightweight (by saltwater standards), tough and just plain fun to use. I feel confident every time that I pick it up. It is in the middle of price range for inshore specific spinning reels and ideally suited for trout, redfish, flounder, and many other species commonly found along the Texas Gulf Coast. I own two of these reels, the 4K and the 5k. They are great reels as long as you take care of them. They can be susceptible to corrosion because there is no sealing in these reels so after each saltwater excursion I’d highly recommend cleaning them off with light spray of water and wd40 or displacement spray. They aren’t the most rugged but they are very light and very smooth and for me that’s the trade off. I have plenty of other reels that are sealed or very saltwater resistant but I think it’s good to have at least one finesse reel in the mix. Hope this review helped in some way. Tight Lines!!!
First impression after opening the box, slick! easy on the eyes! light! sturdy!put the drag to my ear and turned spool, it sang to me! put the handle on at firstlooking at it I was lil concerned that i may not like the handle but soon as I put my fingers on it to urn it i was like WOW ! the ergonomics of the handle were 10 outta 10 it felt awesome I layed it beside my old Penn 1000 spinning reel to see how much bigger the handle was and it wasnt that much larger, that old Penn has served me for almost 20 years, I am a hardcore Penn fan and loyal customer ! Congrats Penn !! you understand us fisherman ! looking forward to my new Penn Conflict 2000 to arrive .Mad Greek Outdoors
Bought in December 2018, it was stored inside until the end of April 2019. Used it maybe 1/4 the time I was fishing along with a bunch of my other rods, so it has barely been used and the handle is so hard to turn. Something is hitting every revolution of the spool, pretty hard. I've used dozens of reels from $60-$100 and they all last at least a full season of fishing. This $200 reel, the most expensive one I've ever bought couldn't handle a couple walleye and pike and I was gonna use this on smallmouth and steelhead.I regret the purchase, it feels like cheap plastic around a solid main gear and I don't think it can even handle the power you can crank with that drag without something giving. I’m giving it 4 stars just because the line roller was not spinning in the beginning and was planning to send it back. TD advised me to apply some oil but didn’t work. Decided to take the line roller apart to oil the components, it started to spin but not constantly. I thought maybe I just need to break it in. I used it for Tog fishing and it did loosened up. Drag is strong enough to keep the Tog out of the rocks. If you’re familiar with Tautog they are strong fish. I would wish the line roller has a bearing instead of a plastic bushing and would prefer a longer reel handle for leverage. As of the moment I trying to figure out how to upgrade the bearing and the handle. I fished 4 hours straight almost holding tackle all that time. Being born and raised in Philly, I was born a Penn Reels customer and own quite a few from International 50tw’s down to some tiny spinfishers. In recent years I’ve been skeptical since most of the products are no longer manufactured in the US, but after a few months bass fishing with my new Conflict II 2500 and hitting the flats with my new Slammer 260 I must admit that I am impressed. No issues with either and living up to the legacy of their vintage counterparts. Although I would much rather see them produced and serviced on hunting Park ave., I really can’t think of anything negative to say about this new generation to this point.
