I purchased a VISX20 and couldn’t be happier with it. I’ve fished Penn reals my whole life and this one didn’t disappoint. Landed a 275 Bluefin, a 202 bluefin and can’t wait to take it long range for some big big yellowfin. I also purchased a 50 for fishing them in the dark praying to hook and land a 300lb bluefin.Wish me luck and thank you Penn designers for such a great reel.

I have the 12, 16 and 20 VISX, the 12 is my favorite of the three, so far I haven’t caught a fish it couldn’t handle. I feel like I’m cheating most of the time. I use the reel for bottom fishing mostly. Never had a big snapper or grouper give this reel a run. Still waiting to get that big fish for a real test. Still waiting for a captain to let me troll with it on a trip. Hands down the best reel for me.

I've been fishing Penn International reels for over 40 years and they've never let me down. I've just started using the new 20 VISX reels and they have the usual high quality craftmanship you'd expect from Penn.

Usually, I fish 30VISX and 50VISX on long range tuna trips out of San Diego. I always take a 16VISX loaded with 80 lb. braid "just in case" we need "stealth" tackle. January, 2019 on the Excel, was just such a trip. The bite was really touchy but there were big yellowfin around. The Captain said that we could drop down to 80 lb. gear if we wanted, to try to get a bite. Out came my 16VISX with 80, drifting a sardine back. BIG swirl and line was peeling off the reel. The fish stopped just before the line was all gone and the fight began. Several times around the boat and two hours later a 277 lb. yellowfin was on the deck. The 16VISX was ready for more.
It's a beast. Bought this for cow tuna fishing. It's a Penn so you know the quality is there. Service it correctly and this reel will outlast you and will be passed down to the next generation.
I now have 2 x 30w. And 2 x 20 wides. They shift well the gearing is good for both quick retrieving whin needed on marlin and if you want to say hi to that big Jew fish that has been eating all your bait or even drag up a shark or to they don’t back down. I truly expected to wreck the drag in one of my 30 w. I fish the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. This last season I hauled in more fish than you can count. Still every reel is still in grate shape and I am ordering more right now that’s y I’m on here. I don’t do a lot of reviews but in this case I’ll make an exception. Flat out grate I’ve wrecked a lot of good reels in my days and know far to well how rough the way I fish is on them. For me to not brake one is amazing. Take your favorite rod hook a 300 + new fish ... MoreI now have 2 x 30w. And 2 x 20 wides. I bought this and used it on an 8 day long range trip out of San Diego. Caught several large home guard yellowtail at Alijos Bank. Has the Visx 16 setup with 80 lb, its a wonderful reel and lightweight for the size.
The Penn International VI series is one of the largest and best offshore casting and trolling reels available, coming in a variety of models to provide the right features and sizes for all types of deep-sea fishing adventures. Keeping with tradition, the Penn International VI is made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the USA just like all the other International series reels for the past 50 years.
I bought my VISX 16 approximately 18 months ago and I have caught tuna, dolphin, kingfish, and sailfish, all with ease. Where the reel has excelled is on bottom fish. I have caught huge red snapper and gag grouper with this reel. I realize it may notbe designed specifically for bottom fishing, butthis reel has more grit than any I used before. It honestly feels like it will lift the bottom.
