I use these for flathead fishing. Smooth casting, nice loud clicker and they hold up for many seasons. Another quality reel from Penn.

Nice reel. Drag is great and plenty of power for big catfish. Only functional issue is, the clicker drag can not be reduced below a VERY stiff setting, requiring several pounds of force to pull out line - enough force that several fish tagged the bait and dropped it. Wanted to use like a live liner function but it is too stiff for moderate current catfish. Dropped one star because the level wind piles up more line on the right side of the reel than the left. Line on the right was at the outer ring on the spool and it was one full ring less on the left. That's close to 1/4" out of "level". Never had a level wind do this before. Impact is, you probably lose several hundred feet of line capacity.

A great clean , smooth reel that has an outstanding reel/ turn ratio.
This reel was a disappointment. The free spool lever was loose and when I tried to tighten the screw to snug up the lever to the reel body, it broke. Obviously cross threaded at the factory. Only made about 50 casts and found the line guide wobbly on the upper reel guide rod. Also I had to crank down the adjustment all the way just to throw a 3 hook pompano rig with 3 ounces. Might be a good reel for jigging or trolling but not for surf casting.
These are really great reels for the price. Have caught several large catfish (85+lbs) on them without a problem
Very smooth. I got it to go off shore last week to catch seabass. I love penn products
This is an awesome reel. Light but this reel packed with muscle for the big fish.
I just ordered 2 of the 50-s. The rod clamps are the wrong size, the holes on the reel centered 1 and 3/4 " while on the rod clamp 1 and 3/8". I wrote to the customer service, they sent me to Penn. Will see if Penn will solve my problem. Be aware this problem, possibly all they big reel have the same problem.
Reel is very good in all ways except how i keep my thumb. It gets in the way of a smooth return when reeling line back in . I have to keep my thumb to the side. I do not have this problem with the three Penn 320 reels i also have
