This is a magnificent lens from Pentax, easily the best they have introduced in many years. It is very well built, sharp from corner to corner even wide open, gives bokeh to die for, and focuses quickly, quietly, and accurately! IMO it stacks up well optically against the Zeiss Otus, long considered the best high end 50/1.4 lens available today. Yes, it is heavy compared to lesser 50/1.4 lenses, but for a lens of this quality, that comes with the territory. I rate it as a good value despite its premium price.

After using this lens for about two weeks, I can say this is perhaps the best Pentax lens I've ever owned. The sharpness is so powerful, I've even been using it for macro shots. The MTF charts for this lens will tell you its excellent below F/2 but I find it a bit soft in that range. It's supremely sharp around F/5.6, even at the edges. The AF is very quick too. The lens is very heavy, relatively speaking, but it's what you should expect for such high quality lens. I can only hope that Pentax will continue to produce more lens in the star series like this one.

I bought this 50mm lens back in 2021. I have the first generation Pentax K-1, and I updated the firmware to support this lens. I have had no problems or issues with the lens. I mainly do mountain landscapes, since I have backpacked for over 30 years in the Washington State Cascade and Olympic mountains. So I have taken this lens on several day hikes and on a trip to Maui. This is fantastic lens. The attached pictures have been resized to a much smaller size to aid in the file transfer. And all were hand held, no tripod used.

This lens works up to all the great review. However, it took me few hour of testing time to realize - it requires latest firmware on camera. Almost returned it as bad copy. Luckily asked community first.Older cameras like k3ii might even overexpose with old firmware.Newer like K1 - will misfocus badly with firmware below 1.50
Great lens, beautiful images and the condition was like new. One complaint, but not enough to drop a star, autofocus was sometimes inaccurate. But I attribute that to Pentax autofocus.
Tack sharp from corner to corner. Gorgeous bokeh and colour reproduction. Caps and lens hood go on and off easily. Smooth rotation on focus ring. Quick quiet and accurate auto focus. A heavy lens but it feels solid and strong, and balances well on a K-1. Great aesthetics and loving the all-weather capability.
entax have always offered fine, compact lenses and the first impression here is that the new 50mm lens is instead very heavy and very bulky, weighing in at a substantial 910g without hood or caps. However, once fitted to the K-1 II, and by easy inference the K-1 as well, it balances amazingly well. It no longer feels or looks out of place, just very well suited. The longer it us used, the more appropriate it feels on the full frame bodies. There is a provided petal lens hood that bayonets cleanly into position. In common with many Pentax hoods, there is a small removable window that enables polarising filters to be rotated whilst the hood is still in position. Within the bayonet fit is a standard 72mm filter thread. Within the bayonet fit is a standard 72mm filter thread. The rest of the front of the lens is filled with the large front element, coated with a Fluorine Super-Protect layer to repel grease and moisture. The lens is also coated throughout using Pentax's new HD multi- coating plus their Aero-Bright II nano technology to eliminate flare and ghosting.Optical construction is 15 elements in 9 groups, a long way from the traditional 7/6 construction. There are also 3 Anomalous Dispersion and 1 Aspherical elements. Clearly a serious bit of glass. The bayonet mount is the usual Pentax quality, secured in this instance with no less than 7 screws. Many lenses have only three screws to retain their mounts, so hopefully this is indicative of a very strong and long lasting mount for this heavy lens. There are no handling issues – the lens operates flawlessly and is a total pleasure to use. AF is fast, balance is excellent and the all weather construction gives confidence to keep on shooting regardless of the weather.
This lens is very sharp, probably sharper than any other lens I own, which includes the 77 limited. Possibly the best aspects though are the colour rendition and bokeh which brings the wow factor. I did have to correct for back focus, so I'd recommend anyone buying this lens to check for focus plus update camera to latest software. Perfect lens? Very close. A slight magenta cast wide open, but gone at 2.8. Expect this lens will be even better paired with the new ke iti.
I had bought the lens with a reasonable 2nd hand market price. This lens is great when will raking with my Pentax K1 body. The finishing of this lens is solid with touch in every details especially perfect to work with the lens hood. The quality of the pictures is excellent and same as the other star (*) lens. I would recommend to all Pentaxs who love the colour tone generate by Pentax.
Why pay this amount when if you had a C or N they would charge 50%. Sigma do but this Pentax is a classic. I bought it because my favourite lens is my 300DA*. One touch in the store and I was sold. I am super happy with my 24-70 but this HD 50 is so tack sharp you also need another graphics card to keep up. Beautiful build and proper all weather to go with my K1. F1.4 will make me think about focus accuracy (as per the film days. Quality incomparable with the old FA50 1.4 which was soft until f5.6 and then mediocre this hit the nail from 1.4.Back to grass roots normal aspect photography making you plan and frame your image. Remember that only can that the shot once.
