I own a few prime lenses including the classic Pentax SMC 50mm 1.7, and this betters it in every way optically. It's sharper, has no real problems with flare or ghosting, and the out of focus areas are better too. It is surprisingly well made. Don't be fooled by the plastic construction and plastic bayonet. It is well built and assembled using engineering grade plastics. The auto focus is rapid, and surprisingly quiet. I've read exaggerated claims from others about it being very noisy. Yo my ears it isn't! Understandably for a screw drive auto focus, it's not silent - but it cannot be described as noisy - and I'm a professional musician and semi-pro photographer. No regrets

I bought my first Pantax, a K-70 with the kit lens 18-135 mm only a few mounts ago . So, my experience with Pentax is limited. I thought I would buy the smc DA 50mm f/1.8 for those closeup pictures with nice blurred background.Lens looks and feels cheap which would be OK if the pictures where at least sharp. Similar pictures with the 18-135 kit lens are better and sharper on auto settings.Auto focusing with these lens and camera for portraits is so jumpy and difficult. I have not tried the manual focus to see if it makes any difference. However, I do not see any improvement over the kit lens. For me, it is not worth the investment.

I love this lens! I have 4 Pentax DSLR's, an ist DL, a K20D, a K7 and a K5iis. This lens operates equally well on each one as it should, and gives vey clear pictures with zero vignetting. Capable of low light photography without having to crank the ISO or use such a slow shutter speed that you need a tripod. The 52mm filter size is common enough that finding an array of filter for this lens is not difficult. This lens renders a wonderful geometric bokeh. If you use manual focus the focus ring is wide with positive texturing that allows for precise adjustment with no creep. This is not a toy lens, this lens has the potential to be a serious piece of gear in your photographic kit. The only thing negative I have found is the lens can be, at times, slow to focus. ... I bought this as my first prime lens for my new K-3 II. I am very impressed with the quality of the optics, especially considering the wallet-friendly price. Sure, the body and mount is plastic, but if it does have a plasticy feel at all, it's a quality plasticy feel. The focus ring moves smoothly and has a large range of motion so you can finely set the focusing. The autofocus is good using the in-body focusing mechanism (though it does bring out the loudness of the body motor). The picture is definitely soft at wide aperture, but as other reviewers said, it improves significantly by f/2.8 and by f/5 (or lower) it's perfectly sharp. If you're looking for a lightweight, reliable lens to keep on your camera, you can't go wrong with this lens considering the price. I ... MoreI bought this as my first prime lens for my new K-3 II. I would give it 4.5 if I could because of the wide open softness, but I think the economical price compensates. #sweepstakes
The only other 50mm prime lens I have used that I can compare this to is the well-rated Sony 50mm 1.8 which I used for 2 years on a Sony a55. I just got this Pentax DA 50mm 1.8 with free shipping off bhphotovideo's site, to use with my new K30 camera body. The Sony sells for $$, so they are both currently reasonably close in price. From the few hundred photos I have taken, I will give you my first impressions. First off, I noticed the Pentax does not have something rattling inside like the Sony is known to have, and it is even smaller and lighter since it doesn't have a cheap sounding SAM motor inside it like the Sony did. The Pentax is screw driven and is rather noisy but I knew that before I bought it. It focuses quick and just as fast if not quicker than a Pentax ... The Pentax is screw driven and is rather noisy but I knew that before I bought it. It focuses quick and just as fast if not quicker than a Pentax 18-55 dal kit lens. The Sony's plastic mount never gave me a problem, so I don't expect the Pentax to either. Though they are both nearly all plastic in construction, the Pentax has a much higher quality feel to it. As far as chromatic aberrations go, at f1.8 (wide open aperture) the Sony would give me some green aberrations in very high contrast shots, whereas in similar scenarios the Pentax gives slight purple fringing (which are easier to correct in photoshop, in my opinion). At f2.0, the Pentax still has very minimal purple aberrations and only in super high contrast situations. By f2.8 they appear to be gone. I don't notice a hood to help too much since the front lens element is already recessed quite a bit. The Pentax gives me plenty of sharpness at f1.8 as long as the K30's autofocus system nails the shallow depth of field correctly. My K30 can slightly miss once in a while. As you approach f4 aperture it gets very sharp! I was playing around in a dark room with all the windows shut and lights off, and the 11:00am daylight getting through the blinds was the only source of illumination. With my K30 I was still able to get off perfectly usable shots. I may never buy a flash since this lens combined with a K30 is great for available light shooting. And the bokeh (out of focus background blur) this lens produces is superb, which is a large reason why I chose it.There is some confusion about if this lens has quick shift manual focus, and I am pretty sure it doesn't since it is resistant to turn and doesn't say anything about it in the operating manual. This means in order to be able to turn the manual focus ring you must turn the camera body's switch to manual focus to unlock it, and it will not automatically override like some lenses can. After you flip the switch, though, this lens is a pleasure to manual focus. It is firm, smooth, and you get about turn from minimum focus distance to infinity.I would say this lens is overall on par if not slightly better than the Sony 50mm f1.8 in some regards, so I recommend this lens if you have a Pentax DSLR and you want a brand new low light lens with autofocus. I would hurry and buy it while it's still on sale, since I think its original retail of $250 is too expensive. I was very tempted to buy an older manual focus lens for much less money but there are times when autofocus is a necessity. Since there aren't many other brand new autofocus lenses at this price, I think the price I paid is fair enough to have a decent autofocus prime lens for my Pentax.
It is a fast lens that is great for indoor portraits. Rarely have to use the flash to take indoor portraits which is nice to take advantage of natural light sources. Nice range of depth of field because of the wide aperture which can create sharp or shallow backgrounds which is very useful in taking landscapes and personal portraits. You can get very creative with your photography by changing the aperture settings. It is very easy to carry the lens on camera because of its feather light weight.
My Camera: Pentax K-S1 Knock at the door and the friendly postman handed it over to me. Initially the size of the box shocked me, looked like the box of a Gameboy SP. After ripping off the packaging (which was sturdy and secure.) I opened up the box and was met by a small lens, initially at first glance it looks like a toy lens. I removed my Sigma 70-300mm bulky lens I use for bird shoots and other things and fitted on this small but extremely light lens, weight difference was noticeable straight away. It auto focuses rather well, a tad noisy but that is something I can live with. Picture quality is superb, perfect for my uses of shooting pictures of the kittens and some light video work on my K-S1. For the price of 84.99 I can this a bargain, many shops sell this ... The main reasons I bought this lens were it's fast (f/1.8), it's modestly priced, and it's reasonably light and compact- the rest was hope. Here's what I've experienced so far:It's fairly sharp with a 16 MP sensor, and it seems to not have any major problems for moderately well to dimly lit areas. It doesn't do well, though, with shots that have bright point sources such as headlights or astronomical objects. Apparently this is from internal lens reflections. It's extremely difficult getting a sharp focus on bright point sources making it a pain for astronomic shots, and a bigger pain with headlights and such in the frame. It's good for portraits and family shots where you have a bit of distance to your subjects (crop factor 1.5). It's mounted most of the time ... Wonderful little and inexpensive lens for the price. The mount is plastic but I've had no problems in 8 years of use. The focus is fast, the bokeh is very nice and the colors it renders is superior to lenses of other brands I've compared it to. (My other third party Pentax compatible lenses)
