New, this is a 500 lens which is more than I would choose to spend, bearing in mind that it is being used with a great but 14 year-old K10D by a pretty average photographer. It came without a hood so I wouldn't have been surprised to find a few surface marks etc. Yet so far it seems to be good as new. When I last bought lenses they were noisy even if the quality was good. This is nearly silent, which is handy when photographing wildlife. I was particularly tempted by this focal length because it's very close to a favourite lens from way back which I loved for its great versatility - landscape to portrait all in one. So my plan is to take just this lens on holiday (whenever that is!). In my "time away" from active photography, I've been astonished at how Pentax seem ... I saw this coming when the major retailers her seemed to decide only Nikon and Canon would be invited to the party and even major companies like Sony and Panasonic seem to be shut out.. Whatever the reason, it's not consumer choice!

A great lens in very good condition, almost Mint. And I'm enjoying usig it, but highly priced for what it is. For example, I have a Tamron 18-200 brand new that matches optical performance, although it's not WR rated. Happy with my purchase thought, as it's lighter to carry around than the Tamron 200 and very fast to focus AF

If you don't want to carry several lenses with you that lens is the choice for good average results. This is actually improved in optics18-55mm kit. Pros: Compact size - For a superzoom lens, it's actually quite compact, noticeably smaller and lighter than any 18-2xx zoom out there. It is weather sealing and that makes it perfect for holidays and travelling in any demanding weather conditions. Fast auto focus and at a reasonable price (I bought it for $199 on E-bay). Cons: Sharpness outside the center is poor with visible distortion and CA. Conclusion: Great lens for general purposes and no brain use situations.

I have this lens and I love it. No it is not a prime it is a zoom. This beats the 18-55 Kit lens hands down. The lens is surprisingly sharp. Yes you do some distortion at the wide end but nothing that can be fixed in post and it is only at the very corners. When shooting in JPEG this can be corrected with the in camera settings. This lens is small, lightweight and the focus is quick and silent. It is so quiet sometimes I can barely hear it focus. It is easy to shoot handheld. The 5.6 aperture setting at the 135 end is a bit slow but for it to be smaller the lens would have to be larger and more expensive. This is simple lens physics-based which means the smaller the aperture the larger the lens. With the higher ISO capabilities of newer DSLR'S the slower apertures ... This is simple lens physics-based which means the smaller the aperture the larger the lens. With the higher ISO capabilities of newer DSLR'S the slower apertures have become less of an issue. The weather sealing of this lens is a great asset. You can shoot in almost any weather condition and not worry. There are no other lens of this focal range in this price range that offer this. The lens does have some limitations, all lens do, but nothing serious. Stop the lens down a little at the longer end and you will be fine. In very bright contrast conditions you may find some small purple fringing at the wider apertures. This can be fixed by stopping down or with the on camera settings or very easy in post processing. I have the DA*16-50 as well and I still goto this lens. When on a quick hike or walk I will pair this with the HD 55-300 WR and I only need two lens to cover any focal length I would need. Overall this is an extremely versatile, lightweight lens that is a joy to use on my K3. It is an exceptional value for the price. I rate this lens 4.5 out of 5.
That's right, not to big, and not to small. I used the 18-55 kit lens for about ten years on my K-100D. However, after moving up to the K-50, I noticed that my old 18-55 was getting a little stiff on the focus-not to mention noisy. Must have had something to do with falling three feet to the ground on the side of the lens.So I pulled the trigger on the 18-135, and I have been very impressed. Very sharp and the extra reach lets me get superb photos of birds and landscapes. It's also a very good a portrait lens...extremely sharp at 40-90 range. Even though it has the same 3.5-5.6 aperture range, it sure does seem to me that I can shoot at much faster shutter speeds than I could with my old lens. All in all, it really woke up my new K-50. Great lens! Pentax forums have given this lens some of the highest ratings. Although Pentax may be several years behind Sony and Canon when it comes to technology, Pentax prime lenses still deliver high-quality images for a fraction of their price. The best thing about Pentax is the quality glass it offers at a reasonable price. It's a small price to pay for a camera that's a little behind the leading competitors.
Nice optics though soft at 70mm. A GENERALLY well made lens that performs nicely as an everyday shooter. So why one star? Unfortunately, this nice lens was designed with the horribly unreliable (my opinion) SDM motors and as opposed to other SDM lenses this one has no fall back to screw-drive. When the SDM stops working you're dead in the water with a nice looking paperweight. I purchased this silly lens at $$on sale and now see what a waste that was. I knew about the SDM problems as mention of them is hard to avoid in Pentax photo forums. I figured that Pentax had probably fixed the problem by now and went ahead with the purchase. A couple years into use and the lens started acting up and failing to focus until it was exercised for a while. Then it basically quit. ... MoreNice optics though soft at 70mm. A couple years into use and the lens started acting up and failing to focus until it was exercised for a while. Then it basically quit. It is useless now and I purchased a Sigma to replace it.Another point to consider is that I don't think Pentax has introduced any new SDM lenses in quite a while. Maybe they have quietly given up on SDM?Oh, and don't think that manual focus is any consolation. The focus throw on the 17-70 is so short and lacking in damping that it's basically useless for manual work. You can ignore me, but I'm willing to bet you will regret it.
I own and use mostly DA Limited prime lenses, which I love for their quality and compactness. However, some time sightseeing in rainy Japan convinced me I needed a weather resistant walkaround zoom that would cover 90% of the focal ranges I need without having to swap lenses in bad weather. I had bought this lens for my son as part of a K-30 kit, and tried it on my K-5. I was impressed. When I bought the K-3, the 18-135 came at such a good price that it would have been silly to refuse it. Intrinsically, the K-3 has much better resolution than the K-5, due to the higher pixel density and the removal of the hardware anti-aliasing filter. So it is a tough test for a lens. I was very pleased to see the results: increadibly sharp near centre, great colour, great punch. ... MoreI own and use mostly DA Limited prime lenses, which I love for their quality and compactness. I was very pleased to see the results: increadibly sharp near centre, great colour, great punch. It's a little soft near the edges, but I can live with that on a walkaround zoom. CA is also noticeable near the edges at the longer focal lengths, but not at the short end. The weather sealing and inbuilt very quiet and fast DC motor are real bonuses. Overall, this is a MUCH better lenses than the technical reviews suggest. And this from someone who normally prefers to shoot quality primes.
Just upgraded two steps in quality to this lens. Wish I'd found it years ago. MUCH BETTER low-light photos compared to the "kit" 18-55mm len. Lens coating and weather-protections are plus-plus. Autofocus is impressive: So quiet, fast, and very precise to fields of focus. Areas closer to the corners of photos were sharper with no distracting distortions. The lens functions are 100% compatible to my Pentax K10D after software update 1.30 installed. It weighs is a little more, but it makes the photos professional quality, so it is worth it to me because the more dynamic zoom range of 18-135mm let me take two lens out of my camera bag. I plan to use just this one lens for 99% of the ~10,000 photos I average taking every year. After seeing it's performance, I decided I ... MoreJust upgraded two steps in quality to this lens. I held off for a long time before giving this lens a try, due to the poor review on Photozone. I balanced that against good reviews here, a pretty solid Popular Photography review, and many good reviews on Pentax forums. I have a few zooms (the WR version of the 18-55, Tamron 17-50, pentax DA50-200 and Pentax DA55-300) and a collection of Pentax Limiteds (15, 21, 40, and 70). I bought this for travel and hiking (when weather is an issue). I shoot both DNG and JPGs and turn on the corrections on my K5 for JPGS, which takes care of aberrations and distortion very well. I tested the lens against many of the above in real world situations and the 18-135 holds up very well. I have only had this lens for a month, but I have already gotten many very nice captures with it. If you use it within its limits, it is an excellent all around lens and one I will likely keep on my camera most of the time and switch to a specific Limited as needed. I am very happy with my decision to buy this lens!
