I had been toying with buying a macro lens for a while. I was looking for a tripod and saw the lens on sale at B&H. A quick search on the Pentax forum confirmed that this was an exceptional lens, so I made the splurge. It's well built and razor sharp, coupled with nice Bokeh, that functions well in both macro and non-macro modes. It would have been nice if it had an autofocus limiter, but there is a function on the KP that can limit focus search. Also, a trick I learned on the Pentax site. The lens will handle a full-frame camera, but if you use it on an APS-C sensored camera, you can use a 49mm to 29mm filter adapter as a lens hood. All in all, a great lens, made better by being priced like a good aftermarket lens. This lens is a true creativity facilitator! Since I got it, I have been having so much fun playing. This lens provides super crisp and sharp detail. It's like walking around with a magnifying glass. I've been enjoying using it for macro purposes. It is also working great as a telephoto lens for birds and pets in the yard. I tried a few portraits with it and wow, also great! The bokeh on this is really nice as I've been playing around with photos of ice this winter. I mostly use this in manual focus mode and am pleased with the ability to finely dial in where I want my focus on tiny subjects. This lens is letting me do what I have always tried to do with my other lenses. It's my most used and favorite!

Yes, they are still making them like they used to. The construction quality of this lens is every bit as good as the construction quality of the Pentax Spotmatic camera that I remember wanting to purchase while a member of the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club but alas, I spent my money like all sailors do while on liberty and I still kick myself. This lens is ideally suited for the kind of stock photography I do with my Pentax K-50 that I now own also purchased from B&H. Based on my experience so far, It promises to last for several more generations of Pentax cameras so long as Pentax maintains its tradition of limiting equipment obsolescence. I am still using M42 screw mount film lenses with my K-50. Try that with other brands that expect you to purchase all new lenses ... MoreYes, they are still making them like they used to. I go with what works for me, not what others tell me I should own.

This lens is everything you would expect from a quality lens from Pentax, super sharp and the bokeh is beautiful. Now with the latest firmware for the K1 II and the K3 III you get focus limiting - WOW! Focus limiting makes macro shooting a real pleasure and for pictures with foreground detail there is no more hunting for the focus you desire.
I am having a lot of fun with this lens. Using it with a K3, I am able to get decent photos of insects in the field under challenging conditions - wind, fast moving insects, and low light (I do use a light ring). Because of the quality of this lens, and the resolution/image stabilization of the K3, I am able to get decent handheld photos of tiny planthoppers and aphids. The depth of field issue when shooting at short focal distances causes focus problems, of course. Although I do not use focus stacking software, layering selected in -focus components of a subject shot in burst mode is my low tech means to correct out of focus areas. For me, using this lens in the field involves a lot of trial and error, plenty of missed and unusable shots, and luck due to movement ... MoreI am having a lot of fun with this lens. For me, using this lens in the field involves a lot of trial and error, plenty of missed and unusable shots, and luck due to movement of the subject and the surface the subject is sitting, or crawling, on. When things do line up enabling the auto focus and image stabilization to do their thing, the effort is worth it. I can't say that I have had more fun with my camera than when using this lens.
I bought this as an upgrade to the non-D-improved original 1990s FA 100/2.8 Macro. It is. It's 100% definitely sharper than the FA lens. The hilariously decreased weight and size plus moisture and dust resistance was kind of a no-brainer for my most-common photog needs (I want a weather-resist kit that covers ~24mm to ~100 weather sealed plus macro). The HD-D FA blows me away on optical performance. Most of my macro work is available-light right now, and with the metering of both the K-1 II and K-3 III, this lens delivers really sharp results that are pretty free of flare/bloom, with almost no significant purple fringing or troublesome bokeh aberrations. Light blooming off in-focus highlights is really well controlled, too. Optically, this lens is absolutely an ... MoreI bought this as an upgrade to the non-D-improved original 1990s FA 100/2.8 Macro. Light blooming off in-focus highlights is really well controlled, too. Optically, this lens is absolutely an upgrade if you're still on the old FA lens.Mechanically, I do think I miss the on-lens switch for the focus limiter. I understand it's gone for the AW designation, so I'm okay living with that. I wish Pentax would release a firmware for the K-3 III that allows you to assign the limiter to the S.Fn button/dial. The manual focus action is satisfying, and I don't miss the focus clamp. The biggest problem with the construction is that the manual focus action is a little crunchy until you've run the AF through the full range two or maybe three times in a session. Once you've done that, totally smooth, totally fine. Without it, I find a couple of spots through the manual focus range that are a little chunky. I don't know if this is general to the lens or specific to my copy, but because it's so easy to overcome, I'm not super worried about it in the long run.Overall: while I can't say this is a meaningful upgrade from the D-FA 100, or the D-FA 100 WR, this is definitely a welcome swap in the bag for the original FA 100 2.8. Alongside my ancient M 50/4 1:2 macro and the A* 200/4 macro, this is a great addition to my close-focus capabilities. Somday I'll toss a 35/2.8 in here, too, for a full selection of close-focus whatnot!
This lens simply produces sharper images than any other lens I've used at this price range. It also focuses very quickly, and has the feature common to Pentax lenses where you can manually change focus even when the camera is set to AF. The lens is very light too, and the weather resistance is a big plus. There are just two small problems. First, there is some purple fringing at or below f/4.5 on very high contrast shots, e.g. a bird against the sky. This disappears above f/4.5, and is very hard to notice when the background is not the sky or some other bright light source. For instance, the CA is just barely visible in bright daylight f/2.8 shots of pigeons with black and white feathers -- at the border between black and white feathers is the smallest bit of purple ... MoreThis lens simply produces sharper images than any other lens I've used at this price range. The other issue, even more minor, is that the included lens hood doesn't have a slot to control a polarizing filter. The hood is solid all the way around so you can't use it with a polarizing filter. Overall though, fantastic lens.
I am just starting out in macro photography and have only taken what I consider to be test shots. I love the look it provides with one exception. The bokeh seems jittery if there is any "busyness" in the background; you can see that in the sample images provided with these reviews. On the other hand, I got much better results in an aquarium than I saw in the reviews here. If the upload works from my tablet, you'll find a hand-held focus stack of miniature anemones.
What can I say about a legendary lens that is as sharp, clean, and easy to handle as Ive ever used? Bravo for the Pentax D FA Macro 100mm f/2.8! This lens will surprise the seasoned pro and mesmerize the beginner with clear, crisp, 3D shots and a beautiful bokeh that will make you want to keep shooting even after dark. I think I hit a home run buying this lens!
First let me say this is my first macro lens & I purchased it so that I could take macro shots. I've been using this lens regularly for a little over a month & I love it. The lens is weather sealed, it's at 2.8 wide open, you can use it as a medium telephoto-you get a lot out of this lens. The only downside to this lens is it's auto-focus. I won't lie, it leaves a lot to be desired when shooting macro but most of the time I found myself using focusing manually for this purpose anyway. The throw on the lens is pretty long & the lens doesn't have a focus limiter so it will probably hunt through its entire range before focusing on the subject. I noticed that this happened mostly when using live view for me although it did happen when using the view finder. When using this lens for regular shots I didn't experience this issue since most subjects were farther away.I don't think that the auto-focus is enough reason to knock the lens down more than one star for three key reasons:1-Pentax auto-focus as whole isn't as speedy as other companies. Pentax works for me so I accept this. I'm not shooting sports or other situations that require fast auto-focus.2-I bought this lens primarily for macro shots-I'll be focusing manually & using a tripod most of the time anyway.3-When I look at the value offered by this product & compare to other options in the current price range (as of this posting it is below $$) I feel that the auto-focus issue is NEGLIGIBLE.
