I had the first generation for 10+ years and loved it. Unfortunately the part that rakes the litter some of them eroded. I'm thinking due to the urine. So it was time for a new one. I saw the second generation only with the top entry and little holes to air it out from the top. My cat did not like the hoody on the first generation. I'm thinking it was too enclosed, kept it dark inside since the hoody was purple and kept the smell inside. I decided to take a chance with the second generation. The good news is that my cat took to it without a problem. I can tell you that second generation has so many pros and no cons. It scoops for you... that is what it is made to do, and it does that well. Odor is nonexistent for about 2 weeks, and minimal for about another week. The crystals DO NOT stay in the box !!! I repeat, the crystals DO NOT stay in the box - this is my chief complaint if you couldn't tell, and an outright misrepresentation on the company's part. It was very difficult to get my Bleu to use it, at first. As suggested in the manual, I set it up beside her existing covered box. She was curious; sitting in front of it and looking inside, but would not go in. I tried everything imaginable to no avail. My cat has used the box about 45 times now, she demanded that i change the litter at about 35 and its working for me great. It dosent have any smell good or bad not even when it got used enough that my cat didnt want to use it any more, and my cat and i live in the same room i sleep 5 foot away from her litter box. Not only does it move the solid waste out of the way it also sifts the liquid waste so that its not so concentrated. Any time i lift up the electronics i clean off the sensors and the box has only told me that the sensors were not reading once. There is not much 'storage' for the solid waste so with one cat i find myself lifting it up maybe 2 times a week to scoop the solids out and sifting any wet looking litter around. Finally the litter and disposable tray idea is nice and handy especially to just get delivered however its very expensive at least up front. Depending on how long your cat is willing to use the litter and if you buy more in bulk or not might wind up causing the price to even out especually if you buy more expensive litter already.

I now own three of these, with 3 cats. I bought my third one from here on petco. Not given to me as a promotion, nor is this some fake review paid for by some company. To the people complaining about the rake issues, litter smelling and crystals not lasting so long, and the box smelling in general.. by theory you’re supposed to have a litter box per cat plus an extra. If you have a bunch of cats sharing one box and going in after another, poop and litter will accumulate in one spot. That’s half the reason the rake stops half way or some cat playing with the rake as it moves. That happens more if you don’t have a hood. That’s half the reason the rake stops half way or some cat playing with the rake as it moves. That happens more if you don’t have a hood. The litter does last 2 weeks with 3 cats… only because I have THREE scoop free boxes with the health counter. The living room and bedroom needs a change every 3 weeks… again 3 cats and 3 of the same box. The basement gets changed the most, every 2 weeks. You can’t have a bunch of cats to make a tray last as advertised and then only buy one of these expecting it to last long. Follow the same procedure of having one box per cat at the minimum. Every vet will tell you this. Cost wise if you have 1 box per cat plus an extra, the crystal litter should last almost as long as advertised. These are phenomenal and I feel I’ve been living under a rock. Yes the litter tracks a bit but all liter does to some degree. This tracks a lot less then clay litter. I’m a lazy person and these things are a god send. Take a plastic spoon and stir the litter around in each box once per day, including the litter behind the rake.
I’ve been using this for 8 months now, and it’s fantastic! The cats are very happy to use it. It took them all of one day to get used to it, and they found the rake fascinating. I don’t know why they say not to use automatic mode until kittens are six months old - my 3-month-olds took to it immediately, and still love it! No accidents! The only odor is right after one of them has pooped, and even that’s not too bad because of the hood. Once it’s raked, no more odor - and believe me, I’d notice - the box is in the bathroom attached to my bedroom! (In fact, the way I tell if the tray needs changing is when there’s still odor after raking. I give it a manual rake and if the odor’s still there, it’s time for a new tray.) (In fact, the way I tell if the tray needs changing is when there’s still odor after raking. I give it a manual rake and if the odor’s still there, it’s time for a new tray.) I do prefer the Lavender litter - it has much less of a perfumed smell than the Original Blue litter (I’m very sensitive to smells) and it seems to control the odors just as well. I have two cats, and the trays last a full two weeks. They are very sturdy and don’t leak. I hate scooping, mainly because I have to bend over, and the odor is strong. The only difficulty with this system is that the tray is somwehat heavy to pick up, cover, and dispose of. However, that’s still better than emptying an entire cat box into a trash bag and carrying the bag to the trash can once a week - and the trays last longer. It definitely beats trying to lift a 25-lb jug (or even a 15-lb box) of cat litter to fill a newly-cleaned box, and I don’t have to clean a box! I’m completely sold on this box, and definitely recommend it!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ FIVE STARS! We are very happy with Our cat’s new PetSafe Trouble & scoop free litter box! PetSafe’s trouble-free litter box really works as described!!! I Purchased the PetSafe scoop-free self-cleaning litter box to get rid of all the dust from the, “dust free litter”, from our old box. Sarcasm intended! We have one cat and his first tray lasted him over three weeks. It required very little to no maintenance. On a couple of occasions, we had to push the button to run the rake again. Other than that, there was nothing else to do except maybe straighten the litter when he got to frisky in the box, and on one occasion, wipe with a damp sponge any poop residue on the side of the box. I really like being able to keep track of how much he uses the box. So, the counter is a great tool. Be careful not to dig up or flip the crystal litter though because the urine is soaked into the crystals on the bottom of the tray. I also waited a couple of weeks before ordering replacement trays so that I would learn if he liked it and used it first. I am considering getting the cover for it too now because some granules do escape when he digs the box up like a maniac. I will add that he took right to his new box, using it immediately. It was funny to watch him run up to his litter box and stare at it while the rake did it work. Lol I do not recommend a phasing in from the old box. Why not? Because that gives the cat the option to reject the new box by choosing the old box over the new one. I recommend replacing the old box with the new box in the exact same spot. Also, note: DO NOT keep the new box in a damp environment like a laundry room or bathroom because the moisture ruins the litter and it will clump and cause the rake to not work properly or effectively. I read many reviews before purchasing and that is the biggest mistake people make, even with placement advice from the manufacturer. We had our old box in the master bathroom and after he used his new PetSafe box for three consecutive days, I relocated it to a different place, dry and completely away from all moisture and humidity. I made sure he used it for at least three days first though. It has been smooth sailing ever since. Or should I say, no scooping, smelling, or dusting! This pet safe litter box is absolutely worth every penny! We all love it! I highly recommend this box!
This is a genuine review, not someone paid by Walmart or petsafe. This was not a promotion and purchased with my own money. Ok onto the review of this product. Me and my bf have 3 cats, and scooping is something I’ve always been terrible with. Shame on me, I know I’m lazy. That’s why I finally bought this and a second one. Cats wouldn’t use it at first. I put it in the bedroom rather then the basement and closed the door with the cats with us at night. I strongly recommend putting a bag and a half of litter, one bag isn’t enough if your cats are used to digging around. That helped big time. The censors won’t be covered or contaminated. You can get the bags separately without the trays which saves you money. Some say you can use the FreshStep Crystals. I will say the ... I will say the freshStep crystals are more rough and hard, so I can’t imagine it feeling pleasant for the cats on their paws. For humane reasons I’ll stick to the Scoopfree brand. Wow this works great. No smell coming from it. I recommend you stir the litter once a day, litter will last longer. I think from my experience it’s best to put this box where their original box was. Put it next to the old box and let it get dirty. With 3 cats the tray lasts 10-12 days. I guess it depends on your cats. Then again I have two of these and 1 traditional box to help them transition. The more of these you have, the longer they will last.
I bought my first PetSafe ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box in approximately 2003 when I rescued my kitty. It worked great and I only changed it out every 3 weeks. I have one cat who's a healthy weight for her size but a bit on the larger side (10.5 pounds). She can be a little messy with the litter but nothing crazy just have to vaccum occasionally. thought this might be a good investment but after one month I wish I had kept the box to try and return it. The first thing I noticed was it was the smallest litter box I had ever bought. The disposable trays are extremely shallow with hardly more than an inch or 2 of depth and very little litter. I got the covered one knowing she has a tendency to kick litter but my cat barely has space to move around in the box so she still manages to kick out lots of litter and even poop. Poop gets stuck on the rake and urine gets caked to the sides so you'll have to clean it anyway and if ... If you have a small very clean cat this might work for you but if your cat is average like mine save your money
I wish we could have liked this. It seemed great when we saw at a friend’s parent’s house for their cat. I purchased for our two 10-wk old kittens. They had no issue using it and were not scared. But this litter box STINKS! No ability to hide the poo smell when it rakes it under a cardboard flap to just sit there until you remove it. The urine goes directly into the recommended crystals and stinks there until you change the entire expensive litter pan. The litter itself has no qualities to contain smells. We tried under filling this, thinking maybe it would help to have less litter being trapped in the “pocket” and therefore the poop could be better contained under the flap. Did not help. We tried under filling this, thinking maybe it would help to have less litter being trapped in the “pocket” and therefore the poop could be better contained under the flap. Did not help. We also tried over filling, for the same reason but wanting to see if the poop would then get “buried” under the flap. Also nope. While this box technically allows you to stop fishing with the scoop, you must still collect the waste out from under the flap; it doesn’t compact anything for you. We also were disappointed that the rake gets poo on it, and can gather/trap poop behind it, meaning it can’t take those pieces into the pocket area, and you just scoop those yourself. The smell forced us to clean this 2x a day — didn’t save us any time at all. Just cost way more for all of the materials. A friend watched my cats for 3wks and she used this litter box also to no good avail with such atrocious smell. Thankfully, Target honored a return after I disinfected and cleaned. I’ve switched now to Feline Pine litter and a simple litter box. I scoop and clean less and I’m not bitten by the air’s foul smell.
