Oups! Petzl did it again! After the 1991 GriGri revolution, here is the 2024 Neox, another game changer. The big change here is not on the aspect of safety, but on the ease and speed of giving slack when you belay a rock climber on lead combined with a quick locking action when used properly. Key word here are: "used properly." Unlike a GriGri, it won't lock by itself. Not for beginners. But perfect for experts. You will love it!

The Neox is a phenomenal upgrade from the Grigri for lead belaying. The feeding is so smooth that you'd have to fight giving slack when the climber is clipping. Falls catch the exact same as the Grigri. I was worried that the lowering process would be too sensitive and I was pleasantly surprised with the friction. That being said, if you have a heavier climber, you will have to watch your lower a bit more than the grigri, but the difference wasn't huge like a Revo. Probably the one thing to take into consideration for buying this is that this device is really specialized for lead belaying on, generally, single pitches. My Grigri or Pinch is still preferred for a crew that might TR.

if you are an experienced Belayer who's supporting a Sport Lead Climber clipping bolts, then this new device may be the bomb-diggity for you, I've watxched the videos and you can pay out slack to the clipper MUCH FASTER with this device. However, you'd better keep your hand on the brake rope, because the "catch" needs to be more forceful for the wheel to engage the rope. You can see that in the demo videos. If you are in the market for a new device, and oyu know what you are doing, then great = go fo it. But if you are a typical climber or Belayer, you might want to stick with the GriGri 3; and if you are new to Belaying, you might even want to considder the GriGri+ model.

It does feed smoother if you do not hold the device while you belay. So you hold onto the break strand with hand and the climbers end with the other. But if you like to hold the device with your thumb and index finger and clasp the break strand with middle, ring and pinky finger than purchasing the neox does not make any sense. With this form of belay it does not feet any smoother. And taking up slack is somehow more difficult than with the grigri. And it’s heaver. And it’s not great for multipitch. One you can’t belay off of the anchor and with the added chores of multi-pitching…lets just say i like having the extra sense of security of the grigri.
I highly recommend the Neox for belaying a lead climber. It’s much easier to feed rope with on lead than a GriGri. It catches falls smoothly, works fine on top-rope, and is easy to lower with.
Perfect Lead Belay Device. Took a couple of belays to slightly adjust from a regular Grigri to the Neox. I really like this for lead belaying but prefer the regular Grigri for top-rope belaying and multi-pitches (due to weight).
I've been testing this device for 8 months and have had an excellent experience with it in every application. It simply does everything better. Lead belays don't require any special technique to pay out slack quickly, no more short ropes, taking in slack for TR or belaying a second is effortless. The Grigri does lock up a little easier/faster, so I still use it for certain applications, but I always reach for the Neox now when I go climbing, and my partners prefer it too.
Purchased as an upgrade for lead belay verses the Grigri. Love the smoothness of feeding. The belay style mimics the old tube style belay devices so its a good transition for those who have been hesitant of the grigri or other assisted braking devices. Locks well when needed and feeds as wanted.
I LOVE this device. I cannot even explain to you how much of an improvement this device is for lead belaying over the traditional GriGri. I am a smaller woman and often am belaying someone over my height/weight, and the ability to feed without short roping is KEY. The device still catches like a beast AND you still have the control over lowering. If you mostly lead climb/belay this device is a MUST.
This device is sooooo sick. Lead belaying with the neox is SMOOTH AS BUTTER. It leaves virtually no chance of short roping your climber and still provides a quick catch when they whip. 10/10, 5 stars, Grade A+.. its seriously the best!
