We wanted to love this headlamp. My wife and I bought two. It's very bright, which is useful for fat biking or skijoring with a dog in the Alaskan dark. After two years, one of the headlamps abruptly quit working for no reason we could discern. For a headlamp that expensive, we expected better.Pros: It's very bright for the size. It has adjustable brightness. Bright enough for biking.Cons: Rechargeable battery (not AAA's) means you will need to bring a battery bank and charging cord along on multi-night trips. No red light- difficult in a shared tent or public use cabin. Reliability is not good.

Amazing headlamp, in first I was a bit sceptical of the reactive lighting tech, but I gave it a go anyway, because you can turn it of as well. The reactive lighting is fantastic, works very well, it reacts very fast to the illumination changes around you, seamless. Im using the lowest reactive light setting for night hikes on the trails that I already know well, and for unknown trails Im using mid setting. I didnt had a situation where I would use max setting, its just to bright for me, but good that is there. Very light and comfortable headlamp as well, battery life so far very good, since I use it on the min setting. Only downside, when you are on the min setting, you have to press 3 times to turn it off. The Swift is great for trails, especially if you're coming down in the dark, but just don't expect the battery to last for a long camping trip.1. Light: the swift has 2 options - a wide dispersal lighting and narrow focused beam all with 2 intensity options. I find that the options are quite nice and relatively easy to switch between. So if you need to see the whole trail easy, if you only want to see what's in your backpack you can also manage that. The negative is that there's no red light( aka woke up in the night and have to answer nature's call) option. I did not notice much from the reactive lighting, but I also tended to bring out the lights when it's too dark to see out of habit.2. Band: the Swift has a pretty comfy band, with easily adjustable loops, and the slight cushion behind the lamp itself is nice. I found the double adjustments in the back easy enough with gloves on, but didn't really try to adjust with the band on my head.3. Tactile: I'd say the Swift is pretty easy to fumble the lights on/off with gloves on. The option to lock the light on/off function is nice, but difficult to maneuver with gloves on.4. Battery life/indicator. The swift has a very easy to read battery indicator. Which is quite helpful since the battery life is not that long. Like I said, it will last at least 8 hours to get you off a mountain. But if you're planning to take it along for a long camping trip without ability to recharge it, you might have to plan to use it sparingly. It's nice that the swift is rechargeable, but likely also why the battery doesn't last too long. Older non-rechargeable headlamps use the usual AAA and thus last quite a bit longer and much easier to 'recharge' if you just bring some spares.

I've used this headlamp for a couple of years. It works fine for weekly ~1 hour night trail runs, but I noticed I have to fully recharge it before runs even if I only use it 1 hour a week. I wore it for a 6 hour (dry) night run and it worked fine (6 hours got it down to 1 bar of charge so would have needed to recharge if going longer). However, despite being fully charged pre-run, during an ultra it quit working after 3 hours (except for the dimmest setting which was not adequate for running) of wearing it in pretty heavy rain (1 hour not turned on, 2 hours turned on). It does not accept regular AA or AAA batteries. I would recommend this for short dry night runs but not ultras where you are running through the night if there is any chance of rain. The Petzl Swift RL headlamp, on paper, sounds like a great technical piece of lighting for the active user, and for the most part it hits the spot. It has a comfortable, adjustable headband that holds the light securely. Much more so than previous headlamps I’ve used (albeit those were much simpler). The band allows for quick adjustability, and so quick fixes in use are easy. It has a rechargeable battery that can run for many hours (advertised as much as 100 hours in low beam). And at its brightest, can put out up to 900 lumens of illumination. Talk about bright! I haven’t needed to use that level of brightness much, but nice to know it’s there. Of course, using it at that brightness will quickly diminish your battery life, so use that mode sparingly. Of course, using it at that brightness will quickly diminish your battery life, so use that mode sparingly. The beam has great projection and lights up a good distance in front of you, as well. This headlamp also has a reactive lighting system that adjusts its brightness based on the ambient brightness to maximize battery life. Sounds like a cool trick, right? Couldn’t really tell, but the light appeared to stay consistent across conditions, so I’m guessing it worked. I didn’t notice any sudden jumps between light levels. As far as battery life goes, it seemed to have about what it said—I’ve used it pretty much in the medium settings and gotten about four hours of runtime from it (I believe Petzl’s claiming 5 hours). I’ll need more opportunities to fully test it out to see if it’ll get what they’re saying. Unfortunately, the battery indicator on mine hasn’t reflected battery health correctly—it’s been all five bars or none, so I’ve not been able to know when it’s going to go out. Overall, I think it’s a solid headlamp, especially if you’re looking for one that’ll stay put in use, is comfortable, has bright, adjustable lighting, and is rechargeable.
All of Petzl’s prior top end front battery headlights have been stellar, I’ve had many and love this brands ergonomics and reliability.I buy one every time they change and still have and use the two prior iterations of this lamp. This one took a few steps back.Pro: Yes very bright, balanced and comfortable. Reactive lighting is great.Con: no red light, seriously? That was the stupidest omission, shame. Having to toggle through all light levels to turn off. Lame. You get used to it, but having to do three clicks to turn off on a light of this brightness level often leads to you ending on the highest setting and blinding yourself before having to toggle back through to turn off.Otherwise a great lamp.
The only drawback of this product should be the price. Unfortunately, that is not the case. It's impressively bright and a great proof of concept for the reactive lighting. The entire point of the reactive lighting is that you will not blind yourself while using this lamp, but you will blind others. This headlamp is unusable in a group. It would be perfect with a red light setting, but, without that, it's unusable in my application. I hope Petzl takes the feedback and flushes this product out a little bit. A mode memory option would be fantastic! For now, I'll stick with one of the Black Diamond offerings and use a high powered flashlight when I need a long distance spotlight.
I’ve bought MANY of these headlamps over the years. MANY. I’ve tried endless other brands and always go back to these. I use them daily (or nightly) and depend on them. I’m a distance trail and ultra distance trail runner and run at night and am out tor a minimum of 4-6 hrs every night. I live at 11,000’ so that’s where all my runs start. I also head up, (to ~14,000’) so am not close to anyone and run year round. I must have 100% full faith and trust in my gear. It’s too dangerous if anything fails. I used to LOVE these lights. No longer…I love how there are so many settings, how I can set it to reactive or static. That’s important for me. The settings I use are different depending if I’m running dirt (so many rocks and roots and…) vs snow. These once were the best. And I’ve tried them all. But the last 4-6 lamps I’ve gotten have been worthless. None will hold a charge. It shows green but I still may only 15 mins. I never know if I’ll get 6 hours out of it or 10 minutes (literally). I can’t risk it. I wear it while cutting the dogs’ nails which may take 5-10 mins. IT WON’T LAST EVEN THAT LONG!!I don’t know what’s going on or why the quality has decreased so much. Sadly, these are far too expensive to buy just to try and hope. I’ll have to go to another brand.
After using the Petzl Swift RL Headlamp for a few weeks, I have to say that I am not very impressed with this product. Although it is advertised as a high-performance headlamp, I found it to be quite underwhelming in terms of its brightness and overall functionality. One of the main issues I had with this headlamp is that it has a very limited battery life. Despite being marketed as having a "rechargeable" battery, I found that it needed to be charged very frequently, which was quite inconvenient, especially when I was using it in remote areas. The battery had absolutely horrible performance in “cold” weather. By “cold”, I mean Seattle cold, which is rarely below freezing. Basically anything below 45 degrees results in little to no battery life. I paid full price as I noticed FNT trail runners were using this for their multiple day and night pursuits. Fully charged I'd leave in car for two days and it'd be almost dead for no reason. Also the on-off lock is not secure-- several times I'd find my light on after I locked it to put in pack or pocket. My Actics with no locks were far less likely to accidentally turn on although they did once in awhile. I also only had the choice of a black and white unit which would get dirty very quickly. I switched back to Petzl from Black Diamonds due to the later failing after 2 or 3 years -- planned obsolescence I think--but I'd doubt this one would last a year.Great concept and incredible powerful light I am still tempted to try again next time with a recommended case that Petzl supplies. But more likely try another high intensity non name brand light for less money. The active adjustment light worked well and even low setting was enough most the time whereas my Actics require middle setting to be good enough. If you get one be conscious it's fragile headband wears quickly. My first and only return to REI so I didn't do it precipitously.
