I noticed that my first few cups of coffee out of the machine were mediocre so it does take some time to get the machine dialed in. There is also regular maintenance that is required on the machine which allows you to keep the machine running optimally for years to come.As long as you do the suggested maintenance on the machine you can ensure barista quality drinks at home for years to come

A bunch of indicators pops up from time to time to remind me of when some cleaning needs to be done, or when the water level drops a bit. Even though I typically prefer more customization, I also liked the simple interface this machine has. Apart from the fully “automatic” nature of the machine, it boasts a grinder that is surprisingly quiet (even the milk frother seemed loud compared to it).Coffee qualityNow the meat of the matter. Since there’s only a few parameters that can be tweaked (basically the grind setting and the “aroma” strength), making less thinking involved in the coffee making process, I’ve found some weird results when I changed my beans. It seems the system needs some calibration/optimization before a consistent brew is delivered. Especially in the beginning the espresso was very watery and light, almost without any body. After about 3-4 days, it became a bit more enjoyable. However, I always found the machine struggling with lighter roast, as evidenced when I was cleaning out the used coffee pucks - the medium and dark roast beans had a more cleaner, well rounded solid pucks, while the lighter roast ones produced mostly broken soft pucks (making things a little messy). Just straight up espresso (or americano) was always lacked some taste that I always get from my other espresso machines. The regular black “coffee” mode produced something that felt more like watered down espresso (not americano), rather than what I expected to be closer to drip coffee. The milk based beverages (cappuccino and latte macchiato) were better, as I felt like the LatteGo system consistently produced good frothed milk and foam, and since it comes with a press of a button, is immensely convenient. The hot water is very useful when I was looking for a quick way to make tea. I, however, did not use the cold coffee mode much as I’m not a fan of that in general.Maintenance & CleaningAny good coffee machine will bring with it it’s array of maintenance procedures, and being an automated machine makes the list even longer. Apart from the regular drip tray, milk frother, and the water reservoir, there are, in addition, the brew group which needs to be regularly cleaned, and sometimes lubricated. Most of the items are machine washable, and the user guide has a chart for all the cleaning rituals. I wish the cleaning was more “automatic” as well since the list is not small, however nothing is very difficult to wash/clean.ConclusionIn summary, the Philips 3300 is a good package to have for people who want a decent espresso drink without spending time in doing all the good grinding/dosing/tamping etc. by hand on a daily basis. It does not make the best espresso out there, not has the largest array of drinks available. Custom recipes are not available as well. However the ease with how it gets it done is just amazing. For the price I believe it’s worth looking into.

It handles grinding, tamping, brewing, frothing and ground disposal. Just tell it to make something and it literally does everything for you. I had been using a semi automatic machine that I loved but frothing milk manually tough easy, involves some skill and time that is eliminated with this device.It will grind hole coffee beans which is the way I imagine anyone would want to use it but you can also bypass this and add ground coffee if you choose. Convenient if you want to try something different that you grind yourself or if, in an emergency that is all you have on hand it is easy to just open the hatch on the top and put the pre-gound coffee in. I also appreciate that the water reservoir is on the side and easy to see to stay ahead of filling.Another nice touch is a drain pan that is large and includes the spent grounds container which holds several cycles of coffee making. When you pull it out to empty, there is a very useful spout at the back making pouring waste easy and neat. Except for one part all are dishwasher safe.When starting up it goes through some soft of process to get ready. Some water may be dispensed during this as well as during shutdown, so be careful not to place your cup under the spout until it is ready to go. After that it is really just a matter of adding milk, if desired, to the tank and pressing a couple of buttons.The only negative thing I can think of with this is I cannot figure out how to easily get only frothed milk. It is rare that I need this but when I make hot chocolate (which uses another specialized machine) it is nice to top with some frothy dairy goodness.If you like coffee beverages but don't want to fiddle around with all the steps, this is the machine for you. I am truly amazed at how nicely it works and the quality of Java that emerges from within.

To operate this automatic machine, we will employ the index finger of my daughter to press the start button, who has, in the past, been a barista in a popular coffee chain. Then, we drink.This is a handsome machine that is relatively expensive, reasonably compact in size and graced with functionality. The controls on this device are mostly intuitive, easy to operate and comprehensive. Setup is relatively easy, even more so if you grew up putting together small plastic blocks or lingonberry-fueled furniture, as Philips employs the open-to-interpretation drawings methodology for instructions that allow earthlings of any language to setup and operate the machine. Any of those earthlings will have to go online to search for an actual written manual to read in their language. Pity the fool that has no internet connectivity, for they shall not make coffee easily. Also note that as you extract the machine from its cardboard prison, note that they’ve supplied a convenient sling of plastic with hand holes near the ends that swaths the lower body and allows easy and safe liftoff out of the nested packaging material.After removing the various stickers and tape, it is advisable to wash any of the removable surfaces that are involved in the coffee-making process. As this model also includes a replaceable AquaClean water filter, you are supposed to shake it for 5 seconds, soak it in an external water bath for 30 seconds (to fill it with water) and install it into the water tank of the coffee maker to allow it to filter the water for improved taste and reduced need for future mineral deposit removal. In addition, Philips has also supplied a small test strip to determine your water’s relative hardness, with results derived by exposing the test strip to the water to be used for a period of one second and then waiting for one minute to determine what the hardness level is. Next, you inform the machine what that level is per the instructions and then you can get on with your new coffee-making life.Maintenance-wise, the manufacturer claims that the ceramic bean-grinding blades are long-lasting and that the cleaning cycle for removing mineral deposits isn’t required to be used until after approximately 5,000 cups have been brewed. Really? I find this hard to believe even if using the in-line filter.The “manual” also seems to indicate a rather rigorous cleaning regimen of rinsing the removable grinding mechanism, accessible from a door behind the water reservoir and all the removable water/coffee contacting parts at least once a week. Obviously, the milk reservoir requires cleaning after each session of use if not storing it in the fridge for the next use. Once every two months, there is a supplied tube of some form of lubrication that is required to be used on the grinding mechanism. So, all things considered, this device requires some maintenance, although perhaps not as much as some more professional models that see higher use, although certainly much more than your typical K-Cup plastic-waste-creator.There is a degree of noise creation with this model that strikes a compromise from the wake-the-household noise levels of professional machines compared to the stealth of a French press. This model rumbles in somewhere between the two, with the grinding portion comparable to the water pump for being the noisiest parts of the cycle.Some of the other pluses on this machine are the six, preset brew choices that allow wanna-be-baristas to handle all the timing and judgement demands that come with mastering the preparatory art of fancy coffee making. While the hot water button is nothing to write home about, some of the other settings do require a bit of getting used to in selecting the correct size container for the various froth and liquid combinations. Also, when selecting the X2 derivative of some of the presets, note that it goes through the complete cycle two times with a fresh coffee grind for each cycle. Another handy feature is the resumption of an ongoing operation after the need for and then a refill of water.Minuses include those same six button-selected brew choices that would appear to be displayed on a programmable lcd screen, but in fact, are just capacitive-touch switches with bright LED lights to indicate positions/settings. Depending on ambient lighting, this sometimes requires the aid of a phone light to illuminate the front of the panel, as the glare from the LEDs overpower the printed graphics in lower light conditions to make reading the front panel’s markings difficult. Other issues include the rigorous cleaning requirements, the lack of a rapid bean replacement (RBR) method to exchange one type of bean for another and an available app that only allows access to a manual and some recipes in exchange for your personal information and God knows what else. There is one saving grace for RBR versatility that involves a chute located at the top of the machine that allows pre-ground coffee to bypass the grinder (with help from a front panel button) for an alternative to whatever is located in the bean hopper, whose contents, when loaded, are somewhat difficult to remove.So, are you a Jacomo or a Jack? Does coffee connoisseur describe your inclination towards the offspring of the roasted brown beans? From my point of view as someone who enjoys coffee, but is not crazy about spending a fortune for a machine that may or may not be relegated to storage in a few months, this machine is at the top of both my budget and capabilities. I like it, but of course wish there were a few changes. I would recommend it to friends if they were in the market for a machine in this price range, but with the caveat that I have had no other brand/model experience with similar priced machines to compare it to. However, there is no doubt that this “automatic” espresso machine is way easier to operate than a manual one with results satisfyingly delicious.There is a charming expression used in the auto world of something called a “daily driver”. This coffee maker may not be a practical “daily driver” for everyone, due mainly to its cost and upkeep/cleaning requirements, but for a personal splurge, or when entertaining, it may well be worth the cost and extra cleaning required. Maybe it’s also worth holding onto whatever coffee maker you currently have and think about this one as more appropriate for use on those special occasions when you don’t mind putting in a little extra effort into using and cleaning your “fully automatic” espresso machine for a taste treat. Everyone in our household thoroughly enjoyed the flavor of the coffees made with this machine and despite what may seem like a limited number of presets, there is a wide assortment of variations possible. We tried many different beans and all of them were handled with aplomb by this machine. Recommended.

The LatteGo milk system has been an excellent way to get frothing in full effect for the various drinks I've made. The foam is very thick and it performs very well with almond milk and dairy milk from what I have used. The ceramic grinders located within the machine work very well and allow for 12 variations of grinding for fine to coarse grinding preference. The LatteGo is also a greatly appreciated attachment due to its simple cleaning system since it consists of only 2 parts that can be dishwasher safe. Our household makes multiple cups of coffee throughout the day and simply requires us to fill water, empty out the used coffee grounds, and clean out the drip tray.Overall I am liking the machine and the quality of the coffee is very nice and strong. If I'm spending $5-$7 per day at the popular coffee shop for a latte macchiato per person that adds up very fast for our household. The only one negative thing I can say about this is that this is labeled as SilentBrew Technology, but it still makes a decent amount of noise between the coffee bean grinding, hot water pump activating, and the milk frother. It's not deafeningly loud, but surely not silent. A high quality coffee machine like this can save me money in the long run and allow for excellent coffee drinks right at home without being rushed or stuck in lines. The machine looks beautiful and classy as well when sitting on the kitchen counter in our home. We have entertained family and friends on a few evenings and made coffee drinks that impressed our guests and everyone was pleased with the quality and simplicity of the coffee. It should be emptied periodically so it doesn't get completely filled. The water tank should also be refilled at the same time if needed. The water tank contains an Aqua Clean filter that removes limescale deposits and reduces the need for descaling. The machine will indicate when a new filter is needed. Simply remove the filter from the water tank and insert a new one when needed.The Philips 3300 Fully Automatic Espresso Machine with Frother has become my new go-to device for morning coffee, espresso and lattes. My wife loves it for its iced coffee abilities and macciatos. It now proudly awaits us on our kitchen counter and fits nicely under our cabinets.Without hesitation, I highly recommend the Philips 3300 Espresso machine to you!
