It took me a while to find some uses for my air fryer. They are ok for crumbed food if that's your thing. But for reheating pies and sausage rolls, cooking baked potatoes, crisping bread rolls, cooking dinner rolls, and crisping Turkish bread it is superb. It saves me having to light the kitchen oven and saves heaps in gas. I'm sure I'll find more uses as time goes by, but as it is, I use it nearly every day. Definitely worth the money.

One small nit-pick is that I wished the power cable was a little longer but not a deal-breaker. What surprised me most about this product is just how light and portable this air fryer is, it was by far much lighter than it appeared with its compact plastic exterior build (and non-stick metal tray/grill construction). In terms of size, given just how compact the product is it fits in nicely in the cupboard with ease considering this is the smaller air fryer in the range. Cooking – In terms of operating the product, it works as intended – for most meals. For the positives, I really appreciated the quick warm-up of the product. Cooking on the other hand was surprisingly quicker than my previous air fryer. While other participants in my review group were given the XXL version, it was quite difficult to cook larger cuts of meats due to the smaller tray size of my review unit. Overall, I was quite impressed by the quicker cooking times and the results of most meals, but felt the recommended cooking times and temperature guide should be reviewed as this wasn’t reflected with some of the meals I’ve cooked with this product. If there were some negatives, it would be that the timer cannot be stopped or wound-back and the lack of a window to check on the cooking process. Despite the capability of baking cakes, I felt the small tray size wasn’t sufficient and none of my cooking trays fit inside the air fryer. Cleaning – Cleaning this product was a lot easier than my previous glass-based air fryer. For manual/hand-washing, the non-stick surfaces of the bottom tray and sides of the attachment easily clean without issue with regular detergent and a non-abrasive wipe. The metallic mesh part of the attachment doe’s require a little effort (sometimes a pre-soak in detergent prior to cleaning) with either a brush or scrub sponge and most food remnants will eventually come off. Cleaning the exterior of the product is easy, only requiring a very gentle wipe-down to restore the stylish glossy appeal of the fryer. Operation - I felt the controls were adequate despite the basic appearance (compared to the XXL version with the digital dials and display). The sound omitted from the air fryer is acceptable; it’s in no way a silent machine or the noisiest either. The vents were also adequate during the cooking process but expect most food smells to escape into the room or area. Final Thoughts – Overall, the Philips Air Fryer definitely surprised me; the sleek and sophisticated design as well as the glossy black finish is definitely a crowd pleaser. The quick start-up and efficient operation of this product was probably the biggest benefit, the quality of most food cooked with this air fryer was definitely the biggest surprise with moist and tasty meats to crispy and flavoursome finger foods that didn’t require much cooking time at all. The only negatives I could find with this product so far are: the small tray size limiting cooking options, some inconsistent cooking times and temperature settings on the paper quick guide, the lack of a window or screen to check the cooking process to the fixed timer that can’t be reset or stopped if you make a mistake. This is a product best suited for those that want to cook a quick meal without the fuss, the HD9218 model in particular is ideal for small families especially during the colder months when cooking outside isn’t an option.

When I’m feeling like a lighter meal, I can pop in some vegetables and fish with just a little seasoning and no oils at all- the finished product is still scrumptious, cooked evenly, and without the dryness you’d get in a standard oven. Clean up is a real breeze. The basket wipes up nicely (although I would recommend a standard sponge rather than a scourer, as the fibres can get caught), and the non-stick pan rinses off easily. I turn to the Philips Airfryer practically every evening- be it the main star of my recipe that night, or a quick way to make sides without having to faff around. I look forward to expanding my repertoire with some sweet options- baked apples are next!

Amazing little Air Fryer

I have to say that this is my second air fryer (another brand not being mentioned) and I had always found them a 'leave in the cupboard most of the time' devices.... However this little guy has changed my opinion completely!When I first opened the box (after my cat decided to let me do so - pic attached!) I was struck by how compact it is. This worried me as to capacity, but I needn't have been concerned as it is surprising how much you can fit into it despite it's diminutive size. As you can see form the pics I can easily fit in two large fish cakes PLUS chips! Absolutely great as in 20 minutes everything was cooked to perfection.I have mainly used it to cook fish and chips to be honest, as it just does it so much better than my oven... I mean A LOT BETTER... the fish is succulent and crispy, and the chips are lovely, with no oily residue. For this I simply used the 'Frozen Chips' preset. which seemed to give the perfect balance of heat and time.I did do some marinaded chicken drumsticks in it too... At first I put it on a little hot (as I hadn't realised I should really lower suggested temperatures from the packets as it is so much more efficient than my oven. Once I did this they came out brilliantly - really really juicy.Also one day I had some chips left over from a trip to my local chippy - so I popped them in the fridge and decided to try and heat them up the following day. Usually this results in either 'charcoal sticks' or sogginess.... not now! They came out great - just like they were when I got them fresh.... I was very impressed.I notice that you can also get a 'baking kit' - which I will seriously now buy, as I am convinced it will bake cakes just as well as it does the rest. Plus I notice there is also a little grille piece and skewer set as well... the two tier grill piece would be great to do more food, although I suspect you would need to lower temps a bit more to stop the stuff on the top burning.My Mum has been ill over my test period, so being able to get delicious and nutritious food cooked quickly and with almost no mess was perfect - Oh yes forgot to add how easy it is to clean. The food residue just falls off with almost no washing - and it's really easy to dry. This was one reason my previous fryer was not used, as it was such a pain to clean... Philips have done a really good job on making this one effortless to clean.I did cook some stuff using the manual temp/time settings, and that's how I realised about the lower required temps, however the presets are very accurate and so you hardly need to use the manual way. I did also use the 'keep warm function' for my chicken drumsticks, as they cooked so quick I wasn't actually hungry by the time they were done - it kept them warm without drying them out.I did also load up the app, and saw lots of great recipes. I didn't have time to try them due to my Mum being ill, but I am DEFINITELY GOING TO!!!There is only ONE NEGATIVE thing about this fryer, and that is the instructions (or lack of them). I have never had such a hard time finding an instruction leaflet, indeed if I hadn't been testing it for Philips, and so had a link included in one of the emails, I doubt I would have found them! Although you can get to grips with the machine without them, I recommend Philips either add them to the box, or give a CLEAR LINK to them in the package.... but really that's my only gripe.

Fantastic Air Fryer - Easy 5 Stars

I looked at various air fryers, and decided the Philips Essential 4.1L to be the best for me. I am so glad I made that choice. It is very quiet, cooks the food in no time and the food tastes fabulous. It is so simple to use, you can increase or decrease the temperature and add more or less to the cooking time while in use. It cooks the food in no time and you don't always need to add any oil. I mainly use it for chips, roasties, chicken drum sticks and thigh's, spring rolls, fish, pies & pasties, and it cooks them all quickly & perfectly. Cleaning the air fryer after use is also so simple and easy. I highly recommend this air fryer, I don't know why I waited so long to get one. Philips are a great brand and you can tell with this range of air fryers, buy one now!

Good but could be improved

Bought this to see if we would use it and might then upgrade to a bigger one. We knew it was small but the basket is over 7” wide but under 7” deep, so very few accessories, like a rack, will fit. We have had to buy a 6” rack, which, in reality, might be too small. Bear in mind, Philips only sell one accessory for this particular fryer and that is the baking tray. Also, the handle is riveted on the inside of the basket, taking up a small amount of the already limited space. They need to consider whether it could be riveted on the outside. A very small increase in the depth of the basket would make it possible to buy third party accessories but Philips might not want that! Can only fit 3 rashers of short back bacon on base of basket and even they overlap.

Good size for 1-2 people

My first Air Fryer experience and I'm enjoying the results very much. You can heat up or defrost, turkey burgers and real French fries can be made easily, quickly always crispy on outside and juicy inside. I appreciate the healthy use of less oil when cooking in an air fryer. Just wish both small sizes offered more exact digital temperature choices, as this air fryer only gives 25 degree increments to choose from, which does not satisfy recipe suggestions. I am learning to "improvise" by using given temperature choices and then adjusting the length of time to cook items. Philips is a wonderful company with incredible customer service and I have been helped by the representatives in learning how to use my new cooking method of air frying. Thank You Philips!!!

Practical kitchen appliance for 1-2 persons

A short user guide contains 5 pages of pictures without a single word. If this is not enough, there are a web link to the Philips support page and an app. For a good measure, a manual in 31 languages on 69 pages describes potential dangers and risks of using this device (mostly a common sense, but I've never before heard about the risk of acrylamide exposure - good to know, but no problem: of course, one can keep it under control too).Philips offers a 2-year warranty by default.The airfryer came with a Schuko power plug and a Schuko adapter.I thought of removing one star because of the extremely short power cord, but I don't want to be too harsh (Hi, Philips, do you hear me?)

I purchased this productas my wife and myself are now in early 80s and trying to make normal everyday tasks abit easier to carry out. We therefore ,after much research, that an Air cooker wouldbe simpler to use than a full size oven and easier to clean. The reality has been how ever that instructions are no wqhere full enough for us to use this machine for all our basic cooking requirements, i.e coking sausages only instructs cooking THIN sausages and we use the standard size ones. There is a so called APP that is available to greatly assist in using the air cooker. BUT we have no device to use with such an APP . So we are having to use be trial and a great deal of error.
