Philips Hue - Motion Sensor

There are few things more unpleasant than stubbing your toes trying to find the light switch in the dark. With the Philips Hue indoor motion detector, this problem is a thing of the past. It automates your lighting and switches it on automatically as soon as movements are detected. That's why you should use it: You can assign any lights and scenes, define the time and also adjust the sensitivity as you wish. It can be mounted anywhere and the installation is wireless. The Philips Hue Bridge, which is available in the range, is required for the smart home-capable and battery-operated motion detector. It can be operated via the app from home and on the go. You can set yourself when the switch-off should take place. Nailed down: The motion detector is quick and easy to put into operation, small, light and also energy-saving, because when it is daylight, it no longer switches on any other lights.

A no-brainer way to smarter lights

If you already have any Philips Hue bulbs then this sensor is a must-buy to turn them into a hands-free automated solution. The wireless sensors are easy to setup and the battery lasts years on moderate use. We have four of these sensors currently to trigger lights on movement in certain rooms at differing light levels depending on the time of day.The sensors also include temperature sensing and they work with Alexa, Google and Apple's HomeKit.

I paired the Hue Motion Sensor with a Hue Outdoor Lightstrip that I mounted under my bathroom sink to create a hidden nightlight that only turned on when needed, and it has been a delightful experience. The motion sensor has a magnetic base that you can screw in or simply stick on a magnetic surface (as I have) and the sensor itself attaches to the base magnetically so you can position it any way you need. You can adjust the motion sensitivity in the Hue app, and of course you can have the sensor activate different scenes depending on the time of day as well. You can even add the motion sensor to Apple Home you have accessories outside of Hue that you want to use it with, but I've gone all-in on Hue so I can't speak to its usefulness as a HomeKit accessory.

Excellent product

The motion sensor connected easily to my Philips Hue bridge via the Hue app. In addition to detecting motion, it is also a temperature sensor. The magmatic bracket can be attached at many different angles to the back of the sensor, not just "straight on", so you can point the sensor up, down, left, right and everything in between. The data appears in both my Hue app and my Apple Home app. I have configured it to trigger a light scene between certain times when it detects motion. The sensitivity to both daylight and motion is adjustable from the Hue app. Excellent product at a reasonable price.

Definitely worth the investment. I started using Hue bulbs about four years ago and have slowly added to the collection. Now I have over 30 items connected to the bridge. The motion sensors are worth their weight in gold. The dimmer switch too.My electric bill went down by $11/month when I installed motion sensors in the basement. Now the lights turn on and off automatically. I liked them so much I added a motion sensor in the kitchen, stairway, laundry room and the utility room.I thought I could save some money by getting a small handful of white bulbs and wish I had only invested in the color changing bulbs.I have my entire house automated. No more stumbling through the dark looking for a light switch or forgetting to turn a light off or getting blinded by a bright light in the middle of the night. Bedtime routines are a breeze with the automatic dimming and color changing bulbs. The Hue system definitely makes my life easier.

Great device, terrible execution...

TLSR: All and all a well built and capable sensor it is just lacking good software support and integration.I have owned this sensor for a few years now... The software support for what this bad boy can do is non-existent. For example, it doesn't integrate with any assistant and thus cannot be used to for automation or routines through Google or Amazon. It has a built in temp sensor that is not used at all. Based on the temp I would like to be able to change the light color, sending a notification if to hot/cold, or use the temp data with my home heating system through Google. The motion sensor works very well and the sensitivity adjustments are fairly intuitive. Again, my only complaint is the lack of assist integration. I currently can only set a range of hours for the motion sensor and would like to be able to set "sunrise" or "sunset" so it adjusted to the day instead of a specific hour.Battery lasts forever which is awesome. Lastly, I wish I could pause the sensor through an assistant or switch instead of just through the app. Sometimes when I am watching a movie I have to get up and turn the sensor around so it doesn't turn my loving room lights on during the movie.

Great motion sensor.

I use these in place of nightlight in my house. I've set them up in two different rooms where they can detect motion down either a hallway or through multiple rooms.Coupled with a timer function in the Philip's Hue app, they turn on when they detect motion, and then turn off automatically a few minutes later. However, I also have one setup as a dawn/dusk sensor so that it turns on a light in the evening while ignoring the motion detection settings. After a certain time, it switches the light off, and then switches over to the motion detection mode.

Hue mtion sensors can control Lifx bulbs via Hubit
26 August 2022

Purchased 3 Hue Motion Sensors version 2 to use with Lifx LED strip and a couple of Lifx Clean Bulbs. I did lots of research and Hue came out making tbe best with the fastest response time a a decent cool down time. They work flawlessly! Yes Zigbee Hue motion sensors controlling the Wifi lights. The strip is in a closet. The Hue sensor detects the door opening (did not want a contact switch since I have 4 bifold closet doors, One motion sensor can detect any door movement from inside the closet. I use the other sensors to turn the Clean bulbs on and off in the kitchen. How can Zigbee Hues control Lifx Wifi, I use a Habitat hub (no need for a Hue hub) and I get total control of all the smart equipment. I wish the Philips app was smarter.
23 July 2022

It does its basic function: turn on the lights when it perceives a movement. However, it can get annoying quite fast. What it does not do and should be doing?- turn on the light when there is movement AND there is not enough light. (It should not turn on the light in the middle of the day)- have a simple way to disable it, via one of the buttons of the dimmer switch.I do know there are non-Philips apps that can program it to do that, but Philips should fix their app.

Works well, and fairly quick to learn how to setup
15 August 2022

It took me a few tries to get this configured how I want it (using different settings for daytime and nighttime), but once I got used to the available options and created scenes to use as presets for the different times of day, it has been working great. After 11pm I have it set to use a dim scene to act as a hallway nightlight, but the rest of the time it is full brightness. But there is also a slider to adjust so it won't turn on if there is already enough natural light during the daytime. My only complaint is the price - although all Hue products have a premium price - and for motion sensors when this is on sale it is comparable in price to much lower quality non-Hue motion sensors.

i’m extremely invested in the hue ecosystem (lights, switches, strips, etc) and have used these sensors in various ways in three different homes. i love the flexibility - programming for me has been great, they are responsive, and work well (when they’re working). i found out tonight that my second sensor has gone bad. i’m having hvac problems and about to go out of town. since they also monitor temperature, i thought i’d move my basement closet sensor into the room i wanted to monitor. not only is this sensor not working, but i’m unable to reset it and fresh batteries don’t do anything (just like the last one, which i contacted philips about to eventually find that the only thing i could do is buy another - which i did). 2 of 3 of these sensors have gone bad for ... Morei’m extremely invested in the hue ecosystem (lights, switches, strips, etc) and have used these sensors in various ways in three different homes. i love the flexibility - programming for me has been great, they are responsive, and work well (when they’re working). i found out tonight that my second sensor has gone bad. i’m having hvac problems and about to go out of town. since they also monitor temperature, i thought i’d move my basement closet sensor into the room i wanted to monitor. not only is this sensor not working, but i’m unable to reset it and fresh batteries don’t do anything (just like the last one, which i contacted philips about to eventually find that the only thing i could do is buy another - which i did). 2 of 3 of these sensors have gone bad for me…that’s $100 out of $150 spent on these alone. it’s a huge bummer and i definitely feel stuck because i love these things and the other hue stuff i have, but i’m not real excited to spend another $50 with no promise of improvement. hope something is in-the-works to make these better.
