I bought this to replace a Philips Azure corded/cordless iron that had been in the family for 25 to 30 years (still working but ready for retirement). While I miss the cordless function, in all other respects the new iron is a wonderful upgrade from what was a brilliant iron in its day. My wash load is often very mixed and I can move from nylon to cotton to wool and back to silk without any problems. Despite what some others have said in reviews, I have had no problems ironing out wrinkles in heavy denim, or in delicates. I did have some water drips in the first few uses, but have not had problems since. The iron does what it claims too (which is a lot) and is a good weight, not too heavy or light. This was bought in mid-February 2018 to replace an old Tefal iron that had given about 15yrs sterling service. I did plenty of research before buying this iron - after reading lots of online reviews I went into John Lewis Oxford Street where I was given helpful information about what was on offer and the different features of various irons. I eventually decided on this Philips iron in the hope it would be powerful and efficient and because I liked the idea of the Optimal Tech feature, where the temperature is automatically set for you.However, it has been a disappointment. The iron is powerful compared to my old Tefal, but it also leaks brown scale all over my clothes, meaning I often have to wash clothes and bed linen twice over - once because they are dirty and the second time because the iron has leaked all over them.As for the actual performance, it's good on lighter fabrics such as silk and thin cotton but despite producing great clouds of steam it struggles with creased cotton bed linen or shirts. As other reviewers have commented, the reservoir is not large and needs to be refilled frequently. It's also very hard to see how much water is in the reservoir. When you are ironing thick cotton or linen and need the maximum steam setting, it can only be selected by moving the dial and then holding the switch in place. This is OK for short periods but tricky to hold in position for longer periods of time. The only thing I like about it is the long lead, hence the two stars.Next time (and I don't think it will be long before there is a next time) I'll try another Tefal.

I am very impressed with this iron. On first impressions I thought it would be a little heavy for my liking, but actually once I started to use it the weight wasn't an issue at all. The iron itself looks smart and is a good size. I found that the blue light on the handle did shine in my eyes, but I changed my hand position which solved the problem.I read the instruction booklet on opening the product, however these were illustrations rather than written and a little difficult to interpret. I wonder if these could do with some work perhaps. Filling the iron was easy enough, but in my poorly lit living room (and without my glasses on) it was tricky to see where the maximum water level was. There was some dripping from the iron on turning it horizontally, but I think this is because it had been overfilled slightly.I was dubious about the fact that there was no temperature gauge and wondered how effective the iron would be on different fabrics. I needn't have worried, as this iron left all my clothes crease-free and not once did I think that the iron might burn my clothes. It was lovely and smooth, it glided across the fabric! Another great feature was the length of the cable - plenty long enough to move around comfortably.After a few uses I am now used to how this iron works and I think it is great. I have always been a slow ironer so this helps to reduce the time taken stood behind the board. How this iron figures out the optimal temperature I will never know, but it is a clever piece of kit that certainly made my ironing experience faster and hassle-free. I would definitely recommend it!
