Pretty much perfect for my use case. These are providing general audio for unpowered devices (I.e. not monitoring). Aesthetically very pleasing, they fit better in white cabinets than standard black units. Most importantly, other reviewers were right - these small units really kick it for their small size. There isn’t much EQ adjustment, providing “production “ (= monitor) mode and “DJ” mode (=more low end) but “production” was clearer overall for us. Great value for the money.

Bought for a young family member who is entering the world of vinyl music. Easy to set up, so much so that I wasn’t asked for any help, they did it by themselves!! Sound is clear and has the ability to go loud without loosing quality. This particular set of speakers are Blue Tooth enabled, so have the added functionality of pairing with phones or other BT devices. Hard to find fault with the product.

I wanted better sound from my pc, so I'm running these via a dac. They have good bass without being overbearing, voices are natural and the treble reproduction is pretty good when switched to production mode rather than DJ, which is more muddled. I was using an old sound bar and these are so much better. Good clarity on hi Def music from jazz to classical and even heavy metal. So no complaints from me about the sound. My only complaints are the power lead pushes it further from the wall when placed on the desk, so not so discreet being quite bulky anyway next to a flat screen monitor, and the power switch being in the middle of the back plate is about the worst place it could be. Maybe the designer should try using products before putting them into production. Front ... MoreI wanted better sound from my pc, so I'm running these via a dac. For the price they are well worth a try.

Crystal Clear Audio! Want bass? Get a sub!
3 September 2018

I got the DM-40's expecting deep bass and just generally better sound quality than my Creative T5400 computer speakers or my Sony XB40 Bluetooth speaker. Now, I was wrong to be expecting earth rattling bass out of a pair of regular woofers and tweeters. What I got, however, was an incredibly WIDE soundstage, CRYSTAL clear audio, and yes, the bass is very defined if you crank it in an equalizer. These speakers are pretty darn flat. Flatter than any computer speaker I've ever had. But the beauty of that is that you can crank the bass to your taste! These speakers already shake the desk just a little, but if you want something that's going to thump against your chest or give you that low end that you really want for EDM, you're going to need a sub with these. Try looking for a powered sub first then some passive speakers to go with it. You might benefit from a setup like that if you're looking for bass.

Essential advice in Holborn
20 November 2023

I visited the Holborn branch confident that the team there would know exactly what they were talking about. My aim was to buy speakers for a turntable my niece is receiving for Christmas, and it was pointed out that the turntable probably doesn't have an amplifier. I checked with my sister, and, as RS stock the turntable in question, I was pointed to compatible speakers. Now, that's service!

Good speakers. But don't plug in headphones.
16 March 2024

Further to my original review posted about 5 months ago. I would like to add that I have just bought some Shure SRH840 headphones to use with this set up and would not recommend using headphones with these, as the background noise(electrical static) is awful when using the headphones socket. I get no noise with no music playing when plugged directly into my dac, but through the pioneer speakers it ruins the music. So stick to using them as decent speakers and ignore the headphones socket. The volume is also reduced when compared to my direct connection to my dac.

Great budget friendly DJ monitor

I love the design and color scheme, this is of course personal.Audio quality and output is quite decent for 4" woofer/drivers. Don't expect a have bass, but definitely a good thump.Good clarity, do make sure they are directed towards ear level, so you might also want to get some monitor pads to angle upwards if needed. You can clearly hear a difference when its not aimed towards you ears.Sound does not distort even at max levels.Input options RCA and 3,5mm is enough for me to hookup the laptop and a DJ controller at the same time.Price is very competitive compared to other resellers which are normally priced 25 to 50 euros higher. Also props for the customer service, first of all you can talk to someone if needed even in the weekend.Would recommend the ... MoreI love the design and color scheme, this is of course personal.Audio quality and output is quite decent for 4" woofer/drivers. I use these in a gaming set up. Subtle enough to at low volumes to make you're 128kbps downloads from '06 sound better than they used to and loud enough, when turned up to make your wisdoms enough. Instant pairing without making you look like a lemon and good looking enough to not have grilles!

Conclusion, these are going to be fine for watching movies and listening to music. The differences? there none. Just the volume level.

Sound great and brilliant customer service
15 November 2023

Bought these to improve my vinyl listening and did not disappoint. They were easy to set up and have a full sound and have great bass without compromising on quality. In store experience was also great as I didn’t know what I was looking for and James at the preston branch talked me through my options and ultimately suggested the 40d’s. Staff are super knowledgeable and friendly. Only niggle was the price which was slightly lower elsewhere but without the staff at richer sounds I wouldn’t even have considered these speakers so I’m happy to pay slightly more for there services.
