Platinum Fountain Pen #3776 Century Nice Lavande Medium Nib

The original #3776 series was designed by the late writing expert Haruo Umeda, known as “Mr. Fountain Pen,” along with the design team at Platinum Pen Company. Their aim was simple- to create the ideal fountain pen. The #3776 was made available to the public beginning in 1978. #3776 expresses the height in meters of Mt. Fuji, the highest and most beautiful peak in Japan. The innovative cap contains a unique “Slip & Seal” mechanism that prevents ink from drying out in the pen. Meanwhile, a newly redesigned nib and feed regulate the ink flow. Founded in 1919, Platinum Pens is now nearing a full century of achievement. The #3776 “Century” celebrates this approaching anniversary and continues Platinum Pens’ tradition of technological innovation. With Platinum Pens, the pleasure of writing and the use of fine writing instruments will always be evolving. The fountain pen has a 14kt gold nib and uses the Platinum converter or ink cartridges, but with the special Ink Cartridge Adapter it is also possible to use the Standard International ink cartridges. In 1919, Shunichi Nakata, started his fountain pen business that would later be known as “Platinum Fountain Pen Co.”. The Japanese brand is closely related to the legendary Nakaya fountain pen brand, where some of the finest fountain pens in the world are created. This expertise also goes into Platinum's own line of fine writing instruments.

I love this pen and the fine nib! I can't say enough good things about it - I have used it on planes without leaking, I use it everywhere, I absolutely love it. It's classy, just heavy enough, comfortable for my medium-sized hand, and I love the silver and black tones. The pen came from JetPens in a few days, faster than I thought it would. Lovely - thank you!! I'll be back.

I already have two other Platinum fountain pens. One of them is a Century so I didn’t hesitate picking this up. This is my favorite pen and I absolutely love the shade of lavender paired with the rose gold. Above it all, love how it writes...so smooth with just enough give. I don’t like writing with a stiff nib. :)

Beautiful and elegant, and a superb writer

The Platinum #3776 Century "Nice" (inspired by the city of Nice on the Cte d'Azur and the sunlight of Southern France) is a beautiful demonstrator pen. It has a frosted barrel which saves it from beeing too "blingy" and comes in some variations: with silver trimmings ("Nice Pur") and with coloured bodies ("Nice Lilas" and "Nice Lavande"), which are all pretty too, My favourite model is the "Rose", named after the rose gold trimmings. It's elegance pure. This is my second Platinum #3776 Century; the other one is a Chartres Blue with a medium nib which I have come to love even above some great Sailor and Pilot pens from the same price range. It's become my everyday writing instrument. It's become my everyday writing instrument. Now I wanted a second one with a fine nib for small paper formats and marginal notes, and fell for the charming looks of the Nice. The 14k gold nib is rather stiff (no flex at all), but it has a subtle "swing" to it and is smooth-going, with just the right amount of feedback that tells you you are writing with a pen, not a rollerball. It is not scratchy at all, which can be an issue with fine nibs. The cap fits very well and keeps the ink wet for weeks and months, in the unlikely case you don't get to use it for a while. It's a rather light pen, and the grip section is not too slim - two features that are important to me as they allow me to write for hours without my hand tiring. I don't post it, but it can be posted and still be well balanced. The pen comes in a pretty cardboard box, cartridge and converter included. It's Platinum's silver top converter, not the gold one, which may seem odd with regard to the pen's gold trimmings, but I like it this way. I think the silver matches the rose gold trimmings better than the yellowish color of the golden converter. A beautiful pen and a joy to write with!

Black Diamond - a dark beauty!
31 May 2019

The Black Diamond is another beautiful fountain pen in the 3776 line, which are my absolute favorites! This one is a transparent (or semi) black beauty with shining chrome trim. I own a half dozen of them in many different colors, all but one with soft fine nibs. They are in my opinion the finest, most responsive nib on the market. Lots of soft and flex nibs out there, nearly all of which I've tried, but this one gives my handwriting all the flair in a nice fine line - more like Amer. or Euro extra fine that flares easily to a medium. Not a wide variation in line definition, but the responsiveness of the nib allows me plenty of flourishing capability so I don't miss the fat lines. If you love expressive nibs, this is the closest thing I've found in a modern nib to compare to fine vintage flex or semi-flex nibs. Amazingly responsive and expressive; warning, they are highly addictive, and very affordable. Thanks Platinum and Anderson Pens for making them available!

I am shocked by how much I love this pen!
24 February 2018

I was looking at these for a long time before I bought. I wanted a more feminine pen. I love rose gold trim. I was worried about hearing about the harder nibs on these Platinum 3776 pens, but this nib is smooth! I use the pen posted, but it’s long enough to use unposted in my slightly larger female hand. It is a delight to write with. I like broad nibs, with a juicy writing experience. This pen doesn’t ooze, but lays down a nice line, with some line variation possible. Effortless writing.I am a bit surprised at how light this pen feels. I associate a bit of heft in a pen with quality, but there is no evidence that Platinum skimped on this pen. I thought about getting the clear version of this pen but found the fact that the converter did not match the rose gold trim to be distracting. It doesn’t match in the “Lavande” either, but that is not obvious through the lavender colored barrel.

Love at first write
27 June 2019

I love this pen! The medium nib is wonderful, feels and sounds a bit like a premium pencil. It lays down a lovely line, has a wonderful balance, and looks so different from anything else in my modest little collection. I keep reaching for this pen over and over. It's a joy!

Love the nib, but not the body
10 December 2021

Thoughts after ~a month of use:GOOD:- The nib feels great while writing. I usually prefer F's but I got this in M and the line is perfect.- Nice size and very light. I enjoy it both posted and unposted. (I have small-to-medium lady hands.)- Always starts on the first stroke. Maybe due to the special cap sealing mechanism? Then again, my TWSBI Diamond 580 hasn't hard started in nearly a year of use, so maybe not so special?BAD:- I was instantly struck by how cheap it feels. Not sure whether the other colors feel different, but this one sounds and feels like a $15 pen.- The grooves cut into the body. It looks like this "feature" is limited to the Nice translucent colorways. Visually it's neutral at best (not ****, but not "Ooh, that looks cool!"); ... MoreThoughts after ~a month of use:GOOD:- The nib feels great while writing. Visually it's neutral at best (not ****, but not "Ooh, that looks cool!"); tactile-wise the grooves are annoyingly sharp and, again, feel cheap. Luckily they don't continue down onto the grip, or I would definitely hate this pen.I'm having a hard time reconciling the good nib/writing experience with the underwhelming body experience. If I'd been able to handle it in person, I don't think I would have bought this colorway (even though I love the lavender/rose gold coloring of it). It does write beautifully, but in a world with SO many choices, I can't help feeling like there was probably a more OMG-I-love-it way I could have spent this much money, whether that's just on a different color of this pen, or some other pen entirely.

The Nib deserves five stars, the body of the pen deserves two
9 December 2021

The nib is perfection! The pen body is off-putting with surprisingly sharp edges on the vertical grooves and edges. I was shocked. I almost sent it back but I couldn't part with the beautiful writing nib.
