I know everyone loves Platinum as a beginner pen - Preppy, Prefounte, Plaisir are often recommended. Unfortunately, I have brought one of each as my starter pens and have been disappointed in their durability. They have all cracked on me. The Preppy and Plaisir have cracked at the body where the top snaps on from repeated opening and closing the cap. These are not my only pens so it’s not like I have opened and closed them that often. The Prefounte cap cracked on me. They each lasted only a few months with minimal use, I have had Pentel EnerGel $2.50 pens that are still going strong after years of use and multiple refill changes. I refuse to buy another Platinum pen when there are so many other choices.

I had bought a preppy and liked it how it wrote, but, understandably, its light because its very inexpensive. Because I prefer a "heavier" pen, i thought I'd see if there was an option.I found this pen and I really like it. It has a fantastic weight and it feels good to the touch. The shiny polish on the metal is nice, albeit will probably be prone to scratches. This does not matter because it is not expensive and will probably be my daily driver. In sum, if you like the preppy but like a heavier material, this is a great option.

I originally saw these in a store, but passed on them since I like slimmer pens. But I couldn't get it out of my mind,so I bought it. It's a very nice pen. It's lightweight, and has a nice rich color. I'm actually pretty thrilled that it uses the same nibs as the Preppy because it could be fun to swap out the nib sizes without a buying an entire new Plaisir. The fine nib on this wrote very smoothly for me, but it's not nearly as fine as my Pilot pens. Still, it's a decent size nib for a fine. I might get an EF Preppy to try that size out. All in all a good pen, though I thought it was weird that Jet Pens shipped it just in a plastic bag when I saw the pen come in a nice box when I first saw it at the store.

I bought this pen because I love how my Platinum Preppy writes, but I wanted something with a little nicer body. The color got me, in the end - I'm a sucker for all things violet and all things pastel. Function/feel: It was kind of a major struggle to get this one to start writing, but it DID eventually start up. I'm not sure how it happened, but I managed to fill it through the feed (ie I didn't just fill the cartridge and plug it in) but it still wouldn't write for a good 5-10 minutes. I guess it didn't fill through the same route that the ink would flow through? Or maybe it just randomly got temporarily clogged right away? It's still a mystery. Fortunately, it's writing fine now. And once I did get it started, it was immediately that beautiful light, smooth flow ... MoreI bought this pen because I love how my Platinum Preppy writes, but I wanted something with a little nicer body. And once I did get it started, it was immediately that beautiful light, smooth flow that I know and love from the Preppy. Aesthetics: As stated, I got this as an attempt to find a 'nicer-looking Preppy.' I succeeded. This one is as beautiful as the Preppy is not (to me). The design is great and the pen's overall aesthetics are very balanced. It's not too cutesy, but it's definitely a fun color. It's not too big, not too small. Not heavy but also not featherweight. I do feel like I could write all day with this and not get muscle fatigue or anything. Problems/potential negatives: Other than not writing out of the box and requiring some patience and fussing? The pull-off cap (not screw-off) is not going to be for everyone but I personally like a 'quick draw' pen, so that's actually a plus for me. Also, it's a bit of a bummer that it doesn't come with a cartridge converter, but I shouldn't complain, since very few under-$20 pens do. Overall: Pretty darn good value. It's exactly the price I would want to pay for a very pretty version of the Preppy. My only real complaint was that I had to spend $11 extra (so more than half this pen's cost) to get a converter, but that's an issue for another day. Just bear in mind that unless you have a ton of Platinum cartridges or converters around, this is essentially a $28.60 pen, not really a $17.60 one. But, with that taken into account, I still really like this pen.
I bought this on a whim after watching Brian Goulet espouse the qualities of this pen on YouTube. I needed a everyday carry replacement for a fountain pen that holds significant sentimental value, that I don't want to lose. I did not expect much at this price point. This is a phenomenally constructed pen. I am usually a Medium nib person, but this Fine nib was pretty great too. The writing experience is nice, and the pen feels surprisingly compact, ergonomic in the hand after a while. I did have some challenges to adjust my cursive writing style to this instrument, but I was not disappointed once I felt the smooth way in which this pen deposits ink onto paper. This is also a great value for the construction quality that this pen offers. They claim that this ink doesn't dry even after a year, and I have to believe them due to the beautiful mechanism they have developed for the pen cap. The locking motion is delightful, and overall, this pen offers a quality experience, that only aids in ones' writing endeavors.
I am not new to the fountain pen world and have a growing collection thanks to a fountain pen addiction. This pen was purchased along with the TWSBI Eco because I wanted to try a couple that were considered to be a bit nicer than your typical starter pen. Once it arrived, I immediately filled the converter, which I bought separately, with Platinum Carbon black ink. This pen is a dream to write with. Not only does it put down consistent and predictable lines, but the pen itself is quite lightweight, making it ideal for longer writing sessions. I do a lot of journaling and having a heavier pen can be a literal pain sometimes with the added weight. This pen does not have that problem and the ink just flows out at the right pace. Even though it is considered a cheap pen in the fountain pen world, it has the look of a much higher-priced pen and I believe writes like one as well. Personally, I typically prefer Medium nibs, but the Fine nib on this pen just feels right. On many occasions I have found myself not wanting to stop writing just because it is that good. I highly recommend it to anyone, whether you are looking for your first or one-hundredth fountain pen.
I Did Not Get This Pen From Goulet Pens (Love your videos! Love it if you give me a Twsbi Eco EF)For a long time, I was using a crappy all plastic Parker Jotter from India. It was $4 or 300 Indian Rupees and it was my very first fountain pen. It served me well but the built quality was trash and it was constantly LEAKING. The ink was not good on cheap notebook paper and I dreaded using it. I did get a converter for it though. But then I got this Platinum Plasir from my dads trip to Japan. I also got an Ohoto Tasche which was great if the nib was smaller. But, the Plasir struck me with its high built quality and amazing nib. This beats the Metropolitan and the Kaweco Sport on cheap notebook paper. The black ink was super black and I loved the way it didn't feather or bleed through much on my paper. My 7th-grade science class was doing a lot of notetaking and the ink flow was super good. And it was surprisingly light judging its metal body. Although it did look a little too professional, it still was a really good writer. If you are looking for a great pen for a student or a friend and don't need a convertor, the Platinum Plasir is a great alternative to the Lamy Safari and the Ohoto Tasche. I would recommend getting the ink catridges and convertor from Goulet Pens because they are a little more trustable than Amazon where you might get something that doesn't work with the pen since Platinum is known for having bad ink cartridges. Thanks For Reading My Review!
I love this Platinum Plaisir Fountain Pen - Pink. This pen has everything I was looking for. It is very lightweight due to its aluminum body, very smooth barrel, the cap posts securely, the nib and grip section is the same as the Platinum Preppy & Platinum Preppy WA. The nib and writing experience is definitely the same as the Platinum Preppy. I used the Platinum converter with it and it works perfectly with it. I did have to put a bit of silicone grease in the threads for the barrel as I noticed that the barrel would just unscrew itself. Same thing happened with the Platinum Preppy WA that I purchased earlier. All 3 of my Platinum pens never dried out even in freezing Colorado weather conditions. That snap and seal cap truly lives up to its promise. I love this pen ... MoreI love this Platinum Plaisir Fountain Pen - Pink. This pen has everything I was looking for. I love the preppy and figured I would graduate to the more expensive Plaisir to get the functionality of the Preppy in a dressed up body. I'm disappointed. The nibs and section portion are exactly the same as the preppy and are interchangeable as are the caps and bodies, but the cap doesn't fit firmly every time. It wiggles from side to side a bit. But not always. At first I thought it was just because the barrel was coming unscrewed from the section. I added an o-ring to provide some friction and while it stopped the loosening of the barrel, it didn't solve the cap problem. Then I tried a preppy cap and it fit firmly every time. Thankfully, I heard a click of the spring internally and the cap was suddenly firm and tight. Thankfully, I heard a click of the spring internally and the cap was suddenly firm and tight. Come to find out, while the grips beneath the cap band hold the cap well, the slip/seal mechanism in the cap secures the tip and it gets stuck in the depressed position quite frequently. The spring isn't strong enough to extend when uncapping the pen thus when re-capping, the pen loses the securing effect of the slip seal device. This is not just frustrating because it feels cheaper when it wiggles, it also means that I'm not getting a good air-tight seal. This seal is a major reason I went for a Plaisir over anything else in this price range. Several others in my office also have recently gotten a Plaisir and all of them have the same loose cap issues so I believe my is not a defective pen, the Plaisir just has this design issue. I'm guessing the different materials in the plaisir from the preppy must provide unintentional added friction thwarting the spring. My fix, slam the sap down on the silver band to 'help' the spring along, then cap the pen. This feels ****** in an office setting. With the Plaisir I lost the eye-dropper ability, I lost the slip and seal advantage, and I spent more money.
I got this pen in the fine nib, specifically for use in my logbook for my diabetes journal, which is usually writing in small spaces and requires precise writinitg and lines. Fitness for this purpose is perfect. The pen writes very well in spite of the very fine nib, still quite wet. Very rare to have a hard start or skipping. My one nitpicky gripe is the slickness of the finish itself. On ore than one occasion the pen has slipped or flipped or both out of my grasp and onto the floor, once directly on the nib. Thankfully I was able to get it back to excellent function again so no permanent harm done. However, a slightly more tactile finish might be a good idea, especially for such a lightweight pen. I do reccommend this pen as an excellent entry level pen along with the Metropolitan, with a slight edge given to the Metropolitan as it feels much better in the hand while writing. If you're on the fence about this pen, buy it. One thing to be aware of that has no bearing on the function of the pen, but you should be aware of: My Plaisir came apart in the box during shipping and the cartridge and nib unit and barrel were all loose in the box and it took a bit to get them all together again. In spite of this the pen works flawlessly and I am very happy with my purchase.
