I bought two of these for me and my son. Mine started leaking as soon I filled it. They did a poor job of gluing the hard plastic neck to my bag, which allows a thin, steady stream of water to shoot out. Too bad I didn’t test this before being at the trail head. Lucky I had my Nalgene bottles with me.My son’s worked fine. He liked the fast flow tube and valve. It’s hard to dry though, since there’s only the bottle neck to air it out.

After just over a year, with not that much use since I use different smaller bladders for skiing and biking, the bottom segment of the hose is clogged. No obvious way to detach from bladder to clean.Cleaning brush won't go down the hose because the thing the hoses attach to is too narrow.I go online to look at replacement hoses for this model. Not only is it $30 for just a hose (!!!) the reviews for the replacement hoses are lousy because apparently the new hose replacements are a different material and crimp easily.https://www.backcountry.com/platypus-big-zip-evo-drink-tube-kitAside from the hose, which is kinda essential, it works fine. Sigh.

I have used platypus reservoirs for years, as they seem to perform far better than other brands with daily use in tough conditions. This new design, however has a major flaw as the water tube easily detaches from the reservoir when you slide it into your pack, or as you are going about your day. The connection point is low and the tube is pushed up by resistance against your pack as you drop it into place. That means that sometimes it works as intended, but other times you pick up your pack, far from home, and your THREE LITERS of water are all dumped into the bottom of your bag. No one packs around 3L of water if they don't need it, which makes this flaw downright dangerous. I would love to buy another Platypus reservoir, but don't want to deal with this ... MoreI have used platypus reservoirs for years, as they seem to perform far better than other brands with daily use in tough conditions. My reservoir was delivered two days before my backpacking trip and arrived with a small hole in it. This caused it to leak and resulted in the inability to use it during my backpacking trip. I was extremely disappointed in the fact that it arrived in this poor condition because I specifically bought this because it was supposed to be a good brand. I tried calling the number for the website and no one ever answered so I am very displeased and will not make another purchase from this company.
I have used various Platypus units since they first hit the market. I got a 2L Evo as my Big Zip SL developed a small hole at the bottom. I put this in my bag and into the boot of the car. Ninety minutes later most of the water was in my rucksack or the car. The top seal is hopeless even with the poorly fitting blue “handle”. Water pours out. Useless. What have you done Platypus?
I bought one of these on the 18th of June for my son to use on his Duke of Edinburgh bronze expedition. I've had Platypus products before so I know they are good quality. However I'm disappointed with this one. The reservoir and the tubing are very good and there really is no bad taste. but the shut-off valve is a poor design. My son was out in the wild for less than two days and the shut-off valve fell out of the tube and was lost. It's easy to see how it would fall out as it only has one ridge on the bayonet that goes into the tube; all the other fittings have two or three ridges and they seem to be wider so they will 'dig in' more to the side of the tube. In terms of design this has to be either an oversight or a petty attempt at cost-saving. In terms of design this has to be either an oversight or a petty attempt at cost-saving. It's a shame, because now I either risk buying a Platypus valve that might get lost, or try one from a random factory in China that has three ridges, but might not be food safe.
Tried it once so far, no leaks and seems solid with good quality. The hose is nice and long and can be trimmed to size. I found it a bit annoying to fill as you have to hold the black piece and pinch at the same time, fine for the tap but a little finicky if filling from a stream or pond.I think there are a few things (like the hose clip on the bag) that add weight without a lot of return. One tiny thing is that the bite valve is a bit aggressive and pinched my tongue a few times. Hopefully will loosen over time.Over all it does the job and the baffling is very nice.
I bought this because I wanted a hydration bag that was compatible with my new backpack and one that had a higher capacity than 2 liter. I checked it, and it fits perfectly. My old MARPAT backpack wasn't anywhere near big enough for what I needed and it wasn't hydration compatible. My new backpack is. Now this isn't designed for putting on your back like the one that came with the MARPAT backpack. It's designed for putting inside a hydration compatible backpack. That's where it's usefulness is best. It's a specialty item.
Weak plastic! The mouthpiece lever broke right away. When I got a replacement hose, they had changed materials I guess, and the hose was way too soft and CONSTANTLY kinked. I had to open up my bag, dig stuff out, gingerly rearrange the hose and then hope it didn't rekink MULTIPLE TIMES per hiking day. Even just having a full pack with a bit of pressure against the back of the bladder was enough to kink the hose down at the base.ALSO they use a non-standard hose size, so you can't even buy the CamelBack, Osprey, or off brand mouthpieces and hoses. It's near impossible to find replacement parts for the Platypus hose/mouthpiece in person. The ones they sell through their website are crazy pricey. ($30 just for the hose.)Just stick to CamelBack. Serves its purpose. I like the big zip for the wide top opening. Flow is fine if hose doesn’t get kinked even with MSR thrulink attached. 4 stars as it could be lighter and is on the heavier side of bladders if you are concerned about every ounce of weight. I would still choose this option over the Hoser bladder as these connections are all universal attachments for other brands.
