This is my second amp from the Positive Grid Spark family. I previously had a 40 watt Spark. I returned it because I didn't care for the tone quality and it was lacking other features, like battery power and an external speaker port, that would have made keeping the amp worth while. (I later tested a Nu X Mighty Space which had other issues. Also not a keeper. I personally prefer the Spark 40.)The Spark Go is a totally different experience. It isn't particularly powerful, but it does boost the volume of your acoustic guitar well enough to be better heard while preserving good tone.A really great feature is how it will decipher your music from your personal library. When you play your songs, it will show the chords being played. So if you ever had a song where you weren't sure of the chord progressions, this is a cool tool to help you figure it out.The only down side I find is the audio quality when using it as a bluetooth speaker. It's just not dynamic. The backing tracks sound far better than music in my personal music library.I highly recommend this amp to any player. It's compactness, it's tone and the versatility make this wonderfully useful for practice, exploring effects, learning new things, noodling ...... the list goes on. I’m guessing not much could be done with speakers of this size (or maybe they could have used higher quality components and the item would have cost more) but it’s almost unusable for a bass guitar. I have pretty low output bass guitars (both with passive pickups) and the sound is honestly pretty unlistenable from the speaker. It works fine as an audio interface and/or listening with headphones connected but I already have headphone amps and didn’t really plan to use the Go through headphones much. Even with my guitars, the sound breaks up coming out of the speaker even on clean tones if you get to a medium volume level (or more). The Bluetooth will stay connected to the device from my newest Samsung tablets including the Samsung Galaxy S8 Ultra, however the modeling for the different amps is constantly disconnects so it's useless. I'm debating upon whether to return it for a Spark Mini or go with another brand because I don't know if the Spark mini will have the same connectivity issues with my Samsung tablets. I do really like the tiny size and the convenience of the Spark Go. The sound is good enough for practicing at home with or without headphones. I do think it doesn't quite get loud enough and I think volume would really help this thing. I do like having different tones at my fingertips, but none of them are amazing, IMO, they're all just OK.I also think I hear this additional washy / shimmer reverb quality in every single reverb option available - it's literally in the spring reverb presets; and you cannot tune or turn off! It sounds okay, I guess, for making a solo guitar sound bigger and more lush, but the lack of any ability to tune it or disable it (without also disabling the spring or plate or whatever) reverb is super frustrating. First the pros: it is really well built. The construction is very sturdy and nothing about it feels cheap. The size is obviously the entire selling point and for that it wins some points. As a Bluetooth speaker I found it to be adequate for background noise and plenty loud enough, but there’s very little bass. The size is obviously the entire selling point and for that it wins some points. I will say that I feel like listening to music through it sounded louder than when I play my guitar through it. Also, there is noticeable clipping (speaker crackling) when the volume is up loud.The speaker is what you should realistically expect from a unit this small. It is not “room filling” sound by any definition. This is not something you’d take to go jam with people outside of a very small and intimate living room set up. It is not built to gig anywhere there is already a lot of noise like on the street somewhere. To put it in perspective, this gets about as loud as someone playing an acoustic unplugged. So it would be a great accompaniment to playing with someone else in that sense. The low ends are virtually non existent so you do end up with a rather thin sound but again, that tiny speaker can only do so much.Conclusion: this is still a great little amp for the money and given that the Go uses the software in the same way the rest of the Spark family does, that’s where you get your money’s worth. If you use this as intended, as a practice amp, and run it through a pair of decent headphones, then all the other audio issues go away. This is where it shines and becomes a very powerful practice tool in my opinion. Just don’t expect it to be something it’s not given its size.
I am a solo entertainer. I play both keyboard and guitar, switching between the two every few songs. The other night I started my show by showing off how incredible my guitar sounds through this little amp. By the third song I could tell it was gonna be a great night. I put the guitar down to play a few songs on piano, but when I reached for my guitar again, the Spark GO had powered itself off! I was used to my Spark 40 going into sleep mode and I knew that with a few plucks on the strings it should wake back up…but it never did, leaving me looking completely confused and helpless onstage with a loaded dance floor staring at me, waiting in anticipation for the next song! My iPad is set to NEVER shut off, my Spark GO and Spark controller are both plugged into power. There really iwas no reason for this to happen!
The good: The unit size, audio and guitar sound through the built-in speaker are great. Easy to plug and jam, easy to take anywhere. The app is feature packed, between backing tracks, smart jam and ability to shape your tone. The bad: The tone connectivity with the app is glitchy, it randomly drops and the app seems unaware, changing tone settings just does nothing until manually having to reconnect in settings. The major issue I have tho is the very poor, practically useless, sound quality when connected to external speakers or amp. I've tried FRFR, studio monitors, guitar amp. Each case the guitar tone is weak, muffled, unpleasant. The BT audio is better but still affected.
