PRS SE Custom 24 Electric Guitar - Charcoal Cherry Burst

The Custom 24 is part of the core range of PRS guitars, and one of their longstanding models. The Custom 24 can be considered a modern classic with its merge of vintage construction and aesthetics with features designed to please the modern player. The core range are all crafted to a high standard in PRS' USA factory in Maryland. The quality craftsmanship, vintage inspiration, and modern features combine to make the Custom 24 a truly special instrument. The Custom 24 uses the tried and tested combo of a mahogany body with a set mahogany neck. This pairing is beloved by players for its excellent sustain, and some say it adds warmth to the tone. In addition to the mahogany body is a flame maple top which is more visually interesting than plain mahogany and gives the guitar a striking look, especially with this lush Faded Whale Blue finish. The Custom 24 comes loaded with two PRS 85/15 humbuckers. These are modern updates to PRS' original humbuckers from 1985. These pickups have all the punch and power that you'd expect from humbuckers but with emphasis in the upper midrange, and a less prominent lower midrange. The 85/15s are articulate with great note definition which means they handle genres as wide as jazz, blues, funk, and rock. To give this guitar even greater versatility PRS have given it a 5-way pickup selector which adds single-coil-like tones in positions 2 and 4.

An incredibly versatile, modernized guitar

Put simply, this is exactly the guitar I've been searching for. From every angle, the attention to detail of craftsmanship for the price is superb. It's a very comfortable guitar, the neck is fast and comfortable. I used to play an Epi LP, before I bought an Ibanez RG, but now I've finally found the perfect middle ground with this PRS. Splitting the humbuckers is perfect for squeezing out strat tones, and the body really fills out the sound without the weight and thickness of a LP. Aesthetically, its beautiful. In my opinion, the classiest looking custom 24 on the market (with an ebony fretboard!). It looks and plays beautifully for hard rock, jazz, and anything in between. Even without locking tuners, it's very stable. The 85/15 "S" pickups are just about up to par ... MorePut simply, this is exactly the guitar I've been searching for. Overall I'm just very pleased with this guitar, as someone who doesn't like to (and can't afford to) hoard different guitars for different styles of playing.

Could have been better.

Overall:Let met start off by saying the potential of the SE line of PRS guitars is pretty good for the price of the guitars. I purchased a Black Gold Burst Custom 24 from zZounds in march. I also replaced the stock tuners with SE locking tuners. I will start off with the pros for this guitar.- The neck feels good. I find a comfortable middle ground with the neck. It's roundish but not like half a baseball bat in my hand.- The guitar sits and hangs from a strap comfortably.- The weight is good.- Overall it is not a bad guitar. The Cons- The nut is absolutely atrocious. I use tens in standard tuning and they don't feel bad on this guitar, but the amount of work I did to the stock nut was ridiculous just to get the thing to stay in tune. With the kind of quality PRS puts into the looks of these, a 15 dollar nut upgrade should seem like a no brainer. The string height, even with the stock 9s, at the nut was a nightmare.- On the guitar I received, when the volume pot is maxed there is distortion. This is also an easy fix, but should I have had to fix it? I don't think I should have.- The pickups are OK. They will suffice for just about any music you want to play, but there are much better pickups. Again these things are replaceable and every ear is going to feel a little different about them.I know I am somewhat unfairly comparing the SE to the 96 standard 24 I used to own, in all reality there is no comparison between the 2 guitars, but I feel at this price, the least that could be done at the factory is a proper functioning nut and pots.

Love this guitar, had this for a month now, great feel great look, and amazing sound. I play a little of everything and this guitar sounds great for all of it. I got this even cheap at the store for 720. WHAT A PRICE! I highly recommend this guitar if you want a high quality guitar for under 1000. And for the tuning comment, I play every day 1 to 3 hours bending strings constantly, I tune it once a week, it's practically still in tune. I just have to give the knob a little touch. Only issue I had at first was the back of the neck took some time getting used to sliding up and down the board with the finish on it. But I easily adjusted after a few days. That's the only thing I could nitpick, but still not worthy of losing the 5 stars

Great guitar minor glitches
11 December 2013

This is a fantastic guitar for the money. I absolutely love the neck, the weight and the balance. I bought the Tobacco Sunburst version and the finish is nice. The bridge pickup is very bright, but that is what I was looking personally looking for. It may not suit some players taste, especially those playing metal, etc. I bought the guitar in store and after playing it knew there would have to be some adjustments. As a matter of fact this guitar was so badly set up ( hopefully not by a GC tech) I imagine that is why it hadn't sold. Come to find out many players are having trouble with the guitar not staying in tune. There are various PRS forums about this issue. I found that my issue was the nut. As a matter of fact this guitar was so badly set up ( hopefully not by a GC tech) I imagine that is why it hadn't sold. Come to find out many players are having trouble with the guitar not staying in tune. There are various PRS forums about this issue. I found that my issue was the nut. After inspecting it closely the string guides in the nut were not wide enough for the E A D G strings to slide without binding. I resolved the issue myself by purchasing a micro file set from LOWE's for 2.50 and the finest metal sand paper I could find. I gingerly and gradually widened each string guide and finished with very light sanding. If you do this make sure that you do make the guides deeper! This fix absolutely solved my issue and now after lowering the saddles to their lowest height, adjusting the trem height and a minor neck tweek the action is low and smooth and this has a buttery feel and now never goes out of tune no matter how much I use the trem. Obviously, from all the people reporting the same issue there is a manufacturing/quality control issue regarding the nut, but I would start with this simple fix before replacing saddles, etc or the trem itself. Very happy with this guitar and covers a range of musical styles. I recommend even though I had those initial issues and 5 stars despite because it was such a simple fix.

New 2017 PRS SE Custom 24 in Tompas Green

Like many, I don't typically write reviews. I have tons of American, Japanese, Korean and Mexican gear. (If that helps my credibility at all). Anyway I was never a fan of PRS, I was strictly a Fender, Gibson, Gretsch and Ibanez king of guy. Anyway, my local Guitar Center has a used PRS custom 24 and I picked it up and played on it for a while and fell in love with it. The guitar basically played itself! All the controls were Right where they are supposed to be and the neck felt unlike anything I ever played. Needless to say I could not afford the $3200 price tag on it. I went home and googled it and found out that PRS was releasing a new line of their SE models. All I can say is this guitar blows away everything, I even compared it to the $3200 one still hanging in the store. The fit and finish is just as good and the fret work is impeccable. These 85/15 pickups sound better than the pickups in the $3200 one. This SE is a dream to play and sounds amazing, buy one you will not be disappointed. The fit and finish is better than my American Strat, Tele, Les Paul & SG. Now on a different note. This guitar will not sound like a Strat, Tele, Les Paul or an SG. It has its own beautiful voice. It's sounds full, warm and round. Never harsh, regardless of the position of the pickup selector. Also, when you split the pick ups, it actually sounds like a single coils and not like half of a humbucker. I love the easy access to the upper frets and yes frets 23 & 24 are actually playable. The bottom line is this guitar has great manners and is one of the best guitars that I've ever played. Buy one you will not regret it!

Nice Guitar
1 July 2018

I have been seeing this guitar in my local GC for the last couple of the months. At first, I dismissed this guitar because I usually lean toward Fender and Gibson products. However, I started playing it and it became my "go to" guitar when I visited the store. I played it so often I thought I might as well buy it. I have not been disappointed. I like the neck feel, tone, ease of playing, and the aesthetics. I played this through an EVH and a Fender Princeton Reverb and the guitar with both amp combinations sounded wonderful. Yesterday I played a McCarty 594 and I must say that I like this guitar better. Hard to believe because of the price difference, but it is true. I think that if you buy this guitar, you will be happy.

Oddly Disappointing
11 November 2023

Overall:I just started the return on the Blood Orange 24-08 SE I received yesterday. Grudgingly. Out of the box, the first thing I noticed was a couple of small finish blemishes on the face that looked like glue might have soaked through the veneer blocking the stain. They are tiny, but once seen they are like search lights. Where the neck meets the body showed incredibly rough sanding, possibly more glue staining and the color of the grain fill was so off it shows up in the end grain as noticeably light colored dots. There are a couple of what looks like black felt tipped pen marks along the top of the body, like maybe they were used to align the veneer or routing but didn't get completely sanded away. All the blems are trapped under the very thick and polished ... MoreOverall:I just started the return on the Blood Orange 24-08 SE I received yesterday. Grudgingly. All the blems are trapped under the very thick and polished finish and cannot be from handling. And, there were at least three high sharp frets way up on the neck that still contain fibers from the last rag to wipe it down. The tuners are some of the worst I've ever seen on a guitar, much less an $800 guitar, and that or the the intonation makes this guitar un-tuneable. I failed to look at the PRS forum before making this purchase and I won't make that mistake again. QC issues with the finish are rampant and not just with the SE models. Overall this was a terrible New Guitar Day experience and it will be a long time before I consider another PRS in any price range. Thanks to zZounds for making the process, buying and returning, so easy.

This guitar is awesome
9 November 2023

Overall:I don't care what anyone says, this guitar comes with low action, sounds fantastic, and plays well. I stretched the strings and tuned it up in record time. This guitar takes away all barriers for a new player. Someone can learn and become great with this instrument. I plan to do great things with this purchase. Not to mention it is absolutely beautiful. Two things I plan to do is upgrade the volume and tone knobs and I purchased locking tuners. I plan to put D'addario strings on it as well. I would highly recommend buying this, especially while it's on sale.
