Quiet, powerful. Shooting sports for a living...this was the best decision for my photography storage needs. I was replacing my Drobos and this seemed ideal. However when I opened the box I could not believe how OVER MY HEAD the tech was. Thoughts of returning it... but then I called their Support Number and was amazed that the tech would guide me through the entire setup process.

I purchased this NAS on 24 February 2019. I had no problems with this NAS until I decided to increase my storage in April 2023. Once I had the new disks installed the unit would not power on. This is a known issue. Do a google search and check out the QNAP forum documenting the failures. My original drives have a 5 year warranty and are still covered. So, the NAS died before the disks - I've never seen this before.

This is my one year review. I run Final Cut Pro and Davinci Resolve and have been using this little giant of a server as my daily editing for a full year. I would say there is a learning curve going into the set up but once you get your head wrapped around the interface you will be happy with it! it is not a plug and play storage device, it is so much more than that. Yes I have had some connectivity issues but with good customer support I was back up and going. QNAP really does try to take care of their customers. I recently added two more drives to the storage pool and am thrilled with the speed and performance of the RAID 5 configuration. I have 1TB of NVME cache and 48TB of workable storage. I routinely get 1400 Read and 750 write speeds on TB3. The best part is ... MoreThis is my one year review. You can add 2 M.2 chips for cache acceleration, then 2 2.5 SSDs and 4 HDDs to use QTIER, where they prioritize hot files (frequently used) and cold files (longer storage) onto SSDs and HDDs respectively. Great NAS with a graphic processing powerful enough for multimedia tasks and running a PLEX server. So far so good, no problem with the unit. I use QTS on this unit but it also support QTS Hero for faster processing.
I bought this unit to replace a dead 6 year old QNAP NAS. Setup was pretty easy, and moving old drives to new NAS was very simple. RAID level and data was intact and ready to use in minutes. The only issue I have is due to misunderstanding on my part. The unit comes with a dual-port TB3 card, but it can only be used for networking. I thought I could plug a couple of TB3 computers into it and use some of the storage in the NAS for more of a DAS setup. No luck, so keep that in mind.
This works great, but it is NOT for someone who does not understand a lot of technical talk about IP addresses and getting it set up. Once I got it setup with the help of a QNAP guy controlling my computer for a few minutes it worked flawlessly. As of March 2022 there are still a number of security issues with it, so I only turn it on when I am actively working on my photos.
I'm conflicted on this one. I purchased this originally March 2019, around when this unit first came out, and it proved to be a competent, beefy NAS for our production company for over 5 years.This week, we needed to change the external UPS location, so we needed to temporarily shutdown everything attached. Shutdown the NAS, moved the batter backup to its new location.. but the NAS never booted back up again.Did some research, and found out that this series has a high failure rate where the motherboard stops working after a short (relatively) period of time. QNAP does not sell this part separately, so I was billed $750 for an out-of-warranty repair.Just do your research, this is now a well-established issue for this unit.

Setup was easy through the UI (although it does help to have familiarity with storage terms like storage pool, volume, folder, logical unit number, etc.) and so far all the management tasks I've needed (shrinking one of the volumes and growing another volume, scheduling periodic disk health tests, and setting up email notification of certain event types) have all been available through the UI. The UI is fast and responsive and I've been able to achieve 336 MB/s write speed and 880 MB/s read speed via Thunderbolt connection using the Black Magic disk speed test. I did Put 5x 12TB drives in for a smooth raid5 setup. 12tb drives and higher gives you fastest read and write options. In this setup Im getting a 800mb/s read and write. Enough to do multiple 4k and 8K streams.4 stars for how it works, but its kind of a hassle to set up everything. But once its up, great system for the next 10 years.
