I really like the fact that this latest Pi (3B+) has WiFi and Bluetooth built in. It's really nice not having to deal with dongles, and all of the clutter that comes with them. And the performance of this new processor is breathtaking... it's very fast, and faster is better! But...I continue to be disappointed with the lack of support for headless operation. There are literally hundreds of config items that could be set up in `/boot`... imagine various "standard recipes" tailored to a specific network environment or usage for those that are less familiar with Linux admin. The Raspbian keepers needn't create these recipes, but they should at minimum provide the means for the user base to do so.

With the Pi4 out now it means that Pi3's such as this are now unbelievable value. Don't get me wrong a top spec Pi4 running a light Linux Distribution is a pretty decent desktop alternative but the Pi3 is still perfect for the original concept of learning coding and small manufacturing jobs such as making a home media hub. I have a couple of different single board computers and tbh the Pi is by far and away the most stable and best supported. I bought this as it is an absolute bargain. It is going in a nice clear acrylic case complete with heat Sinks and a fan along with a nice kit of electronic components and a circuit board. I am hoping that my young son gets into a bit of electronics, enginering and coding. That was the original idea behind the Pi; even if he ... I was surprised how much you can do with this little single-board computer.
So now that the new hotness is the Raspberry Pi 4, I've gone ahead and bought (and will be buying another) 3B+ like this one. For one, it's at a great price right now through Micro Center. But other than that, it has the following advantages:1. It can use the Raspberry Pi PoE HAT. This means you can slap a board on there and power the Pi through the on-board ethernet port, without any cable splitters or injectors or other mess. The 4 can do this, but the non-plus 3B cannot.2. It has a full-sized HDMI port. I understand why they went to the micro-HDMI on the 4, but frankly, it's a terrible connector and prone to breakage. As my use case is as a (1080p) media center device, I'd rather have the beefy connector.3. 5GHz wifi. The Pi 4 has this as well, and will ... Extremely easy to get going with this. I tinkered very lighlty with Arduino in the past and wanted an easy way to make REST requests and display data pulled down to external displays.If you are familiar with Linux command line and python this is a must-have. The Python GPIO module is easy to use and there are so many possibilities with this.I installed Rapsberry OS to get going and will probably stick with it. Very impressed with the pi, such a small device yet so much power. Will definitely get a four and install retro pi at some point

But mine didn't even last 2 weeks. first time I shut it down, it blew it's 3.3v regulator somehow and is now an unrepairable coaster. As a seasoned hardware hacker, with hundreds of routers, game consoles, chipsets, motherboards and SoCs of all sorts successfully hacked to run full Linux, I am disgusted that there is not a thing that can be done to this thing because of it's insane and secret bootloader system they designed from scratch so they could restrict it's potential use cases. It would be extremely useful if they would allow PoE (no brainier) and they even include Poe headers but provide no documentation on their use and further investigation showed it is not currently possible to ... What? Why? The bug that killed mine is well-known to the manufacturer. It is documented in big red letters at the top of their FAQ. "is your 3.3v rail dead? Then pi is dead. It happens sometimes from a short or spontaneously from nothing at all. We don't know the cause" The question is, why are they still shipping these known faulty units instead of recalling them? Poor service all around. I thought the entire point of the Raspberry Pi was to be open source Hardware with Unlimited customization ability. turns out it is probably the most closed down and unconfigureable of all the developer boards.
