Having the built-in wifi makes the Zero-W a nearly stand-alone solution for many tasks, with more than enough local intelligence. And the price is reasonable. (In fact it may be overkill for home automation, but for small quantities that's not a bad way to go.)My only real gripe us that the serial port normally available on the connectors is a minimal implementation, which is sensitive to the clock speed; the better serial hardware is connected to the Bluetooth transponder. The Pi is great, it was extremely well priced at 15 dollars (compred to 30-45$ on amazon or another retailer which is outrageous) and worked fine my only reason for having 4 stars is that you were only able to buy one. I need 4 for the project I am working on and and having to go through the store multiple times or even having to come on different days is quite annoying.
I had bought these as a gift for my nephews. They love to destruct things. So I told them that they can do what ever they want to this. I gave them a few project ideas. I showed them my original Raspberry Pi, and showed them how it's the same processing speed and RAM memory as mine but a lot smaller and more compact, it also has built in WIFI and Bluetooth as mine did not at the time.I hope that they learn to solder something on to it, or program it to play games. I may get one for myself but I still have yet to do some things with my original Raspberry Pi.

The 0w is not recommended for HA but I found that by using DietPi, faith and patience during install this works fine. With HA I run mosquitto for MQTT and control more than 20 ESP8266 based wifi switches and sensors and still have processing/memory headroom.I also use one to amazingly simplify my 3d printing workflow by running Octoprint on a 0w. Although the Octoprint developer specifically points out that the 0w has insufficient horsepower to run it, it works fine with the lightweight Dietpi menu driven OS. Just don't try to slice with it. The website clearly states 1 per household, yet the Denver store let somebody buy the entire inventory of 24 at one time. This was confirmed to me by a store employee that said they weren't aware of the policy, and made the sale this morning. The long-term customers who need 1 RPI for a project are getting ripped off by commercial operations that are buying and reselling at a 500% markup. MicroCenter, you can do better than this.
