Alkalinity Too High

I purchased this salt mix partially for the supposed consistency of parameters, but mostly because the parameters are supposed to be close to that of natural seawater. Ca and Mg are exactly what the bucket says they should be, 420ppm and 1,250ppm respectively, but alkalinity consistently hovers around the 9.6 dKh, way too high for ULNS. Bucket says the mix should be between 7.8 and 8.2 dKh @ 35ppt. Tests performed with Salifert test kits, salt mix taken from different parts of the bucket. Will definitely be switching back to Instant Ocean when I need salt mix next. There is no value in paying the price premium for Red Sea salt if the parameters are not as advertised.

Broken Bucket

They shipped the bucket with zero padding or protection just inside a box. Of course it was going to break. Bad customer service, they just wanted to offer 10% off. Not even a replacement or the ability to return it. Half the salt was basically a brick and unusable. Won't be ordering from here anymore. Use the salt bags if you can't ship a bucket correctly.

Disappointed
11 December 2022

I am new to reefing and bought this because it was recommended. I have 2 bulk bags from the initial set up of the tank. Almost done the first 1 and finally got testing equipment for the 3 main elements. My calcium is at 350 ppm, magnesium is at 800 ppm, and alk is 7.2 dKH. Decided to open up the 2 bag just to see if the results would be the same and unfortunately they were the same results. I will not be purchasing this salt again

Switched to Red Sea to try their salt instead of the same old Reef Crystals like normal. Been reefing for 15 years or so. Wanted to try RS in hopes of less brown crap (clay) in my bulk mixing container. Unfortunately when I received the first bucket of Red Sea Blue mix, I mixed the salt per the directions and then tested the perimeters. Unfortunately the results was very disappointing. Mixed at 70* then increased to 77* (tank temp) @ 1.025 Im only getting Alk 6.4 , Ca 300, Mag 800 Ummm so not good. Tried mixing several different ways in hopes of better results and no difference or improvement. Batch number area on the bucket is blank unfortunately. Contacted BRS and they quickly sent me out a new bucket. This bucket results @ 1.025 Alk 6.4, Ca 320, didnt even both wasting any mag reagent. On both buckets of mix I followed the directions to a T. Also tried heating the water to 77*F and then mixing. The results this way was pretty much the same. All testing equipment has been calibrated and are showing accurate results. AS A BIG NOTE: If Red Sea would actually put the batch number on the stupid bucket I would know if I simply getting the very poor results from the same batch yet different buckets or if they have a multiple batch issue. My opinion on that is poor quality control. GUESS ILL BE TRYING SOMETHING ELSE.

A salt thats proclaimed numbers match. I was playing the chase game with another salt. I could not get my number's right because of the high calcium to alkalinity. So I switched to this salt. The "my batch" numbers were almost identical to what I tested my first batch at. Corals looked very happy after that first water change. No more chasing numbers, just maintaining with a good 2-part. I mix 2.5 cups at a time with 20 minutes in between then slowly raise the temperature to the tank's. Mixes clear in no time, PH stable in a few hours. This may vary considering many factors. Ordered three times and I have received the same batch number. This batch comes out to Alk, 8.6-8.7 Cal, 430-445, and Mag, 1390. Great for SPS tanks

I could not be happier with this salt for stability. I always test my water change water on the first batch of any new salt I buy. I have never, not once, gotten anything other then 8 dkh, 430 cal 1280 mag. For those of you who may think those numbers are low, they may be for your tank. Be careful with the pro. That stuff runs hot and if your not one for numbers, doing a water change may well kill all your coral. As for me, I don't run dKh at 11. I run it at 9, and mag at 1350, and I don't test calcium(in my tank hint to newbies: if you know your alk then you know your calcium). The regular red sea allows me to add exactly what I need to match my existing water parameters, whether it be 8.8, 8.9, 9 or 9.1. Some people use another brand which leaves a residue. Great salt, terrible shipment packaging (Sent to CS)

I'm a carryover from the Marine Depot merger and decided to use a coupon MD sent to test things out. Decent enough price for Red Sea blue bucket, so I ordered a 55gal bucket to see how shipping went with BRS. It arrived in a thin cardboard box padded with a single half-inch piece of styro. Bucket was shattered and 1/4 to 1/3 of the salt was spilled, the rest starting to clump due to humidity. I sent pictures, pointed out the bad packaging, they reshipped. Fast forward to today. Same thing. Poor packaging, bucket cracked open, salt everywhere. I'm not even going to both with another reshipment. Not sure how they can be so bad at shipping such a common commodity. If every other retailer can get it right, so can BRS. Maybe I got lucky as a customer of MD but I never ... MoreI'm a carryover from the Marine Depot merger and decided to use a coupon MD sent to test things out. Recently switched from RS Pro to this to help lower my fresh SW dKH. Very happy I did. The salt produces exactly what is on the label each and every time I make a batch. This is not always true of other brand salt mixes as many reefers will attest to. I even ICP tested fresh batches twice and the parameters where nearly perfect each time. This was from two different buckets months apart. Years ago the trend was to keep your Alk in the 11-12 range and that is what I did with small amounts of success. Made the transition to the blue bucket and immediately saw improvements in SPS and LPS growth and polyp extension. This product allows for a much more reliable approach to 2-part dosing as well, with much more room to make adjustments in just Alk if that is what your ... MoreRecently switched from RS Pro to this to help lower my fresh SW dKH. Poor packaging and shipment handling
1 July 2018

I bought this because it has great reviews and I'm sure it will give my reef tank all the nutrients it needs once I mix it and put it in the tank. However the handling and packaging it comes in is not the best. One of the canisters has a big crack all the way down the side. It doesn't look like the bag inside ripped or that that salt has been contaminated. But it could have easily been punctured and I would have been left with a ox full of contaminated salt. BRS please find a way to package these containers better so that this doesn't happen.
