This drum head will bring a drastic improvement in the sound of your drums. I replaced my stock head which came with my Mapex kit and the difference in sound was quite good.If you like a good, powerful sound which has some overtones like drummers used in 70's and 80's then these heads are the best choice if you have a tight budget.Use Remo's O rings or even a normal duct tape and you can dampen the sound if you prefer it that way.

I have an an older Tama Granstar (Birch) with re-cut shell depths and bearing edges. I put an entire set of these on the batter side: 10,12,14,16,18 and Ambassador coated for resos. I was looking for tunability and warmth + attack without that Pinstripe feel or sound. Also, I just tried Evans EC's and was not impressed. I had been using Evans for the past 8 years and will never go back. I ordered vintage Emperors and my order got messed up. I decided to try the V/A's and will never go back to anything else!! Don't worry, they have plenty of resonance but a bit more focused than a standard Ambassador...just sweeeeeter!!! I might be cautious on an 8" shell if you like an open sound. My 10" was a little more focused then the rest but not too much. I used just a little bit of added control for my 18" and nothing on any of the rest of the toms. These heads have a built in sweet spot for every size and additional tone control is just not needed. AWESOME, you will NOT be disappointed. i would LOVE to hear these on a maple kit!

Well, I had high hopes for the Vintage A, but I just don't really like them that much. I have them on snare and toms. They're decent, but definitely not the best sounding head I've used. The only drum of mine it sounds really good on is my 14" floor tom. The rest are far too choked and dead sounding. I guess they do sound kinda vintage, but just not resonant enough.They also seemed to wear out pretty quickly compared to emperors.

This head SMOKES the Coated Ambassador on snare. We all know that's a "go-to" for many pros and intermediates alike. This head should be the new standard. I've tried both back to back and the Vintage A has more response, tone, and depth than the regular Coated Ambassador. The CA sounds like cheap paper, while the Vintage A sounds rich and full.At first try I did not like this head because I was used to specialty heads like power dots and dry vents (evans). But after experimenting and throwing a moon gel on, I found that I could tweak this head to my liking, and I got the perfect sound.I've heard these sound monstrous on toms too, but I can't comment there. This head is a beast on snare if you're not afraid to use moon gels and have a minute's worth of patience.
The Ambassador Vintage are just what I was looking for. They strike a lovely middle ground between Ambassador coated and Emperor coated, just as the description indicates. They still have lots of resonance but the overtones are more controlled ( no need for gels ) than a regular Ambassador coated and they have the punch and projection of an Emperor. I've recently used Evans Calftone and Aquarian Modern Vintage and I would choose these Ambassador Vintage heads over both of those, by far. Go get 'em!
Love the Remo vintage line. I prefer a more open resonant drum sound and they have the right response to touch and contol the resonance just enough to suit my needs. As a player of many Different styles I have tried other companies offerings and always end up back with Remo. They are my go to heads. Sam Ash had what I needed at the best price and got it to me fast!

To go back to the Bonham example, what recording has more variables than ?When The Levee Breaks?? The old house, stone floor, stair case, a pair of stereo mics on the second landing and Jimmy Page. Some heads simply don?t have that sound. If you want to hear a Les Paul don?t plug in a Strat. And don?t send a Pinstripe to do a Vintage A?s job.
I have not used this specific head yet but have used Ambassador heads for decades.If you want a deeper, richer tone these heads can do that, with proper tuning, too.MF does not make these, they only sell them. But, MF does have superior customer service.
I have a near mint 1979, 5x14 Supraphonic that I have tried many brands of heads on, single and double ply. I just could not find the right sound, attempted with a wide tuning range. I mean, how can you go wrong with a supraphonic? Then I tried the Vintage A - Holy Cow! This head awakened all the vintage-y goodness! Crisp, responsive from rim to center, heck of a rimshot and the 2 plys are not overbearing, allowing a slight ring that makes it sing. This head is a different animal than the standard ambassador and has a lot to offer, check it out!
Great head for a classic kit. It produces less over tones then most the options out there. It is not a cure all for shells that are not flush. Will work well on older kits that were taken care of.
