Revell - Apollo 11 Saturn V Rocket Model Kit

On 16 July 1969 at 9.32 a.m. the gigantic Saturn V of Cape Canaveral, the most important journey in the history of mankind, was launched. The giant Saturn V consisted of three main stages, was 110 m high and weighed 3,000 tons. It could carry a payload of 50 tons and reached a speed of 11.2 km/second. The 394,000 km journey to the moon lasted 72 hours. After reaching a low Earth orbit, the upper assembly with the Apollo capsule received thrust from the third stage of the launcher to reach flight speed to the Moon. Later, the Apollo assembly detached itself from the rocket, turned and pulled the Lunar Module out of its protective casing. Coupled together in this way, this unit reached the moon and swung into a lunar orbit. After some lunar orbits the lunar module separated with the astronauts N. Armstrong and E. Aldrin on board from the command capsule in which only the astronaut M. Collins remained.

A really complex model albeit les than 200 parts - they're a challenge to put together! It builds a great reminder of the past.

This is certainly an impressive kit & looks good at a glance, but there are a number of issues a buyer should be aware of. 1) The paints included are far from sufficient in terms of range or quantity, and one of them isn't even relevant to the finished model. 2) The paint scheme in the documentation is for AS-501 (Apollo 4) not AS-506 (Apollo 11) 3) There are many details which are inaccurate, of which the most serious are the lack of batting on the first stage engines, the second stage thrust structure and the Apollo spacecraft which is a Block 1 type (again consistent with AS-501) which never flew manned - all the manned Apollo missions used the Block 2 spacecraft. The modelling of the spacecraft launch assembly ("LEM garage") is also unsatisfactory. The modelling of the spacecraft launch assembly ("LEM garage") is also unsatisfactory. I'm being picky here & aftermarket products are available to fix these issues, though purchasing these will almost double the cost. I do like the fact that the box it comes doubles as a storage/transport case for the finished model, and It's certainly a far better model than Revell's 1:144 version of the Saturn V. The Airfix 1:144 version also has some issues (though the current versions do at least have a realistic SLA and a Block II spacecraft) but is better value for money. *In my opinion*. As for the kit itself: This is NOT a kid's toy and won't be built in 2 hours flat! The moulds used for the CSM & LEM (common to the 1:96 Columbia & Eagle model) appear to be quite worn & the parts need quite a lot of work to make a neat model. The construction of the tankage sections of the rocket is unusual & needs great care to get right. And there are a lot of fiddly parts far smaller than you'd expect for a 4 foot high model (especially in the lunar module - which, by the way, does not have moveable landing legs & so must be built in the "folded" configuration if you want to stow it in the rocket).

The two plastic like sheets
11 October 2020

The two plastic like sheets you have to form into a circle to build the rocker body do not fit on the solid parts that make up the rocket body. I have had to modify the hole to make them fix and I am not sure how they will look when I complete the model. Poorly designed and disappointing.
