The good news is that it responds pretty quickly to the temperature changes, and is relatively easy to use, and priced well. The less good is it it's fairly large and kludgy. The main problem is the the lettering display is very small, not backlit, hard to read in a dimly lit room, and there is no way to set fahrenheit as the default temperature reading, one always has to hit a second button to move out of the default Centigrade measurement. Would pay much more for I'm more effective package. if thermapen had a device with the reading screen oriented properly I would not have purchased this one.

very fast reaction time maybe because of the thinner tip on the probe. easy to use. the probe tip always positions just short of centre in the jug; I use 2 different styles of Cafelat jugs plus Espro, Tiamo and 3 different size Motta jugs. works well in all of them. Quick to react to changes but slow to count up or down to large changes but alarm can be set to suit your own style and gear for frothing. really like this. John

Great but beware

Look I might just be dumb.I presumed the top was completely waterproof. It's not. It's certainly splashproof, even can be immersed for a bit of time, but it's not waterproof. My buttons have stopped working and I can't turn it off.I'm buying it again, so let that be a review of how good it is otherwise, but don't be as dumb as me. I just lost another $30.

Great so far, nice loud beeps, simple operation
11 February 2023

After replacing my last supposedly 'decent' thermometer which died, I am finding this one much easier to use. The beeping on it is very loud, even over the steaming of the milk, the display is sharp from any angle and the clip seems to be much better at gripping and staying in place.

Not so good...
7 June 2020

Good things: Dial face nice size and easy to read, jug clip quite adjustable to get it sitting right in the jug.Bad: Temperature sensing is very slow to respond. Having to pull the milk wand out ~6-7C before target temperature in order to get in the right ball park. It is much slower to respond to temp change than any other digital thermometer I had used before. This issue renders alarm function fairly useless as either you are listening to the thing beeping after you have shot past target temp or it is set earlier and you enjoy continuing to work while it sits there beeping at you...Verdict: On balance the bad outweighs the good, I would not recommend or get this product again.

Poor quality -2 in 2 years
17 February 2021

The product concept is great and it worked really well initially. The temperature reading then became highly erratic, although the alarm still worked. Alternative brewing replaced but that replacement stoped working altogether. Started using the old one again but the alarm now only goes off about a minute after I’ve sat down to drink my coffee! Pretty disappointing. Maybe old school analogue is best ...

Poor quality. Two have failed
19 February 2021

Very disappointed. The first one started displacing random temperatures, although the sensor alarm seemed to work. AB replaced. After about a year this one just stopped working. Started using the old one again just so I had something. Sensor alarm now only goes off after I’ve sat down to drink my coffee! Maybe sometimes analogue is best?

Rhino Digital Set Temp Beeping Thermometer
14 July 2023

This will only beep when it reaches a set temperature from a lower temperature and not above, if you are e.g. cooling water for coffee to 90 degrees or water for green tea to 80. Its a bit of a silly design IMHO. I pointed this out to Coffee Hit asking if I could get one that would support both heating and cooling to temperatures, they said they contacted Rhino to find out and I haven't heard anything since.

too slow to steam 6 oz. milk on high end machines, tripping alarm stops showing actual current temperature while milk keeps getting hotter!
11 November 2020

This digital thermometer is too slow to keep up with steaming smaller quantities of milk (180 ml / 6 oz) on high end machines like the La Marzocco Mini resulting in way hotter milk than expected, possibly burnt. Alarm @ 53C, desired @ 60-65C, final actual @ 75C. The cheaper analog thermometers are even faster. Moving it from 16C to 46C water took 8-9 seconds to get within 3 degrees of accuracy. The alarm temperature is very misleading and the worst part about this product. After setting the alarm temp. somewhere below your desired temp. and you start steaming, once the milk gets just above the alarm temp. and the thermometer starts beeping, it freezes the current display at this temperature and repeatedly flashes this number. This is redundant but what's worse is it ... MoreThis digital thermometer is too slow to keep up with steaming smaller quantities of milk (180 ml / 6 oz) on high end machines like the La Marzocco Mini resulting in way hotter milk than expected, possibly burnt. After setting the alarm temp. somewhere below your desired temp. and you start steaming, once the milk gets just above the alarm temp. and the thermometer starts beeping, it freezes the current display at this temperature and repeatedly flashes this number. This is redundant but what's worse is it stops displaying the actual temperature, which is very misleading. To unfreeze the display to show the current temperature again requires a press of the "set" button (labeled C/F/S), after which the milk is significantly hotter than the frozen number had shown. There is no mention of this "unfreeze" function on the package instructions or the mfr. web site. The single LR44 watch battery in a device that beeps this often will not last long. No idea if it can even remember the Fahrenheit setting either, powering on the thermometer always defaults to Celsius. For $5 more, you're way better off buying one of those popular BBQ thermometers that's 1 degree accurate in 3-4 seconds.
