Big Sensor Compact, Big Winner!

The large display on the back is very bright and very usable in most conditions, through can be a little harder to see fine details in bright, direct sunlight. While the specs are fantastic, what makes makes this camera truly great is the GR heritage and DNA that is so evident in the camera's design and implementation. Just do a web search on Ricoh GR1 and you will instantly see the family resemblance, and with good reason - the original design, control layout and ergonomics were excellent. Successive GR models refined the basic design over the years, up to and including the previous GR Digital IV. The new GR retains all of the best traits and expands on the original theme in meaningful ways. This camera is a shooters dream and is designed to get out of your way and let you concentrate on what's important. Best of all, even with all of the new technology packed in, the GR is still small enough to fit in your pocket! The only word of warning - the GR series sports a highly configurable and customizable user interface. This is the first camera in years that I've had to read the manual for to learn how to set up and use. While getting started will take some work and patience, you will be rewarded with a camera that does exactly what you need it to do.As a point of comparison, I am a Nikon D800 user and love the camera and the results I get from it. I wanted something smaller for family and travel and very seriously considered the Nikon Coolpix A. I really liked pretty much everything about the Coolpix, which is very similar specification wise to the Ricoh, however the gestalt of the Ricoh, combined with the signifigantly lower price swayed me. And I'm very happy it did!

Ricoh GR is really a nice camera because of its light weight, which is convenient for people to carry everyday, and its excellent performance on documenting social life. For four reasons that GR is perfect for documenting: 1. Color: the color is very important because it determines the tone of the image. If you like to record what happened on the street, the color of GR creates will give you feeling of social life, which is boring but interesting. 2. Lens: Ricoh's lens is fixed, and the focal length of it is very suitable for recording social life around us. It can contains a lot of information in an image. So you will not miss any interesting moment that you observe on the street. 4. The length of time to open the camera is extremely short, which means that once you get target on the street, you can open the camera in 0.5sec and shoot the moment. Otherwise, also because of the color, focal length and the aperture, GR it is not ideal to be used by learners who just want to record travel, food, or beautiful flowers. The color is not vivid enough for food or flowers; the focal length and the aperture cannot focus on details of food. For the conclusion, I just want to say that if you interested in recording social/street life, have already known a lot about the camera, and have used camera very proficiently, you should definitely buy a Ricoh GR and you will deeply love it just as I do. If you just want to buy a camera for food, flower, or selfie, don't consider about Ricoh GR because it will let you down.

Great Camera but servicing is inevitable.

Great little camera
9 October 2015

I have had the GR2 for about three weeks now. I will cite the shortcomings first: images are noisy at anything over ISO 1600. Oddly, they seem more noisy than my micro 4/3 Olympus OMD EM1, at the same ISO even though the Olympus has a smaller sensor. Counterbalancing that shortcoming is a very noticeable increase in resolution and detail compared to the EM1. If DXO Optics Pro will ever get around to adding the GR2 files to its list of RAW files, I can deal with the noise effectively, I expect. I find that the files respond well to a good bit of sharpening, but that is a matter of personal taste. I have read many find the low light focusing to be slow, and it is, but not any slower than a lot of compact cameras, I think. The snap focus feature is very handy for street photography. I look forward to using the camera for travel photography.

My favorite camera ever

This may not be the camera for everyone. But I think it is probably the camera for most people. Most of us don't need interchangeable lenses, full frame, or 50 megapixels. Anyway, 99% of the time, I don't need that. What I do need is excellent image quality, straightforward functions, and a few key customizations. Something to take backpacking, or when acting the part of city tourist, or just to document a dinner gathering with old friends. For these purposes, this is the best camera I've ever owned. The sensor is the same size as the one in my D90, and though I can't change lenses out, I usually shot wider frame anyway. For backpacking, this provides comparable image quality, and certainly beats the GF1 I have been taking when packing light. It's even lighter and smaller. When out with friends, the high ISO quality is excellent for darkened restaurants. And I don't have to carry a bag with me: it fits in a pocket (fairly easily) or a small satchel (no problem). For city tourist purposes, it works better than any other compact I've owned. I love the large sensor, snap focus, quick power on, and rugged feel.Overall, I think I like this camera the way I like Macintosh computers. It may not be the best at everything, but it's really, really good, and you don't have to worry about dozens of menus, features, and options to get decent pictures. But with the exact same tool, if you want to worry about the options, you can, and then push it to be superlative.

Outstanding for the right user
22 January 2014

The Ricoh GR is a difficult product to review, and even harder to recommend. For the right user, it is remarkable - I can honestly say it's probably the best camera I've used. I came to the Ricoh from above so to speak, first as a user of semi-pro dSLR's and more recently as a user of Micro Four Thirds (currently the EM5). I didn't buy the GR as a replacement for Micro Four Thirds but rather as something to fill a very specific niche - for a while I've wanted a TRULY POCKETABLE, intuitive body for street and documentary photography that gives away nothing to larger interchangeable systems in terms of IQ. I'd previously bought and sold a Fuji X100 for this purpose, and had seriously looked into the Sony RX1(r), Fuji X100s, Nikon A and Sigma DP1M before settling on ... MoreThe Ricoh GR is a difficult product to review, and even harder to recommend. I'd previously bought and sold a Fuji X100 for this purpose, and had seriously looked into the Sony RX1(r), Fuji X100s, Nikon A and Sigma DP1M before settling on the GR. First, the good: Performance is exceptional. Very fast AF in good light, essentially silent shutter, the oddball Ricoh goodies like snap-focus, and a few things they've borrowed from Pentax (TAv is surprisingly useful for street photography) make this a very efficient camera for documentary style shooting. IQ is stunning. Most people are aware of how good the Sony 16mp sensors are and removing the AA filter only makes them better. Excellent detail resolution, low and high ISO quality and dynamic range, and a clarity that gives noticeable depth to the files. Lens is stunning. Going on from above, the lens is remarkably sharp across the frame at all apertures, and is matched perfectly with the sensor to create images that pop. Lovely bokeh too although you have to work for it. The User Interface is awesome. Ricoh has been evolving the GR UI for about 18 years now, and it shows. It just works, and once you've set it up the way you want it (its very customisable) all shooting functions can be operated with one hand, from your shooting position. Ergonomics are awesome. As above, the time spent fine-tuning the design shows. Very secure in the hand. Build quality is awesome. Metal body gives a solidness, despite the surprisingly light weight, and everything feels tight. The not-so-good. Battery life sucks. I get that this is a by-product of the body-size, but there you have it... Front dial doesn't have the best tactile feel. The only ergonomic negative. After using the EM5 for a while you notice the lack of Image Stabilisation. The 'Other'. This is a fixed, wide-angle prime. It's stupid to list this as a con because it's the whole point of the GR - thats why it exists. But think carefully before buying, if thats not your thing you'll hate it. If it is your thing, you'll love it. End of story: an excellent camera for those with a solid self-awareness of their personal photographic ethos.

Ricoh GR is a DSLR in your pocket
3 August 2021

Every iteration of the GR series has been an advancement on the previous model. But Ive got a bit of a soft spot for the GRii. The imaging engine resolves like black and white film and the camera is good for 300shots+ on one battery. My original one took 30k shots before it was passed on to the next excited generation (still going strong!). If you keep them in a small case, instead of your pockets, they will last for a long time and you shouldnt have sensor dust issues. On a final note, the 28mm lens with snap setting is genius for tight urban spaces, if you want zoom, get up closer to your subject.

So far, so good!

I typically tote around a Nikon pro or semi-pro, and right now (after 1 week of use), my favorite thing about this Ricoh GR is that it is TINY in comparison. I LOVE that it fits in my pocket, and that it is inconspicuous (on the street, in a museum, when dining out, etc.). I also really like it's capacity to take clear photos in low light, without too much color distortion. Things I need to use more before having more of an opinion: 1. I've used the video function, but have only viewed the results in-camera. Need to download, process, and play with the video to know better how good it is. Thus, no idea re audio, yet, either. 2. When zooming in on an image (after taking it; there's no zoom on the camera itself), the images look horribly pixelated. I need to fiddle some with photos on the computer, and see how they do when enlarged. If it turns out that enlargements aren't an option, I will be deeply disappointed. I'm optimistic, since the camera shoots RAW and RAW+, that the pixelation and noise I see in-camera are just that - in-camera only. If the second issue turns out to be a non-issue, this could wind up being my go-to camera for a lot of street and event photography. I am a freelance photojournalist specializing in science and sustainability, and it will be immensely helpful to have an inconspicuous camera that takes great images.

This is a quirky camera with issues. Rico's customer service is the worst.
5 May 2022

Warning do not buy this camera. You are in trouble if you have an issue with it. Ricoh has the worst customer service I have ever experienced.I had the Ricoh GR2 which i liked, even though it was quirky and had a bunch of strange issues. Last summer, I purchased the GR3 thinking they had solved all those issues. unfortunately, I got a defect camera. Within one week, the camera just shut down. I would power it on, and within a minute, it would shut itself off. I was not able to take a single photo after that first week. the camera was never mishandled, dropped, or scratched. I sent in the camera for repair, under warranty, as i missed the 30 day window for return and am still waiting for the repair 7 months later.

When beautiful photos are what matters

I bought mine just before Christmas, and have been using it non-stop since, mainly as a family outings camera. I chose it because I was primarily interested in image quality (i.e. not sports-fast AF, zoom and such). I am happy to report that it's image quality is absolutely amazing, the best I have seen in a digital camera so far, and I have previously owned SLR's and DSLR's by Nikon and Canon. I previously heard of the Ricoh hype, and at first was a bit dismissive, but I ended up giving it a chance by choosing it over the far more expensive Sony Alpha 7, primarily because of its pocketable size: Ricoh GR is about the size of an IPhone but thrice as thick. There is no viewfinder but the screen is best I saw on a camera so far. I was also at first worried about its fixed lens as being too inflexible for my needs, but, again, having given it a chance , I, amazingly, now find the fixed wide-angle lens on this camera not limiting at all: I like the wide-angle yet pin-sharp photos, but also, when focusing on an object up close (my daughter's face, for example), its shallow depth of field creates a most wonderful, very evenly-gradient 'bokeh' blurring of the background I have seen so far. Who knew, but I did my best portraits with this tiny wide-angle wonder. Again, all the photos are absolutely sharp - you just need to take the couple of seconds it requires to properly focus. When it does focus right, I doubt that the latest Leica can do sharper. Another very impressive aspect is the colors. Prior purchasing it, I read that Ricoh is famous for its signature colors which are slightly different from Nikon's or Canon's. Once I bought it, I did play with various settings, until I found my preferences in terms of setting, which is fairly close to natural colors, but with almost imperceptible vibrancy that makes them just so wonderful. My wife complimented this camera as having the ability to make things look just right. This camera is not perfect its AF is a bit slow, and might mean you need to do several takes to attain the absolute sharpness (which is spectacular), and the camera also merits tweaking its exposure compensation when needed so this camera is probably not suitable for a beginner. It does video but records sound only in mono. Its battery charge is depleted very fast, so be sure to pack extra batteries. The best review of it (which actually prompted me to try it out) I saw in a British Photography magazine: - The Best Image Quality in the Smallest Camera for the Least Amount of Money Possible. That sums it all.
