Cuts windnoise, but also cuts the highs

I purchased these twice, used them on PCM-M10 and Rode NT4 over supplied foam. Windblocking performance is very good on M10 but mediocre in NT4, the NT4 diaphragms being overly sensitive to wind and handling noise, blimp is the only way to go.Finally, these furries are expendables. Within a few months of heavy field use, audible performance degradation (hf loss) will occur. This is due to piling, knotting of hair, dust and oil accumulation and hairloss. No amount of combing and washing will restore performance, you need to buy a new one. These cannot match the transparency of blimp, even when new. Some amount of eq may only partially restore it.

This is my second Rode NT4 microphone purchase in a year. I was so impressed with the sound quality and front-to-back isolation that, despite it's size and mass for use on a video camera, I could find no other mic under $5,500 that would equal or surpass the performance and utility of the Rode NT4. The only drawback to this mic is as an on-camera mic, because of the mass and bulk of its largely non-functional cylindrical body. I use my NT4 mics on Sony PMW-EX1 and PMW-EX3 cameras. The cylinder body is too large to fit in the stock mic shockmount. It's also rather heavy and massive. Since the functional part of the mic is the dual capsule head, the body could ideally be smaller and shorter for video use, but Rode probably intended this mic for stage recording, not ... MoreThis is my second Rode NT4 microphone purchase in a year. Since the functional part of the mic is the dual capsule head, the body could ideally be smaller and shorter for video use, but Rode probably intended this mic for stage recording, not camera use. Aside from that nitpick, the mic is superb. It "projects" well, picking up sound from the front as if it were much closer to the camera, while rejecting noise from behind the camera by over 10dB. I was on a hiking trip with rapids and waterfalls and took the NT4, mounted to a Sony EX3 camera, where it performed smoothly. In a shot where I turned my back to the roaring rapids, the sound of the rapids faded to near inaudibility, so I could hear clearly the person in front of the camera that was speaking. I've recorded outdoor jazz bands and had the resulting sound come out sounding like a well produced CD album. I also recorded marching bands, aircraft at a military air show, fireworks and various other events with this mic on this camera, and people are always amazed at the sound quality. The X-Y configuration is similar to binaural recording, producing a wide and discreet stereo image. The NT4 is built solidly and is very heavy and rugged. If you do a lot of 'run & gun' style video work where sound matters a lot, this mic is still the only game in town for stereo recording with good directivity and a wide response. There are other X-Y mics on the market in this price range, but their specs don't even approach the NT4's. I would not hesitate to recommend this mic for a wide variety of applications where separate studio condensers are too much to deal with.

Good mic.

I've gone through many mics over the years. This Rode NT4 is the best instrument mic I have. It maintains a realistic and true sound. Anyway, I'm glad I have it. If there is a down side (and there is) it is the rubber mic clip. It's simply not strong enough to hold the mic when changing the angle. The mic can easily be pulled out by either lifting up or down, or by sliding it through. Anyway, I will replace it. Right now I'm using one of clips from one of my NT3s. In a nut shell, mike great, clip lousy.

Idiot-proof stereo image that is very pleasing. Clean and true recording.
4 May 2015

Only used it a few times so far, but I'm very impressed with the results. I have lots of "nice" mics (a KM184, AKG 414, etc), and this mic is definitely going to make it into the rotation. If you want to record an acoustic instrument with a very nice and true recording (ie you don't want the mic to provide "character"), I recommend this mic. The stereo image is very nice...and idiot-proof, which is always extra nice.

Solid item, no frills.

It does what it's supposed to! -Allows for wonderful sound quality, even in fairly windy conditions. -Doesn't affect sound quality in normal situations, so you never have to take it off. EVER. -Fits snugly. -Doesn't interfere with mic control interface. My only complaint is that it sheds a little bit, but only slightly. Totally unavoidable. :P (Bonus feature- it makes your mic look more professional!) Hehe If you're an amateur film maker, and you have a corresponding Rode microphone, you NEED a Dead Kitten, just get it. You wont regret it!

This mic works well on my acoustic guitars (nylon and steel). This is my first foray into stereo mics and the results are good. The mic is not as sensitive as my large diaphragm mic (Groove Tubes Gt-66). This might affect the nuance of the recorded sounds, but cuts down on unwanted external noise. I Would recommend this mic to recording people, professional or amateur.

The photo does not match what I received. This is also not bad, but it seems to be a new design. It is less fluffy in length and different fur, more short

Third Rode stereo mic
22 March 2017

This is the third Rode stereo mic I have owned. I am a Folklorist and Ethnomusicologist and use these to do on location recording of traditional music. This one sounds as good as the other two. They are consistently good, actually excellent sounding mic's. I use them because they sound great and are versatile.

Useful, but not much
20 August 2016

Wind protection for microphones works best if the mic is suspended in a still air environment, such as a blimp. I bought this to sue with the Rde iXY mic (same physical mics arrangement ad their NT4). With both of these mics (I also own the NT4), it fits over the foamy. But, there os no acoustic decoupling, so the combo of the foamy and furry are barely better than the foam by itself. Though a bare mic would be pretty useless outdoors in any sort of light breeze. So, it is better than nothing, but if you REALLY want to minimize wind noise on your mic, this won't do it, without doing something else to block wind from hitting the furry/foamy covered mic. I barely recommend this.

Works Well. Needs Foam Mic Cover Also
29 October 2015

I bought the Dead Kitten to use with a Zoom H1 recorder mounted to my DSLR rig. When I put the Dead Kitten directly on the Zoom, it was still susceptible to some wind noise. I have the Dead Cat for my Rode NTG-2. I realized that the Dead Cat was meant to go over the foam mic cover. I rigged a foam cover and the Dead Kitten worked great like its big brother. I was able to shoot all day and wind noise was not a problem. Now I am ordering the foam mic cover for the Zoom.
