Since I didn't want to go more expensive route and spend loads of money on Metabones Speedbooster, I went with equally good (if not even sharper glass) Lens Turbo II (Mark II). The only drawback of Lens Turbo is that it does not have electronic communication with camera, so you have to have manual lens in order to control aperture and focus. That's exactly where Rokinon/Samyang comes in. One word, Perfect! Also, people saying this lens is not sharp. That is not true at all, unless they got problems with their camera or got a lemon of a lens. This lens requires patience and proper focusing techniques, using of focus peeking features almost all modern cameras have, and again... it's short telephoto lens, of course you have to have steady hand or use tripod. I have absolutely nothing wrong to say about this lens. God given for portraits, but for all other types of photography as well. I received it today, and quickly took few photos which I'm attaching here. It was well packaged, arrived safely, but I have only one complaint about the delivery... Purolator delivery person left it on my door step, didn't even ring the bell on my door or knocked, didn't even check if anyone's home. And yes, everybody was at home. If I didn't see him coming through my window at the top floor, lens would be sitting out on the street for anybody to take. That has never happened before. I was always required to sign upon receiving it. Not this time. I called Purolator, they said B&H never requested signature, and specified for the package to be simply dropped at the address. With all package stealing lately, that is outrageous that B&H would do that. I love B&H more than any other site, and would order again in a heartbeat... but this makes me little uneasy about ordering something more expensive. They don't even have a proof that I received it, so not good for them either. This needs to change. B&H, are you reading this? Thank you.

This is the third Rokinon UMC lens I own for astrophotography having already purchased the 24mm f1.4 and the 135mm f2 from B&H. Although I cant comment on how they perform for street, landscape or portrait photography, they make excellent lenses for astro work at a friendly price tag. Users used to auto focus will be disappointed as these lenses do not offer AF, but their corner to corner sharpness along with very low coma make them almost perfect on unforgiving star images. Stop them down at least one stop and they really shine as is typical of any lens with this wide an aperture.B&H has always excelled as my go to source for everything photographic.

This lens is absolutely awesome! The image quality is top notch, and the build quality like good old vintage lenses. For that price, you just can't find anything better. At f1.4 lowlight is not a problem anymore! Ideal for astrophotography as well. It's my third Rokinon lens, and they've done it again. I don't mind manual focus. Especially when the focus ring is smooth buttery like this.

So hard to find an 85mm prime that goes all the way down to 1.4 for less than a boatload of money. Losing the auto focus and other electronic features is a fair trade off for the money you save here. Hard to hit that thin 1.4 depth of field manually, but when you do it looks phenomenal. Wouldn't recommend it for action shots or any situation where you need to focus fast, but its great for portraits and modeling type stuff, which is what I usually deal with.Only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that the included lens hood is basically useless. It doesn't lock into place at all, and you'll just be worried about it falling off all the time. Don't know why they made such a great lens then made such a useless accessory. I purchased this lens to record HD video on the 5Dmkiii. I am after the easy control of the aperture and this lens does that very well. As an enthusiast I couldn't help but test it at extremes and I noticed under high contrast lighting, i.e. back lit by the sun, subjects have an unnatural color halo aka, chroma. Specifically I did some test shots on my dog inside the house lit by the sunshine through the sliding glass door. I did the tests in Raw with a 60D (APS-C) and the shots were impossible to correct with the simple tools in aperture. See the image attached, the right side of the dog's face (left side of photo) show chroma in his whiskers and reflection of the doorway in his eye. I usually shoot in low light with multi colored lights so I don't believe the lens poses a bottle neck in terms of quality for any of my work. I also plan to use this on a 'B' camera in a fixed position so focusing is only an issue to set the shot. Build quality isn't a big factor to me as I plan on using it in very controlled environments; suffice to say it's hefty, metal and glass. Regarding it's integrity I'm not positive because I'm not going to try it myself (at least not on purpose) but it feels like if you dropped it from waist high on carpet it'd survive intact, on concrete you may have difficulty mounting it or mounting a filter on it depending on how it lands because the metal is sure to bend under the weight of all the glass. I gave the lens three stars considering the image quality is not impressive. For those reading this who are heavily considering this because of value I don't think it represents a unique value - a used Canon 85mm f1.8 will yield better results & similar bokeh for about the same $ (I know because I actually tried it - I returned the canon). So unless you really want the marginal benefit of f1.4 and ease of manual aperture ring consider the Canon first.

I love that about this lens. The other thing I like about it is low price! Its hard to believe you can get a high quality fast lens that process great images at such a low price. If you don't mind manual focus, this is a lens worth looking at. I'd recommend this lens to anyone who loves photography and who likes to keep costs low. This is a great but. Manual focus is why it's not in the huge price range.. On a Nikon the conformation light is useless even with the chip until you do some focus fine tuning. If you have a Nikon body that doesn't give you this potion you're on your own, even when i was dead sure it was in focus on my D2Xs pro body, it was a disappointment. I have two of these and both were off on my D700. at f1.4 it's less than the thickness of a your middle finger and it has a dreamy look so don't buy the tack sharp that others say. In bright light it's awful at 1.4 with lots of CA. Stop it down to 2.8 and things start to pull together stop it down to 4 to 5.6 and life is good. I will comment on the 7D-II results since a cropped sensor should hide some of a lens' imperfections.The test: using LiveView, I centered a moderately bright star and used 10X for focusing. I took a center photo, then adjusted such that I could take photos of the same star in each corner of the FoV.The results: I used FastRawViewer to inspect the photos. The center star photo was fairly sharp and the star was round. The corner star photos had significant distortion of the star. For all photos, all ... I did eventually find a manual method in DxO (with maximum adjustment) that could remove the CA on the bright stars. However, the edge aberrations remained an issue. I searched the Internet for some sort of Lens Correction Profile (LCP) for the lens. A Samyang website did have LCPs for the lens and a few Canon and Nikon cameras, but not the 7D-II. I tried the Canon LCPs in Iridient (where you can manually load a LCP) but there was not enough data in the LCPs to activate most of the aberration options. So I gave up and returned the lens to BHP. As with any Samyang/Rokinon lens, your luck may vary. I will probably try another copy of the lens next year, but only after I have done a lot more research in dealing with the various aberrations. Good luck with yours. And make sure you thoroughly test your copy within the BHP 30-day return limit.
