Awkward fit for barrel-shaped body type

Originally I purchased the red Flagline harness in size XS on Amazon for 20 pound Maggie. She is a rescue dog and looks like a Dachshund-Cocker Spaniel mix. The XS fit perfectly in the neck and chest straps, but the belly straps would not go around, since she is barrel-shaped. Next I ordered size S directly from Ruffwear, because I wanted to get the new salmon color. The chest and belly straps of the larger size fit fine, but the neck straps are loose even when tightened as far as they will go. I have considered sewing them, but so far she has worn it loose in the front. It looks a little funny and makes a gap underneath as well— and the loose fabric drags over the grass. The metal hardware from the matching leash also causes a stain over the area of the harness ... MoreOriginally I purchased the red Flagline harness in size XS on Amazon for 20 pound Maggie. They are all made well and the colors are beautiful. The handle is great for getting in and out of the car. But if you have a dog with a barrel-shaped figure and no definable waistline, chances are good that this harness will not be the best fit. I’m thinking about ordering the Hi and Lite version of the harness (without the second set of straps) for Maggie in XS. I suspect that it will be a better fit, though not as secure or handy.

Better fit for longer dogs!

So, with a suggestion from an Instagram friend, I decided to try the Flagline instead. WOW! This harness is AMAZING and fits my boy perfectly. It is lightweight and he doesn't run away from me when he sees me take it out. He walks in it like he isn't wearing anything at all so I know his movement is not impeded. We're really happy with the flagline harness. It fits our border collie really well and is perfect as I ease him into morning jogs with me. The back handle is useful when we spot any major distractions or if I need to pick him up and was the main reason I opted for the flagline harness. I also really appreciated the small loops designed for clipping on lights for early mornings and late evenings. My only suggestion for the flagline harness - and this is not related to Canine Spirit who were incredibly helpful - would be a clip on the front of the harness to attach the lead to. Great for Italian Greyhounds
7 July 2022

A+ quality as I've found all Ruffwear products - great fabric, hardware, construction and design, and this style has been perfect for my Italian Greyhound who's been tricky to harness due to build, having thinner, more sensitive skin, and general wackiness simply not liking many harnesses where he fusses and/or refuses to move while wearing them. This style is lightweight and sturdy so it's supportive but not abrasive or restrictive. There's extra length to the side ropes to accommodate a larger rib cage, and the 2nd set of buckles to prevent easily backing out of it. My little guy (12-ish lb's / 17" rib cage / 9" neck) fits into the XXS perfectly. This has made for a huge positive improvement - making outings easier, reducing stress immensely and allowing for more ... MoreA+ quality as I've found all Ruffwear products - great fabric, hardware, construction and design, and this style has been perfect for my Italian Greyhound who's been tricky to harness due to build, having thinner, more sensitive skin, and general wackiness simply not liking many harnesses where he fusses and/or refuses to move while wearing them. These people know dogs & have thought of everything!- several loop positions for lead attachment - the front chest one is genius!! After 2 or 3 attempts of trying to pull, my AmStaff would just spin around to face me, she soon figured out pulling isn't an option :) Why didn't someone think of this before?- handle on the back (brilliant, much easier to get my dog in and out of the car)- easy to put on (I don't have to wrangle a paw through a hole anymore)- got the matching lead (so good how you can adapt it to go around your waist. I can now walk my dog with two hands spare to drink my coffee!- lightweight & easy to cleanI cannot recommend this product highly enough, you won't regret your purchase.PS: Just one suggestion, the lead could be a bit longer ... MoreThese people know dogs & have thought of everything!- several loop positions for lead attachment - the front chest one is genius!! But I just clip the lead to the very end loop so it gives me a bit more space.

I have just received the package today and immediately put it on the dog to see if it fits, and it does!My dog is a skinny husky/shepherd mix (26kg for a LARGE dog, shoulder is 28 inches?), since he's a skinny, long, tall mutt. His neck is skinny, but somehow has a huge barrel chest (like greyhound deep). It's been really tough to find a harness that will stay tight enough, provide options of front or back clips, accommodate his 'large shoulder/armpit' and also clips over his girth. He measures 20inch at neck and 30inch for girth, we got him a medium and it fits great! Since he is 'not at the max or min' for the Ruffwear sizing, we still have some room to wiggle (if he EVER gains any weight). We haven't taken him out yet, but from the fitting at home it looks good. ... MoreI have just received the package today and immediately put it on the dog to see if it fits, and it does!My dog is a skinny husky/shepherd mix (26kg for a LARGE dog, shoulder is 28 inches?), since he's a skinny, long, tall mutt. His neck is skinny, but somehow has a huge barrel chest (like greyhound deep). New Favorite Harness

This is truthfully the best harness I have ever used! When I first saw the price of it I was a little unsure, but it really is worth every single penny. My dog Mari is a pro at escaping harnesses and it made going on walks extremely stressful because I was constantly having to watch out for signs of her getting loose, but since using this harness she hasn't managed to escape even once! The extra strap around her belly makes it nearly impossible for her to wiggle herself out of it which definitely has reduced my anxiety when we go out for walks!I bought it in the Lichen Green color and I absolutely love how visible it is! Not for us
27 March 2023

I love my Webmaster Ruffwear harness, but the only thing missing from it is a front clip attachment. My dog pulls during walks and I really need a front clip harness. I also need the two separate belly straps, as she is an escape artist. So the Flagline harness looked like the solution. But it didn't work out for us. The second strap is located much closer to the first strap (compared to the webmaster harness) so it doesn't offer the same escape protection. With webmaster, one is under the ribs and one is under the belly. This one, both straps hit at the ribs. This also leads to less comfort when picking the dog up from the handle. With both straps hitting at the ribs, her rear end sags, which makes me worry about to potential harm to her belly or back. She is a beagle mix, and not especially long. Also, the placement of the front clip is too low, in my opinion. This causes my dog to step over the leash and get her feet tangled up all the time. If the front clip were a bit higher, this problem could be lessened of avoided.

Shockingly disappointed!
9 January 2023

There is NO PADDING AT ALL on this harness, the straps are not very wide at only 3/4 inches and the lift handle is in the worst possible place! I can imagine that lifting a forty pound dog with this harness would cause internal abdominal injuries from the pressure of the narrow strap. That would dig right up into the abdomen and bottom ribs. It makes the back strap dig into your dogs abdomen terribly when lifting! The handle is way to small and not very sturdy! The handle should be farther forward! Even just partly lifting a 40 lb dog the harness and handle scrunch up! For $70 and coming from Ruffwear I am shockingly disappointed! Maybe if they made a three strap harness like they do the well padded and sturdy "front range" harness it would be worth the money! Maybe if they made a three strap harness like they do the well padded and sturdy "front range" harness it would be worth the money! This one is NOT!! It's probably fine for a simple city walk but that's about it. I can't use it for its intended use on technical trails. I can barely fit my small tiny female hands into the handle! For what there is, it is crafted well, but It has NO real SUBSTANCE to it! If you are looking for a thin shell of a harness then this is it. If you are looking for a fully functional assist capable and comfortably padded one this is NOT! The photo was deceiving, after having seen the ruffwear front range harness, but I can assure you this harness is two pieces of material sewn together without any padding in between. It would be like wearing a thin nylon belt around your waste to hold your backpack on and hiking with it! Not what I would have expected from Ruffwear!! Might work well for a tiny dog or a city walk or a dog that doesn't really need a harness at all! It does remind me of how a flag is made so it appropriately named!

Jemma is a two year old rescue dog of mixed breed, a very smart bundle of energy weighing 37 lbs. The size medium is perfect for her weight and physical proportions. The Flagline harness has two adjustments under the torso and one high on the chest. This three pronged support is better than our previous harness from a different brand, which had two. It makes for a more customizable and comfortable fit. Once the adjustments are dialed in there is no sagging, constriction, or evidence of discomfort with strong pulling. The padded fabric on the underside supports the dog well if necessary to pick her up by the handle just behind the leash clip point.
