Should have bought one of these sooner. We have 3-4 year old adopted mutt, about 40lbs, part pit, aussie, chow. She’s sweet, but highly energetic, intelligent, and just a bit stubborn with a high chase drive and not very socialized. When we first got her I thought I could train her but we end up seeking professional help. She’s now leash trained and does pretty well in most situations but still has her moments. I had been using a slip knot leash to walk her and like I said she does well mostly but that chase drive kicks in hard when she sees squirrels or a dog she doesn’t like the look of and will pull in her leash. Having a harness makes her much easier to control and calm down. It’s easily adjustable, very secure, and appears durable. Will be great for hikes and ... MoreShould have bought one of these sooner. We love this harness. It was recemmended by many other Golden Retriever owners for its quality, the front clip, and the fit (the Y across the chest much better than a straight across the shoulders harness) and we have been thrilled with it ever since it arrived. Our 7 month old (28kg) Golden Puppy has been doing pretty well at not pulling on a normal collar/leash, but was still not quite there. Using this harness with the front clip has helped massively in reducing any stress on the neck, and has helped us refine her walking. We chose the Aurora Teal colour which is absolutely beautiful too. We opted for the L/XL Size and it fits on pretty much its smallest setting so there is room to grow into it too. Getting the harness on and off is easy too - I was worried it would be a challenge having to slip it over Poppy's head, but it is no bother at all!

So, I had been waiting until our pup was close to full grown to invest in this harness, as it's a bit pricier. I really wanted to love this harness SO much and give it the best review, as the quality is fantastic and it's really just an all around durable and beautiful harness!! BUT...... it did not work well for our English Cocker Spaniel Pup. I bought her an XS at our local pet store and we tried it on there to make sure it seemed to fit right, as she is pretty much full grown now. I don't think the XXS would fit her girth properly, so we got the XS, which fits nicely around the chest, but after grooming her puppy fur around the neck, the harness is too loose at its tightest now, and when I use the front hook (which is ideal for training her on the leash), the ... MoreSo, I had been waiting until our pup was close to full grown to invest in this harness, as it's a bit pricier. I don't think the XXS would fit her girth properly, so we got the XS, which fits nicely around the chest, but after grooming her puppy fur around the neck, the harness is too loose at its tightest now, and when I use the front hook (which is ideal for training her on the leash), the harness shifts terribly and has caused really awful matting of her fur under her armpits, to the point where I had to stop using the harness. And now I have to cut off all that matted fur under her armpits. We comb and brush her regularly, but she's also active and we hike and swim and have done lots of activity in this harness. It's such a shame, as the front clip was my favorite way to leash train her and I just love the overall look/style of the harness, but I don't think the XXS is going to fit, as I can barely get the XS over her head at it's tightest and then it's too loose at the neck. All that to say, if you have a floofy spaniel pup who likes to pull, you may want to make sure you can get sizing exact and be sure to check the fur constantly. I'm giving this 3 stars because it is a really well made harness, just did not work out well for our ECS. None of my other harnesses have caused matting like this, even when her puppy floof was at it's longest, so I know it's this harness and using the front loop hook and just the fit not working right for her. Looks great, doesn't fit great. I'm so bummed about it. I really wanted to love this harness. I would recommend it to a pup that does not have long fur.
The context:I own a lot of dog gear for my two dogs. We live in a remote Alaskan village and my dogs follow along on all the adventures. We go boating, bird hunting, hiking, snow shoeing, skijoring, camping, ATV riding, berry picking, and any other category of outdoor exploring we get the chance to do. I have pulling harnesses already (skijoring), lifejackets, and dog backpacks. But, what I needed was some simple, lightweight, bright harnesses for our everyday wanders. I don’t walk the dogs very much on leads (unless we are skijoring) but I need to be able to restrain them in transit, when vehicles drive by, when guns are involved, and when animals are present that shouldn’t be chased. The good:These harness are wonderfully light and don’t restrict my dogs’ ... MoreThe context:I own a lot of dog gear for my two dogs. I love that there is a little bit of “stretchiness” to the girth strap that moves well with the dog when they are running full out. The attachment point on the back is great, but I can’t speak for the front loop since I don’t use it. The material seems like it’ll hold up to our hard use and be easy to clean when it gets gross. The bright color options are great for being able to spot my dogs easily as we explore (and no one can mistake them for wild animals).Wishlist:I would love this lightweight harness to have even just a small handle to make it easier to hold my dogs for brief moments when full leashing isn’t needed. The lightweight buckles have extra holes that tend to get clogged up with snow and it makes it hard to un-buckle once it gets packed in, less holes would be nice.
I purchased this harness maybe about 3 years ago now & it is in perfect condition! The pup goes on daily walks, including hikes, and this harness has held up with no fraying, holes, tears, or detachment of any straps/components. I've never done anything special with it to get it clean - just throw it in the washer with the rest of the doggy things. I'll be buying this exact same harness again for the newer pup now that he's fully grown & look forward to expecting the same longevity behind it! If I did have to change anything about the harness, it would be to make the front loop for leash latching made of metal rather than fabric. This hasn't ever given me troubles, but it'd add some additional security which would be a relief. The new pup is a 60 pound goblin of energy & is also reactive, so I fear that the front latch may rip. We will see! Overall, I've had a great experience otherwise. I give it 4 stars just due to my suggestion of reinforcing that front leash loop. As for sizing, I never had issues with this due to not having ordered online & grabbing one in store instead to try on. She is about 44lbs & set like a heeler/pointer mix. Fits her like a charm! Very adjustable.
My girl is right on the line between xxsmall & xsmall, so I ordered hi & light (xxsmall) and front range (xsmall) with the plan to return whichever didn't work. Ended up keeping both. Pros: Front Range is sturdy. We’re switching over from harnesses that use velcro closures. My girl wasn’t a fan of velcro closures (too tight?). I’m not a fan of velcro since there’s always a fear she’ll find a way to slip out of it. With Front Range, I am no longer worried she’ll find a way to escape from the harness. The reflective trim makes her more visible when we’re out at night. Dark color … hides dirt nicely. Hidden velcro pocket for tags is nice, but only other Ruffwear users will know it’s there. Has a loop on the front for attaching leash (not one we use, but nice to have the option) Has a small loop on top for attaching a light (nice touch) My only request for Ruffwear would be to have the option customize the strap length. Both my girls are right on the line between sizes. I have a hard time finding Ruffwear harnesses locally (no place nearby to try them on for fit) so I end up buying one in each size to see which works better and returning the other(s). Having custom straps that are a little shorter than standard would allow me to order the larger size & adjust down to what works for my girls. Overall - love it! It's a tremendous relief knowing she's happy in her harness AND that the harness won't fail she decides she needs to be free.
I have tried 3 harnesses: this one, Hi & Light, and Webmaster. For every day, the Front Range is perfect, front and top attach points and sturdy enough to somewhat control a puller. The downside to the Front Range? I have had 4 - one frayed at the front attach point. One (I am using) is fraying at a seam on the top. Ruffwear has good customer service and will exchange / give credit for defective products. Those quality issues are what keep me from giving a 5 star.FYI, the Hi & Light is very light and not sturdy for a 40 pound puller. The Webmaster is the bomb but tedious on and off for every day use - if you have an older dog that needs support, the handle is invaluable. I originally purchased for a dog with vestibular disease but like it enough that I got one for my other dog - really good for hiking when you need to pull then out / off of anything. The downside to all Ruffwear harnesses is there is no long option. As sizing is, the harness (and jackets too) are short on my Boykin Spaniel, making the belly strap closer to lower rib cage and therefore too tight -- I made my own extender but am disappointed that RW doesn't provide an extender nor add an inch or so to the belly straps. When I mentioned it, they suggested I go up a size -- my Boykin is 25 pounds. My 45 pound dog wore the next size up. You can draw your own conclusion of things that could possibly go wrong with that fit!
During the pandemic, we were lucky to add a five yr old 86lb Rottweiler to our home. She is a sweetheart that has very broad shoulders and a deep, broad chest. I tried 2 other harnesses at the time, which did not properly fit across her chest. I abandoned them, just to use her collar. If there is an unleashed dog that charges her, she will pull to respond. (Leash your dogs, please). As this puts too much pressure on her neck, I decided to try a harness again. ( yes, I use positive reinforcement, treats and “leave it” commands, which work very well unless a dog is suddenly in her face).Still in pandemic shopping mode, I turned to Amazon to order 2 harnesses. Neither fit. When I first examined it, I didn’t think there was any way it would fit. To my delight, it fits her perfectly. She doesn’t mind wearing it at all. It gives me another anchor to her (I use a double ended leash, with one clip on her collar and the other on the attachment on her back). She walks beautifully with the harness and no pressure on her neck. We are both very happy with her Front Range Harness.
