If you're not familiar with martingale collars like this one they are designed to provide just enough cinch in the neck give your dog a message when he pulls, but not enough to cause discomfort. I like them because you get to set the amount of cinch yourself when you adjust the collar size. The Ruffwear Web Reaction Collar is well suited to communicate with your dog about the pace of the walk. Never end up holding a leash with an empty collar! If your dog can outsmart the average collar I'm talking to you! The beauty of a Margingale collar is it cinches tighter when your dog stops, backs up or tries to slip out of the collar. This style is really perfect for dogs with smaller heads like greyhounds and whippets. See also the Chain Reaction Collar for a Ruffwear martingale style collar.

We rescued a 50 lb mixed breed dog who has a small head but thicker neck. As she loves chasing squirrels, I was worried she would slip out of a standard collar. This design gently tightens without being too constrictive (she stalks more than sprints, so no intense pulling), and the quality is wonderful. We purchased the 14-17" based on her neck size, but the sizing seemed off to me. Her neck measures at 16" but we only have the collar adjusted to a little less than halfway, which isn't an issue for us since she fell right in the middle of the recommended size. I feel like it could be tricky getting the correct size if your dog's neck is close to 2 different sizes. As an added plus, she walks so much better on this collar compared to standard collars and harnesses. ... MoreWe rescued a 50 lb mixed breed dog who has a small head but thicker neck. I also appreciate that there's a separate hook for her tag so we don't have to hook the leash to the same hook as her tag and hear the clinking as we walk.

I ordered two, one for each of my collies. Martingales are essential for dogs with a thick ruff around the neck and a narrow head! These collars fit them comfortably (the measuring guide is accurate) and I really love the fact that there's a buckle so I don't have to slide the collar over their heads. The material is high quality and I'm confident these collars will last a long time.
Great quality of materials as I have come to expect from Ruffwear. My dogs head is narrow, and she can try to go backward when she’s scared, so this martingale collar feels much safer. The martingale part is slightly smaller than I’m used to with other brands, but the adjustable size of the collar makes it a non-issue. I would love to see more colors offered.
We have a very athletic and motivated young bully. The harness we have to get is specifically for bully breeds, and we always have to hip leash her on the way into the park because she is very strong when excited. Going around the block we usually just use her collar, but then it doesn’t provide enough feedback for her to stop pulling. This collar has fixed that issue, as she pays more attention when we go on walks. It cinches to a normal tightness and is loose when she doesn’t pull, so I don’t have to worry about it being too tight or hurting her. It’s just enough to get her to realize that she needs to slow down a bit.
This dog can slip a collar so quick and I bought him a harness. Put it on him in the house and turned around and the harness was on the floor and he just looked at me. Well, that was just two months ago and he is growing so fast, decided would try the collar. The dog shelter said they are the best for "slippers" and they put them on all the dogs. I had another collar on him and he was in the van and was going to try to get out of my control, He twisted that head and I cranked on that collar so he couldn't slip it. I think that is where the Martingale will be my savior. I like it because it is light in weight and hope he will adjust to having it on. I have had Gr Pyrs for years and years and never had a "slipper" and then this stinker comes along. I didn't have the ... MoreThis dog can slip a collar so quick and I bought him a harness. And he keeps growing!!!!!
This collar is just what I needed for my dogs. Both of my dogs know how to slip/back out of a collar, but I don’t like for them to constantly wear a harness (unless we are going on a longer journey). These collars are perfect to hold their tags and be comfortable, but yet provide better security when they need to be leashed going from one place to another. The martangle style also allows me to give “feedback” easier to my dogs than a standard collar. I only wish that they had a bit more size adjustability. My dogs are forever between sizes and more forgiveness would be nice.
So I got this collar after my dog would slip out of the martingale with chain. To be fair, I had stopped using it as the martingale as I wanted to guide him and not subdue him. With the chain martingale collar I found it affected his fur colour where the metal rubbed his fur. With the web martingale, I am able to gently guide him or nudge him when he is not paying attention to our walk. What I love with all Ruffwear web collars is their washability. I washed the old collar that had gotten rather dirty. It washed up super easy with dish soap and warm water and looked great! The martingale with web and clip now just stays on the leash. I unclip the dog as we get back from our walk and the collar remains on the leash. He seems to be quite happy with it. I ordered this because we are looking for a Martingale collar that has a point where it is easy to connect a leash for our puppy. Especially when we need to quickly get him outside for bathroom breaks and we don't have time to get the harness on. I measured his neck and the collar that he came home from the rescue with and they both measured 11 inches. This collar is two inches longer coming in at 13 inches before it gets cinched with the Martingale mechanism (11 inches once cinched). Really wish this would have been made clear when ordering. It is far too big for our puppy. I don't know that we will be keeping it because we don't know how long until he could grow into it.
