Saw several negative and positive reviews on this machine but thought I would take a chance anyway. So far the experience has been positive in my case, helped by our dog who caught a bug and threw up on practically every mat and rug in the house. The machine managed to remove all deposits, stains and smells from every item and did so effectively enough to leave them almost dry. My only complaint would be that; at my advanced years, having to get on my hands and knees to use this handheld tool is hard work (as is getting back up again). Obviously this would be less of a problem for those that are younger/fitter than me. Overall I am very pleased with the performance of the Rug Doctor. Great machine. Powerful suction, leaves carpet only slightly damp. Easy to set up. Water tank has useful water level and detergent level indicators. Waste water tank is easy to remove and easy to empty, no need to unscrew. Useful wheels, carry handle and extending pull along handle. Long cable. Unit is narrow enough to stand it on the stairs. Not sure how effective the motorised scrubbing head is, I preferred to leave it turned off and just use it as a scrubbing brush. Using the machine is not exactly hard work but it isnt easy either. Works brilliant on my 6 month old carpets nylon that had some stains. I went over the spots with the spray, then a few times with the brush and a few times with the suction, and they were gone. I managed to do 3 room carpets about 5' by 4' in under a hour. Because I read the instructions and didnt over spray, they were dry later that day. The machine itself is not too heavy. They only thing is the water containers could do with being flat at the top, so they have somewhere to sit when filling. Pros: Compact and easy to move around. Cleans small areas pretty good.Cons: The brush mechanism doesn’t really make much difference. I found spraying the cleaning solution and scrubbing carpet lightly with a separate bristle brush and then sucking up moisture with the head attachment works best. Also the unit leaks a little dirty water before the waist tank is full. I use a dinner tray under the unit.
I purchased this machine on a whim as I thought I would be spending money to hire a machine and would be rushing around to clean all my carpets and upholstery in a two day hire for £70-£80.The machine is small and compact and great for stairs and cleaning furniture.The first time I used it on a step and was amazed at the amount of dirt that came off within seconds.I would highly recommend this machine - Easy to use, move around, fill with cleaning product and empty out safely.I have now completed one set of stairs and the difference with the Rug Doctor is truly remarkable.Photo shows the clean step on the left, after first use.
Bought this as a reconditioned unit. It arrived looking almost new. Very easy to manage. I was cleaning a section of carpet within 10 minutes after looking at Rug Doctors easy start video on their website. Tried on carpet, upholstery, and a pet stain and all came up looking like new. The oscillating carpet head is a really great idea and sets it apart from the other spot cleaners. The suction is more powerful too.
I have 3 dogs and my house is open plan, the only place I actually have carpets is the staircase. I had a full size cleaner before (vax) which was bulky and hard to store and heavy. I thought I'd try one of these, and all I can say is why I did not buy one sooner. Its fabulous and just right for the job. I also cleaned my mattress, and was surprised that despite using a topper a fair bit of dirt came out. I love it
Pros: It's portable. Handy for smaller areas for a quick clean up. Seems to "dry" area reasonably well. Powerful enough for spot clean and I've used it often while house training a puppy. It's worked fine for me.Cons: The water unit design is poor. The fill area is at the bottom so needs to be upturned. However the top of the water units is an irregular shape so doesn't stand on its own. You need to hold it. It's bulky and with a smooth surface it's tricky handling when filling and adding cleaning solution. The hosepipe for the brush could be a little longer. You need to be crouched on the floor over the carpet/rug as the handle is on the brush itself - so not ideal for everyone.
Pros: I have a new puppy still toilet training. So this is the best thing. Literally plug it in, water in tank and off. Also if you run out of spot cleaning liquid. I have found if u just use hot water in the tank and use a hand carpet cleaner directly on the stain the rug doctor works great too.Cons: Bigger rug doctor spot cleaner liquid bottle. Only a sample bottle and quickly used. Quite difficult to buy only certain places sell the particular one for this cleaner.

The rugdoctors automatic spray nozzle with stiff brush head to agitate the fibres and powerful visible suction all in one movement was a real help but it still took a long time. At the end it left the mattress slightly damp but it dried out completely over a radiator within 3 hours. It would be pretty difficult to have done all that with a wet vac and a spray bottle. The refurbished machine I bought looked brand new and even came with a small sample bottle of Rugdoctor carpet shampoo to make 4 litres which had been opened but barely used. This is a great deal and a useful machine.
