A different approach.

Most machines (that I've experienced) offer maybe 30 non-adjustable modes. You don't know what each programme does, it's just a number to be used for each recipe. This machine has far fewer modes but each is adjustable so you can adapt each basic mode to suit your recipe or your tastes. You have control over most parameters including rise times, the number of rises, the cooking temperature etc. The basic modes work well without adjustment though. The only negative, is that the collapsible blade seldom collapses at the end of the kneading cycle and the resultant hole in the bottom of the loaf is bigger than a non-collapsible blade. I've found the putting a drip of vegetable oil on the mechanism before each bake increases the chances of it collapsing as intended. As with most of Sage products, thinking outside of the box and offering a different approach pays dividends. I own various Sage products (Espresso machines, coffee grinders, kettles etc.) and all of them are the best in class.

I've used bread makers for 20 years, wanted one that was quieter than my Panasonic. The Sage was quieter but disappointed on several fronts. The loaf appearance was not smooth - people laughed at it! The folding beater caused difficulty in removing the loaf, and took a chunk from the bottom. The dispenser only worked once, and failed twice. The recipe book is difficult to read - poor font on coloured paper. The window & light are fun, but I'm not sure how you take any action based on what you see. I've sent it back for a refund, I've moved the Panasonic to a different room where it doesn't disturb me. Relieved to be using my Panasonic again.

Great bread.
29 June 2022

This is my 3rd bread maker and the most expensive I've had.I bought it to replace an old 2 paddle Morphy Richards one which was leaving the paddles in the bread and they were really hard to remove.Saw this had a collapsible paddle so decided to give it a go. So glad I did as it makes the best bread of all my machines and leaves a much smaller/flatter hole. The paddle also stays in the pan which is great. It apparently makes a noise at the point where you can remove the paddle so there's hardly any hole before the last rise but I've never been there to try it.Love the light so you can see without opening it and it also has the option to personalise a programme but I've yet to try this. The reason for the lost star (would be 4½ if I could) is that I had to exchange ... MoreThis is my 3rd bread maker and the most expensive I've had.I bought it to replace an old 2 paddle Morphy Richards one which was leaving the paddles in the bread and they were really hard to remove.Saw this had a collapsible paddle so decided to give it a go. As other reviews I've read have said for the price the build quality isn't quite there. The first one wobbled very slightly which I decided to live with using a card wedge, but then the paddle after only 3 uses started to lose it's coating. In the hope that this was a one off I contacted Harts of Stur about an exchange. They were very speedy to respond and after a couple of questions and sending of pics they arranged an exchange.Fantastic customer service and easy to deal with. Not sure why but the new one made a loud occasional click type noises but the last time I used it nothing so hoping it was just me not pushing the paddle on hard enough (it is a tight fit). All in all really love it and would recommend it and Hart's of Stur

Great but some tiny niggles
17 November 2022

I bought this for my husband for his birthday as he loves Sage products. Great design and very attractive appearance. It produces lovely bread and fascinating to see the process through the little window. However, a couple of little niggles: the collapsible paddle is unsuccessful. I had ready previous reviews with the same complaint. Great idea. Poor execution. Secondly, the recipe book is not great as would prefer some basic recipes too. Otherwise it's fine.

Lovely bread maker - shame about the paddle
4 August 2022

It's a great bread maker - good looking, small footprint on the counter top, produces a fantastic loaf (I've only used the basic loaf settings so far). There's a issue with the collapsible paddle that SAGE has not been able to resolve for me. The paddle is too loose and it collapses all the time. You have to hold it upright when adding the flour mix to the pan when preparing the cold ingredients. As the liquids are at the bottom of the pan, you get great clumps of flour and water sticking to your fingers when trying to hold the paddle in the upright position. If you don't do this, the paddle collapses immediately and does not mix the dough properly.I've raised this issue with Customer Services who were really helpful - but ultimately unable to solve the matter. ... MoreIt's a great bread maker - good looking, small footprint on the counter top, produces a fantastic loaf (I've only used the basic loaf settings so far). I've had a replacement machine and a replacement paddle and neither has made any difference - the paddle still needs to be supported when adding the flour mix into the pan. It's a shame and has rather taken the shine off what is a great bread maker. Hence only 3 stars. Solve this issue SAGE and I'll happily give you top marks!

Im not sure what I have to do - no doubt 15 hours on a baking forum will sort that outThe PositivesIn its favour it does have a light that comes on and a viewing window - not every breadmaker has this. Without these features it would be a no-star review. As for noise - I think you have to assume a breadmaker does'nt have a stealth mode.In closingJohn Lewis refuses to refund without " inspection"- how it would do that over a two hour bake is beyond me and clearly, it. John Lewis I guess would rather build flats these days than actually sell "stuff"

The bread maker to avoid
12 March 2023

I treated myself before Xmas 22 to this splendid looking machine. I had used a smaller bread maker for years with excellent results for the WHOLEMEAL loaf that I eat daily. First disappointment was no paper recipe book, you have to download it online and work from your laptop or in my case smartphone. Second disappointment the only whole meal recipe needs milk powder - not great for a vegetarian. However in desperation I have added the milk powder but the results are the same - a small dense heavy loaf. I am using the largest amount of flour but the loaf barely fills half of the pan. I ve tried pressing dark crust to see if it cooks it a bit more ..sometimes it is not properly cooked at the bottom so goes mouldy quickly..I ve also tried different kinds of yeast. The last time I had a bread machine it was a cheaper one. It was so hard to please that thing. This bread machine however... It's just so simple ... I've only used the basic white recipe and the leek and potato one, they both have been consistently brilliant. They've just worked. No faffing around. I'm very happy to have chosen this bread machine. My only grumble is that it doesn't come with a recipe book. Or even just a print out. Nothing. You have to download it. I live in a rural area with no phone or internet and that was an unnecessary stress. I don't have any way of printing out the book so I'm going to have to write out all the recipes by hand while visiting my friend I guess or else buy my own smartphone... That doesn't seem reasonable. Very disappointed
30 January 2023

I bought this machine to replace a Panasonic which I have had for many years. Made great bread but fancied a more uptodate machine so bought the Sage as I have other products of theirs.I have made at least half a dozen loaves (white and wholemeal) and each one could have doubled as a ‘doorstop’. They all went in the bin as they were inedible.Where am I going wrong? I follow the recipe book which I printed out online exactly. I weigh everything out beforehand and put them into the tin in the order suggested.Yesterday I watched a YouTube Sage video of a chap making a plain white loaf. I got my husband to watch me copy the video exactly and waited 3 hours for a hopeful result.Alas another boulder only fit for the rockery. What am I doing wrong?
