Im a big fan of Salomon products but in this instance i was disappointed. I made the switch from Speedcross to Thundercross specifically for a trip to the Alps convinced by the claim they were developed in the Alps. I found the shoe to be comfortable but the grip and durability of the shoe vs the Speedcross was disappointing. After approx 20miles of trail running / hiking the membrane surrounding the shoe just above the cushioned sole began to detach. This happened at each side of both shoes just back from the toes where the material folds through natural running / walking movement. After the membrane detaches pockets are formed which fill up with dirt and debris. I did not buy the shoes direct from Salomon but fortunately i was able to return them for inspection ... MoreIm a big fan of Salomon products but in this instance i was disappointed. I really am happy with these Thundercross. To me these are the best compromise on comfort and control of any of my Salomen purchases; Wildcross (amazing), Speedcross 4 and Supercross. Really comfy for day to day street use, I use my trail running shoes primarily for dog walking year round. That might not sound challending but I live in Canada and I wear my Salomen in all but the deepest snow. Day to day it's mainly sidewalks, mud and hilly terrain. These appear to have slightly harder wearing "rubber" on the bottom so I'm hoping that they are durable as well. Fit is good with a decent sized footbed ( I have medium wide feet) and they hold on well to my heal. I always purchase a half size up with Salomen and the same was true of this purchase- half size up 10.5 to ... MoreI really am happy with these Thundercross. Comfortable, performant trail running shoes

These are a great option for trail running or hiking. I go for runs in the local foothill trails at least once a week (10-20 mile per outing), and I've put these to the test on four separate occasions. The main thing that stands out is the unconventional "Quicklace" fastening system -- rather than the typical shoelaces on trail shoes, this allows you to pull a thin cord that weaves across the upper to your desired tightness and secure it with the attached clip. It is indeed a quick process; you pull the cord, the shoe tightens around your foot evenly, and you cinch it with the clip. It also allows you to store the dangling cord and clip in two mesh pockets above and below the main cord outlet.Quicklace advantages: (1) it's minimal, very simple, and ... MoreThese are a great option for trail running or hiking. I picked a size 11 (normally 10.5) and it has worked out well, so you might consider sizing up 0.5 for extra room, which can be helpful for foot swelling after a prolonged run.I've only used these for the past month but the durability seems to be good. The lugs on the base provide excellent grip when navigating uphill over rocks. And as far as style, I like the eye-popping pink and "plum kitten" color, it's like a bit of 80s retro.

Great grippy trailrunners for moderate hiking
22 August 2023

To preface, I'm not an experienced runner but more of an experienced hiker. I'm always looking for lighter shoes to tackle the mountains, but casual enough for the bar right after. REI gave me these trail runners to review, but these are my honest thoughts. In terms of fit, I have high arches and wide feet. The Thundercross does not have wide sizes at the time of this review, but the inner tongue was stretchy enough to accommodate my foot bed. If anything, I feel that the Thundercross runs wide, and I would caution people with narrow feet to look elsewhere. The shoes fit a bit bigger than what I expect for normal width shoes, so I would go true to size or even half a size smaller. If anything, I feel that the Thundercross runs wide, and I would caution people with narrow feet to look elsewhere. The shoes fit a bit bigger than what I expect for normal width shoes, so I would go true to size or even half a size smaller. There’s plenty of cushioning and I really like the lacing system where you can tuck the laces into a hidden pouch by the tongue. Going downhill was great, with plenty of room for your big toe to move to prevent black toenails.Durability wise, I think the shoes have decent protection for the toes. There’s adequate support to prevent rolled ankles. There’s plenty of cushioning by the arch and heel so that you don’t feel every jagged rock on your trail. The 5 mm lugs are a bit soft for my taste and I’m not sure how long they will last on the trail. I’ve had similar lugs on my Salomon X Ultra 4s and those eventually got sanded down to 1 – 2 mm after 1.5 years of moderate hiking.Grip is amazing on these trail runners. Smearing is great when scrambling up technical terrain. Hiking downhill feels secure with the contragrip lugs as per Salomon’s brand. It feels better if not more grippier than my X Ultra 4s. It does great on rocks that are slightly muddy without slipping. I would not submerge these shoes into the mud though, I would be confident with 1 – 2 inchs of mud but no more. The heel drop on these trail runners is 4 mm, which is a bit more aggressive compared to my 10 – 12 mm heel drop shoes. Lower heel drop promotes a more “natural” running stride to emphasize midfoot landing, but I personally felt it to be a bit more fatiguing, at least for me. I supinate and I found these shoes a bit challenging for me to get used to. I highly recommend jogging with low drop shoes around the store if your local REI allows you to before committing to it. It’s a different set of muscles and I personally felt it in my glutes and less on my quads. I’m not a runner but this is just my personal observations.Overall, I think these are a great hiking shoe for people with wide feet and normal / high arches. I would not get these if you have narrow feet. I think people with flat feet can get away with these shoes as the sole is fairly thin and you can add some orthotic insoles inside.

Not built for trail running & scrambling
30 September 2024

I needed some new trail runners and gave the thunder cross a chance from my usual altra lone peaks. I chose these mostly due to the lacing system and that has held up great. I took these on a hiking trip to Norway and then on multiple hikes and long distance trail runs in the White Mountains. I have to say these underperformed way below my expectations. The grip of the sole was non existent compared to my lone peaks, the lacing was ok but took a lot of manipulating to get even tension up the shoe. Ended up getting a ton of hot spots and blisters. I think this shoe was built to look aggressive but intended more for nature walks. I would not recommend this shoe on the sole alone, I understand fit is subjective.

Perfect shoe...for me!
25 February 2024

I have found the perfect hiking shoe for me. Perfect weight (not too heavy and not too light). Good deal of cushioning and super arch support. The width is just right. The two things I appreciate most of all is the stability the shoe provides and the 4mm drop. The stability has given me my confidence back since I don't have the balance that I used to have. The heel to toe drop is the exact height my back needs obviously. My previous hiking shoes had 10-12mm drop, and that is just too much for me. I've had zero drop shoes too, but that wasn't it. These are just right! I will only use for hiking and not trail running, but they have excellent grip. I have worn them on roots, leaves, wet rocks, etc., and they do not slip. Salomon nails it

I’ve only worn these a handful of times but I’ve tried a lot of different shoes so consider myself fairly well versed in reviewing them now. The fit is superb on these. So comfortable. Classic Salomon very secure in the mid foot and heel and roomy toe box but not overly so (like topo and altra). I think these have the same classic Salomon fit-they don’t run big. I would say true to size and I am even thinking about .5 size up. The 4mm drop is perfect and feels very natural. Most of my hiking is off trail technical travel. Lots of bushwhacking. My favorite shoes are the x ultra 4 because of how stable, comfortable, and durable they are. My main gripe with them is the mesh is almost too breathable and lets a ton of dirt and sand in. My main gripe with them is the mesh is almost too breathable and lets a ton of dirt and sand in. It looked like the thunder cross had a tighter knit to it and I can confirm (kind of like the speed cross), so it lets less dirt in. They are still fairly breathable but not as much. Another thing I really feel like that sets Salomon apart from other shoes is how the laces tie into the “wings” of the uppers. I find this crucial for steep off camber terrain as it cradles the foot and is very stable. These achieve that very well. Cushioning on these is also very nice. Grip is excellent as well. The tongue allows you to easily tuck in the quick lace (unlike the x ultra 4), and the tongue stays in place. I think Salomon nailed these shoes for their intended purpose. My one gripe is the colors, I don’t like flashy weird colors and wish they would offer one normal earthy tone/black option. Not a big deal.

The shoe I’ve been dreaming about!
3 September 2024

First, this shoe is a 4mm drop which is perfect for me. Secondly, most 4mm drop shoes don’t have enough cushion, this one does. I don’t know what it is about the design, but this shoe makes me feel like running. Some cushioned shoes are clunky and feel slow. This shoe is a runner and I feel fast, well balanced and agile on the trail. Thirdly, I live in western Pennsylvania and our trails are dirt with rocks and roots scattered throughout the trail and plenty of mud when rainy. Since recently getting this shoe, I’ve run 40 miles on these trails, 12 miles was my longest run, and the comfort over the rocks and roots was impressive. I’ve ordered a second pair and a third pair in Goretex. Highly recommend.
