I’m sad to say I will no longer be recommending Salomon boots to my hiking friends… I’ve had a pair of Quests since 2017 that I absolutely adored, but the rubber finally peeled away enough from the uppers to let water in, so it was time to get a new pair. I immediately gravitated towards the same boot, and was shocked at the drop in quality of the materials. It felt flimsy. The sizing was also strange - I’m a size 9 in ALL of my boots, and had to drop to a size 8 for a marginally good fit.I took them for a local hike to check the fit over a small distance, and the boot had hot spots I never had with my old pair (oddly enough, one was across the top of my boot where it bent with each step and rubbed against my toes). The cherry on top came when I hopped down a rocky face and the metal hook eyelet popped right out. This was in no way, shape, or form an aggressive hike. It was basically a walk in the park, and the boots failed spectacularly. Between the bad fit and the boots quite literally falling apart, I returned them the same day and am looking at other brands to suit my needs.I’m disappointed they took an amazing boot that’s lasted me seven years through tough conditions (mud, streams, endless granite and boulders) and replaced it with this nonsense. Clearly churning out an inferior, cheaply made product to maximize profit is the name of their game now, so I’ll be taking my $200+ and buying something that’s actually worth the steep price tag.

I had high hopes for these after absolutely loving my X Ultra GTX mids from 2015 (which PS seem most like the current Edge model, definitely not the same named current model). After a PT stated that I needed a high stability boot for my knee pain, I tried 2 other brands’ models (both fails) and then these. Also a fail, here’s the main reason why: BLISTERS! I wore them on several training/break in hikes before my trip and was okay somehow, but during a 3 day trek in CO I was treated to absolute misery starting day one, with blisters on my heels and toes. Other hikers couldn’t even look at my feet they were so bad. Every step became an act of will. (Yes I wore good socks.) I can’t speak to longevity of these, but I felt that they were generally well fitting and comfortable. Definitely more stable than a sneakery boot. Waterproof… not sure. A late season snow had us up to our knees in the white stuff, so it’s not fair to say a boot’s waterproofing “failed” in that scenario because some moisture is going to get in, and we were in it for hours. A pair of the Edges are the on the way to me, fingers crossed.

I reluctantly had to replace my beloved hiking boots, which have seem many place with me. It took a lot of trying on of boots to find the right fit, and in the end, I decided on two boots, a day hiking boot and these for when I am multi day hiking with my full pack. They are my first pair of Salomon hiking boots, I took them out for a week long trip right out of the box (just the way life went). They were comfortable the whole week, with no binding or blister spots, but most importantly, I didn’t get the foot fatigue I was getting from my worn out boots while had my heavy pack on. They gripped the rocks well going both up and down, no sense of slipping at all. My feet did get warm, but I have yet to find a waterproof hiking boot or shoe that they don’t. Went through some puddles and wet mud and my feet stayed dry, but it was not enough to really test how waterproof they are …but frankly I don’t expect boot to be truly waterproof and just hike in wet feet when I have too. The toe box is roomy, which I like, and I think they fit slightly larger overall, but I was happy with the size 9 I choose, which is my usual size. I can lots of happy hiking ahead!

These boots for exceeded my expectations. I got them for a trip to Iceland and they preformed to perfection. Crossing rocky Glacier rivers they kept my feet dry and comfortable wile providing great grip. Used them bouldering. The ankle support was second to none. I never got cold nor overheated. Perfect for long hikes and risky adventures. These boots got me through loose lava rock pathways up waterfall trails and never once failed to keep me comfortable and protected. Even kept me warm wile sitting over night on a hill watching an eruption. These are by far going to be my go to boots from now on.#Iceland #bouldering #GlacierHike #volcanoHike #RiverCrossing #SuperGrip #WaterProof #DryFeet #AnkleSupport #Adventure #MountainTrail #spelunking #Breathable
I'm an avid hiker, backpacker and I volunteer with search and rescue and I love these boots. I've never had to break these shoes in. The waterproofing is excellent. I've spent hours crawling around damp forests while raining and my toes are dry. And that's even after the leather was scored by blackberry bushes. I love how the lace hooks are designed, I have very high arches and I can keep the laces over my instep loose while keeping my ankles tighter and more stable. Excellent traction. Generally the insoles are better and have better arch support than other boots, but because mine are so high I buy new insoles. Finally, nice roomy toe bed, never had an issue with my toes bumping when going downhill. Will absolutely buy again when I wear these ones out.
Unfortunately, Salomon really divested themselves from this boot. In last four years, the quality of each new version was going one more step down. Salomon is trying to shave off on every inch of quality where they can save money. First, the sole, if you really put miles into hiking it wears off just in one year and loose traction. Waterproofing is ok for couple of hours, but padding is gone and shoe falls apart after being exposed to extreme elements. This last season even shoe laces are some weird material that feels like paper and does not hold the knot. But what really was a last drop for me this year (Ladies be aware) they no longer use true women's soles versions for boots. They use men's template and just size them down for women's. As a result, the same size that was perfect for me for last 10 years now a half size larger and very roomy to the point of being unusable. I was going through 1 or 2 pairs per year due to my work, and now I just have to say good bye to Salomon :(
These boots are a dream up to mile 3; at mile 5 I'm starting to get sore and I'm in agony by mile 10. I bought these in my shoe size 10. I usually size up a half size for hiking boots because I like to wear thick socks, but the reviews said that these boots run large, so I chose my usual shoe size. They seemed to fit perfectly with my thick hiking socks - my feet weren't jammed up against the end but also weren't sliding around. I did a couple of short hikes in them to test them and had no trouble.I've put about 50 miles on these boots and I tend to forget how painful they can be after a single hike, but after this week of hiking I've thrown in the towel. Maybe my feet are the issue since these boots seem to get good reviews, though I've never had the same ... MoreThese boots are a dream up to mile 3; at mile 5 I'm starting to get sore and I'm in agony by mile 10. Maybe my feet are the issue since these boots seem to get good reviews, though I've never had the same problems with other hiking boots. After only about 5 miles of hiking, both of my feet start to get uncomfortable. On recent ~15 mile hikes, my feet have become straight up painful, especially on descents. My right foot gets the worst of it - my "index" toenail gets blackened from bruising and is malformed now, and about an inch above my right ankle, my right leg gets terribly bruised from the boot digging into the leg. I have slim legs so I don't know why the boot digs into them. I've tried loosening the laces in that area, but no matter what I do, I can't avoid the pain and bruising there. The left foot fares a bit better - the middle toe gets bruised, but there's no other bruising and that foot doesn't get quite as sore as the right foot. Also, sometimes one of the loops created by tying my right boot will hook into an eyelet on my left boot and trip me up. This doesn't happen all the time, but it has happened.I've never had these problems before with other hiking boots so I think I'll find another brand. It's a shame because they're obviously tough boots and have proven to be quite waterproof, and the soles are thick enough that I don't have to feel the edge of every rock or root under my feet. But I can't put up with the foot pain these boots cause, especially when I'm out hiking for several days at a time.
I'm not sure what's going on at Salomon but apparently they've adopted the "if it ain't broke, fix it til it is" mentality. I've owned 2 different pairs of these boots over the last 10+ years and always relied on them as my go-to outdoor footwear. This would have been my 3rd pair, but unfortunately no.This updated model has proven unwearable. The first pair I ordered blistered my right heel in short order so I returned them. Hoping it was an anomaly I ordered another pair. The 2nd pair was OK in the heel but dug into the top of my foot at the flex point causing pain with every step. Significant efforts at break-in did nothing to alleviate the pain & discomfort. The boots are unwearable. Very disappointing.I noticed my old pair was made in Vietnam, the new pair made in Cambodia so maybe the change in manufacturing played a part. The toe box construction is different on the new model which seems to have stiffened the flex point. Whatever it is, it was a mistake. Don't waste your money on these boots, find something else. Or maybe by mine at your local St. Vinny's. That's where they're headed.
I wore these for 3 months, walking around 2 hours a day through boggy fields, over & down hills and across streams. The only positive point is that they are waterproof and warm.Within a week the hard metal lace hoops on the side of the ankle began pushing in to my ankles and were extremely painful, but I was able to tolerate it by not lacing those loops.Walking in them also became painful after a month. And that's just what they'll do. I've had these for about 1.5 years and the longest trek I've worn them on was a 16 mile overnight backpacking trip in early June last year.Due to a miscalculation, we did six miles of the first day and 10 miles on the second day. On that second day around mile 8, my ankles were hurting pretty bad. I haven't worn them on a backpacking trip that long since and they might be more broken in now.
