These are my first Salomon boots. I've always found Salomon to be too narrow for me but not these. I've owned just about every brand on the shelves but had yet to find the perfect shoes for me for hiking. I bought these trained in them for an Iceland hike. I just finished a 9 day back-to-back hike of the Hellismannaleid, Laugavgur and Skogar -Fimmvorduhals Trails. These boots spent that time hiking tough rocky, snowy, pumice, wet, scree and moss. Absolutely comfortable at all times, light weight and water proof. I get the whole no-Gore-Tex argument but in Iceland and the Pacific Northwest where I live it does make sense. I was really excited when these first came out, upgrading from previous gen Salomon boots and shoes. Felt great out of the box and wrapped my (skinny) foot nicely after a very short break in period. The sole of the boot is very soft for a hiking boot as well as the tread which can be good for traction but you can feel the pressure of medium sized rocks. After about 4 months, walking on various surfaces the tread was worn flat on both balls of the foot (and no, I'm not shuffling my feet along the ground like a cross country skier). I bought these for some hardcore technical terrain hiking in Norway. I’m talking steep cliffs, slippery rocky surfaces through glacier streams, loose gravel trails, wet moss covered muddy forest climbs with roots - you name it. I knew i needed something more than my usual trail runners so following the rave reviews i picked this model.First of all the shoes are NOT comfortable like all the reviews say it, yet this was one of the primary reason i bought these. The discomfort continued on the second 4 hour hike that consisted mostly climbing steep rocky stairs as ankle support tend to push against my ankle bones. Interestingly it did not cause blisters just printed bruises that recovered quickly as my feet remained fixed in position so that is something at least. Also pleasantly surprised my toes remained comfy all this time and never once were squeezed against the front of the shoe nor i was hurt by bumping into rocks as the toe protection is pretty solid. Adding to discomfort though the cushioning on the sole is not very thick, i felt most of the cracks, rocks and other objects i was stepping on which some people may prefer but i don’t, especially after reading about some of the HOKA hiking shoes that i was also considering.And now onto the positives: the shoes are performing incredibly well on any surface. The grip is insane. I was able to conquer surfaces i never thought the shoe can handle and kept pushing up on crazy slopes. I only slipped once on a wet rock downhill but even then the heels caught a grip after a momentary lapse. And i know that it is the shoe’s merit as i saw my hiking buddy struggle big time with his Columbia peakfreak boots on surfaces i could easily navigate with the Ultra GTX. Water resistance was equally impressive, hiking through streams, puddles and in the rain the Ultra never once failed to keep my feet completely dry and ventillated at the same time.All in all i was satisfied with them, but just know what you are buying into. These are very capable footwear for even the most extreme terrain but don’t believe the reviews that rave about comfort - if that is your preference, look elsewhere.

I got this shoe in my true size and it seemed to fit well upon trying on. I was super excited to get my hands on a pair, but the poor quality of the hiking shoes made me regret the purchase even after the discount.Long story short, the lace loop on the right shoe ripped out of the shoe as I was tightening my laces in the middle of an 8 mile hike up a mountain. I was not using an abnormal amount of force compared to how you would normally give laces a tug to tighten them. Finally, after jerry-rigging a new lace hole, I was able to somewhat fully lace up the shoes so I could make it back to my car. Imagine if I was backpacking several days of walking from civilization? (Something I did this summer wearing a different brand, fortunately.) A flaw like this is no joke- this could seriously strand someone with no proper footwear.I’ve attached the picture of the left vs right shoes to back up my story. Again, this happened on only the third hike these shoes were taken on, and is a major defect on a $175 product. I was crushed after hearing how great this brand was and couldn’t believe it. To make matters worse, they were ineligible for a refund since I bought them “used” (tried on). I took what I thought was a minimal risk on a known brand and my trust with Salomon is justifiably damaged.I made the mistake of throwing out these shoes while moving last month- they were faulty and hurt my feet, so of course I would. I was unaware of their warranty and figured I was out of luck- and I doubt they would honor it for shoes I bought barely used through REI based on how they responded. However, I was still frustrated by the experience as of a few days ago and decided to contact customer support. I sent the same details I did above and was deeply disappointed by their response. They took several days to respond, and when they did it was a generic message requesting more pictures of the shoes to see if I qualified for their “warranty.” They clearly did not take the time to read my message and handle the situation with the severity it requires. Frankly, I didn't want the shoes to be fixed based on how low quality they are to begin with, I want Salomon to do right by the pain this put me through and at the least send a different model of shoe if they actually have higher-quality products. However, since I got rid of their faulty product and only took pictures of the damaged area from one angle, which should be plenty of proof to back up my story, there is apparently nothing I can do.I am looking elsewhere for my next pair of hiking shoes and I feel obligated to warn others about the risk you face when depending on these shoes.

After I cleaned the boots I found 4 spots where the stitching had failed, and it looked to be fraying in many other spots.This may be a nice boot for the casual hiker, and I have to say they look great even with "normal" clothes on. Anyone looking for a durable reliable boot that you will really put through its paces should find something else unfortunately.HUGE shout out to REI by standing by their return/exchange policy! I'm trying a pair of Keen's now, hopefully I'll have better results.
I've used Merrill, Oboz and Keen in the past. I have wide feet with incipient bunions so the wider toebox on Oboz and Keen is great. However their soles wear out way to fast! With Merrill it's the opposite, I found that the uppers wear out first (they use Vibram soles, much better). Also Merrill's have a "normal" width, so a little on the narrow side for me. These Salomon's are definitely snug, but are slowly loosening up - I prefer to buy on the snug side as boots always loosen after a few hikes, and I really don't like my feet floating around in the boot. These are very comfortable and pass my main test - that they "disappear" while hiking, ie I forget about them and just enjoy the hike! The forefoot and lace construction allows you to adjust how tight the boots are on your foot very well, so you can have them a bit loose on level ground or uphill, but tighten them for downhills to keep you toes from hitting the end. I've only had them a short while so no comment on their durability yet! Here in AZ if you hike regularly, boots do well if you get 2 years out of them.

Living in the Pacific Northwest requires special gear to keep you dry and warm here. With some of the most rain in the nation you have do be prepared. These boots leaked After the 1st use on a 10 plus mile walk in the city. They were not submerged just medium to heavy rainfall. After returning with a wet foot, just one wet foot, I realized they need to be returned. Unacceptable. It's not a HUGE increase, but I felt that it was just enough, at least for my feet. Pairing these with a high-quality hiking sock, preferably lightweight (i.e. Darn Tough), is definitely a winning combination in my book and I highly recommend the same to anyone else shopping for these boots. After wearing these on several longer-distance hikes through the Adirondacks, I've yet to run into any rubbing, pain, or blisters.
