What does women-specific really mean? For us, it’s shoe that is fully adapted to the morphology of your feet: a softer cuff, cradling anatomical design and lower density ADV-C Chassis for greater stability. In this mid-cut GORE-TEX version of the X-ULTRA 4, all this is backed up by waterproof protection and a grippy outsole that powers through uphills and descents, so you can explore every angle of your freedom. Improved stability The new ADV-C Chassis targets articulations on the outer foot to optimize stability without limiting your mobility, while the higher cut provides extra ankle support. All-terrain grip The Contagrip MA outsole grabs the terrain, even when it’s wet or slippery, giving you more control especially on descents. Women-specific With softer materials, especially around the collar and heel, a lower-density chassis and bigger last, this shoe is designed for women’s feet.

Comfortable But Not Waterproof

I have been wearing Salomon X Ultras for years and am a huge fan. As has been the case with earlier versions, the X Ultra 4s fit like a dream, were comfortable, and needed no break-in period. I just finished the approximately 200 mile England Coast to Coast hike and suffered no discomfort, hot spots, or blisters. However, the waterproofing failed when I encountered muddy and wet trails and fields about half way through the hike. I was wearing both rain pants and gaiters so water was not wicking in from elsewhere. I have read that the Gore Tex membrane in boots can be compromised as boots flex, and since I felt my socks getting wet just where these boots flex, at the mesh part of the uppers, assume this is what happened with the Ultras. I have been travelling South America for 8 months now and have completed over 70 hikes/treks with these boots.Good points - they're extremely comfortable and require minimal breaking in (if any). The grip with the sole is very good and the flexibility in the boot allows me to hop around mountains easily.Bad points - the manufacturing is terrible. After just 3 months of wear, the seams were compromised by the creasing in the toe of the boot. Eventually this meant that the stitching came undone and holes formed on each side of the crease, meaning they were no longer waterproof. I received a new pair as compensation and noticed immediately the stitching on the upper inside was already coming apart before I'd even worn them. I'll update with progress.Overall - I'd recommend these for light hiking use (i.e. if you only go on a few gentle hikes a year) or if you want a pair of waterproof dog walking boots. I wouldn't recommend these for regular mountain use. They simply don't hold up to the strain like other sturdier boots as the integrity of the boot has been compromised for flexibility.

Given my purchases require I spend an extra $90.00+ in order to wear them due to a limb length discrepancy it is important that1) The footweat will last a very long time/worth both upfront and modification cost, and2) The footwear be comfortableWhen I tried them on and walked around after deliberating between several pairs they felt quite comfortable, had great grip, enough flexibility, appeared durable etc- everything I was looking for. So, I was quite miffed to discover upon my 3rd time wearing & hiking in them (just 1.8 mi) that I was experiencing quite a bit of arch pain & I don't usually have that issue. To my dearest boots, a love story. You are indestructible. You are actually waterproof and have handled all my splashing about perfectly...unless submerged (duh)...I've fallen in creeks wearing you a couple of times. You got soaked but only because water got in through the top where you are obviously not waterproof. You dried out so nicely! Your soles are very grippy and provide a lot of stability. I would fall in many more creeks if you were not so sturdy. I notice how much your grippy soles help me get up steep sections of trail or around tree roots and rocks on my way down to the creeks we fall in together. Remember when I wore you at a very muddy event where I subjected you to being caked in inches of soggy mud for 3 days? Remember when I wore you at a very muddy event where I subjected you to being caked in inches of soggy mud for 3 days? You stayed dry on the inside the whole time. This is really where my love for you became unbreakable. Another time I actually anticipated slugging through water with you and wanted to know how much you could handle before we were stuck outside of your capacity in the wild so I submerged the lower half in a sink full of water to see how long it took for water to get inside. Roughly a couple minutes and still then, only damp. You also clean off well. After the muddy event, I put you under the bath tub faucet and ran water inside and out to clean you. And again, you dried well and looked like you had only been through normal wear even though you survived an apocalypse. However, not everyone is perfect and my darling, X Ultra 4 Mid GORE-TEX boots, that unfortunately includes you. Your laces loosen over the course of a hike and I wish they would stay tight. You are warm which can sometimes be too warm during a summer hike so sometimes I use foot powder/baby powder in my socks. But it makes you really nice for cold camping.I cannot wait for our future endeavors. All my love,M

MANUFACTURE DEFECT LEADS TO SEVERE INJURIES
5 February 2024

For years I used the various versions of this brand of shoe, but after SUFFERING INJURIES DUE SPECIFICALLY TO THIS SHOE - I just have to warn off buyers until Salomon can fix their manufacturing defects.I tired 2 different pairs of this same shoe. The first pair had a defect in where the hook is installed at the top of the ankle. After wearing them around the house for 5mins, I was already in pain. The inside garment where the lace hook is attached is pressing through the fabric on the inside, rubbing against your skin. I immediately returned them.Because I loved the brand so much, I tried another pair. The first hike did well after touring Chiricahua. We did 8-10mi broken in segments with car rides in between. I immediately returned them.Because I loved the brand so much, I tried another pair. The first hike did well after touring Chiricahua. We did 8-10mi broken in segments with car rides in between. So I thought they were good- but I was very sorely mistaken. The next hike I took them on was Manning Camp in the Rincon Mountains, AZ. It’s about 28.3mi with 6,125ft in elevation. The shoes did okay until about 8mi in when I could feel pain at the top of my right toe from the fabric smashing it. Since I was going uphill the entire time (tough trail) it just kept smashing my toe. The pain was so bad I unconsciously adjusted my gait and about 1 mi from the top my left knee nearly gave out from the extra strain. I stretched, breathed through the pain in both my toe and knee (note, I have hiked the Grand Canyon from rim to rim to rim, and I have never had any pain) and made it to the top. Downhill for the 14mi wasn’t any better with my toe being the most immense amount of pain I had. When I got home I saw the damage, still have the pic. It’s been 5 weeks and while my toe has healed, I’m still in physical therapy for my knee from the change in gait. It’s amazing how much damage a bad pair of shoes can do to our bodies. So , please think, think and think some more if you want to get this brand. I truly hope the company goes back to being the quality pair of shoes they were before- but even then I’d be scared to risk my body to this company.

I bought an exact pair of the same boot, different color, last year for a hiking trip and I LOVED it. No breaking in required. In fact, I loved it so much I wore it every chance I got when I got back. It’s as good as my Brooks running shoes but in hiking shoes. I was basically an unpaid spokesperson to anyone that would listen. Naturally, I bought another pair for my 2 week trip to Iceland. In an idiot move, these are the only pair I brought with me and they are 100% defective. It started as I was sitting in the plane so there was no injury to blame it on. I pushed through for 13 days, grimacing every day, but as my trip nears an end I am walking with a noticeable limp. I put my hand in it and you can feel where there is something poking in and rough there. I had others check and their feet are narrow, their response was “ouch” so it’s not specific to me. I don’t know why the one boot is a lowest of lowest rating while the left boot and my other pair are the most amazing thing.

The perfect boot

My old, trusty leather boots finally retired a couple of years ago and I had real difficulty finding an adequate replacement (in the space of a year I went through three different pairs of boots from three different brands - and none were up to the job).A year ago I bought a pair of X Ultra Trek GTX boots and they have been fantastic. They are incredibly comfortable and offer the support needed for long Alpine hikes. I used them for snow-shoeing all last winter and they were fantastic - once you've added the weight of the snow shoes a heavy boot can make it hard work, but the X Ultra's are so light that I was able to be out all day.My only quibble with the boots is that like all Salomon footwear the soles are not very long lasting (I burn my way through 2 pairs ... MoreMy old, trusty leather boots finally retired a couple of years ago and I had real difficulty finding an adequate replacement (in the space of a year I went through three different pairs of boots from three different brands - and none were up to the job).A year ago I bought a pair of X Ultra Trek GTX boots and they have been fantastic. Wonderful hikers
28 January 2024

I searched several stores and tried many brands to find a trail/hiking boot that worked for me. Wanted somewhat lightweight with great tread for both ice and light snow on trails with my dog. Needed to fit a orthotic insole as well. Nothing quite met my expectations and as I have the Solomon speedcross shoes and love them I wanted to try the X-ultra. Could not find them in any local stores in smaller women’s sizes so tried online with Altitude. To sum it up, I love them. They are comfortable, lightweight, great treads. I would have preferred a different color but the mocha one is good. Got my usual size and these fit well with hiking socks.

I’m amazed that I could return them to REI for a full refund after nearly two months of trialing. Great to be a member of REI if only for this benefit alone. It is always tough to know if a shoe will work without a field real world hikes and that’s what I did.
