I bought a pair of these boots late last year and within a few weeks they were leaking at the toe crease. However, the customer service department were fine about sending a voucher for a replacement pair. So, I was forced to buy another pair of Salomons and went for the same boots in half a size smaller. Having previously worn a pair of wide speed cross and seeking advice and trying shoes on in my local shop, I have found Salomon’s usual width too narrow so went for the wide fitting. The wide fitting, plus the placement of the reinforcements, means that there is a substantial crease at the bend point resulting in bruising on the top of both of my big toes. I was prepared to overlook the lightness of the colour (they looked rubbish after one walk on the North Yorkshire Moors) but they have been an expensive mistake. I’ve been a huge fan of Salomon’s different kinds of hiking shoes for over a decade- and never before been as confused as I’m now. I find Ultra 4 Mid Gtx an overall fine Salomon- shoe but after three different kind of hikes I’m troubled if the quality of the shoes is just bad or if only my shoes lack it-After first trip on the mountains I noticed the seam between the boot and the outsole had come undone a little. I noticed a little cold “ breeze” because of this when stepping in to water or mud. But my feet were dry so they were waterproof. I thought, well, this ain’t such a big deal and I put some rubber boot glue to the hole to fix this. And it did. Not because of the little break in the seam that I had glued but both of the shoes got soaking wet. And I was in dry forest, just dewy! Am still- after three days of drying the shoes in room temperature, waiting for them to dry.Don’t know what to think- I want to love these shoes, and will use them but don’t trust them anymore to keep my feet dry.The other thing is the lacing, or the laces because they loosen up after a while walking and this really is a big no no. No knots help to keep them tight. Maybe too bulky? But these are very comfortable. After 20 km walking off-trail on the mountains my feet were just fine and did not complain at all. So, I’m confused because the shoe is comfy but the seam came undone after the first hike and the waterproof doesn’t concern dew. I know dew is a hard one for GTX but I honestly did not wait to get soaking wet feet after 10 minutes.

I bought the shoes on Zalando last year. Within a few months of usage, the shoe started showing some signs of wear even though I didn't use it so much. I was using it for weekend hikes near Berlin (flat land terrain with normal paths). I assumed that I was not taking care of the product well enough because my friend's shoe (Salomon X Ultra 3) was good even after a couple of years. It was only on his recommendation I bought Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX but it's already in an almost unusable state, with only very normal usage. As a student who bought these very expensive shoes, I feel disappointed and cheated!!!At first, I thought perhaps I did something wrong. Also, I'm not so sure about the GTX. I used the shoe in the drizzling rain a few times and I ended with wet socks. Also, the breathability is not great - after a 15km hike during winter, my socks are already wet from my own sweat.I really wish this shoe was as good as its predecessor. I'm with an expensive shoe in hand now but not feeling great due to its current state!!!

I purchased these shoes to use as my go to hiking shoe. Initial impression: loved them. The fit, the comfort, the style were all on point. Wore on a few shorter woods walks and they did well. I was super stoked on my purchase. But then I went to Utah and explored multiple nat'l parks & put in decent miles each day - these shoes were nothing short of a headache. The tongue does not stay in place what-so-ever. Constantly slides down & is beyond uncomfortable! I had to stop every 20 steps to pull them up & readjust. On both shoes. I was so frustrated hiking in these that I almost ended up barefoot. This was crushing - my liking to this shoe is close to minimal. The tongue situation definitely overrides any of the positives of this shoe. Do yourself a favor and do not ... MoreI purchased these shoes to use as my go to hiking shoe. I also have a pair of the QUEST 4 GORE-TEX hiking boots and constantly fight the tongue in those, too. Salomon makes a comfortable shoe don't get me wrong, but they need to figure out a better solution for the tongues. I will not be buying anything else from them.
I travel full-time in an RV, visiting every corner of nature I can get to. My ankles have always been a giant disappointment, so I’ve been rocking a pair of Salomon’s tall, heavy, stiff hiking boots forever. They’re not designed for all applications, though, and I’ve been desperate to find a comfortable, lightweight, grippy, and supportive pair of hiking shoes.I’ve tried all the other brands, and I’ve been giving very expensive hiking shoes to goodwill for many years. Always going back to my heavy mountain boots. Then I found the X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex. I originally purchased them in the mid, thinking my ankles would never tolerate anything less. Always going back to my heavy mountain boots. Then I found the X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex. I originally purchased them in the mid, thinking my ankles would never tolerate anything less. What I discovered was the contagrip on the soles of these shoes is so good at it’s job, my ankles barely even come into play for stabilization or slippage. Simply put, when I plant my foot somewhere, I have absolute confidence it’s staying where I put it and holding tight until I release it. For example, I hiked The Narrows in Zion NP in these shoes, and even in a rushing river, this sole did not let me down. This feature alone has changed the way I hike forever. My safety, and thus my confidence, is through the roof in these shoes!Other features I love: It wears like a tennis shoe and is light enough and flexible enough for daily wear, which I absolutely do. It is fully waterproof, as in, I have walked miles through tall wet grass and through downpours and still had dry socks when I got home. Miraculously, though entirely waterproof, my feet do not sweat in these shoes the way they do in almost every other shoe I own. I have never seen a waterproof yet breathable shoe, but the X Ultra 4 GT somehow manages both. The toe shield is tremendous without ever making my toes feel hemmed in. I have never had a blister in these shoes. I am forever a fan of the speedlaces, and I love how fast I can put these shoes on and be ready to walk out the door. The only two things I can think of that these shoes don’t do is keep my feet warm and resist stains. At the end of the day, I bought these shoes for function, not fashion and if it’s warmth I’m after, I change socks.I’ve easily got 300 miles on this pair, over all imaginable types of terrain, and though I’m back to purchase a second pair, there’s not a single thing wrong with my originals. A little red staining from miles of red dirt in Moab, a few scuffs from rock crawling in Acadia, and a light dinge overall that speaks to the many adventures these shoes have carried me through, but are otherwise none the worse for wear.I hope Salomon never stops making this shoe.
I bought these boots to prepare for the Half Dome hike with the cables at Yosemite. I broke in these boots enough to feel confident I’m for the day long hike. During the break in, I noticed that the hook eyelets sometimes were a nuisance. But it appeared to be a minor problem that I brushed off. Big mistake. I hiked Half Dome and through out the hike I continued to notice how the hook eyelets really didn’t allow me to keep the laces as tight as I’d like around my ankles. I also hit the hook eyelets a few times while merely walking. Then during the upward climb on cables, when I was quite tired, I somehow hit the hook eyelet and the shoe lace came off. I was petrified and shaking. Someone who was coming down on the cables offered to tie my shoe. I’ve never had this problem with other high top boots with similar hook eyelet. The placement posed a safety risk for me and I would not recommend these boots to anyone.
I bought these for a recent trip to Newfoundland, where I knew I'd be doing lots of walking in towns and hiking on trails and rocks. These shoes worked great for all terrain and had good grip on the rocks. I find them super comfortable, although slightly stiffer than I might have liked in the arch. (I'll note that I have a fairly narrow heel and a high arch. I buy flexible neutral running shoes.) To fit like a glove, they'd need to be a bit narrower throughout but I can compensate by choice of sock. I love how light and cushioned they are, since I find most hiking shoes and boots too heavy and clunky. I find them aesthetically pleasing and they were just fine out for dinner on the trip too.Based on some of the other reviews, I'll be paying close attention to how ... MoreI bought these for a recent trip to Newfoundland, where I knew I'd be doing lots of walking in towns and hiking on trails and rocks. I usually take a 9-9.5 but I bought an 8.5 in these. Another woman was buying the same ones at the same time for her upcoming trip to Iceland; she usually takes 8.5-9 but bought an 8. Great shoe - once you've figured out what size you need.
As the description says, I ordered a size smaller (7) than my usual size (7.5). The size is perfect, but not the width: the width is too tight for my feet. I don't know how these boots were made/designed (I mean, why we have to order a size small than our usual size), but I think I have found the reason; I think, the boots were accidentally made a size bigger by keeping the width of the real size. For example, I think the size of the one I ordered (size 7) is a size 7.5 in reality, but with a width of a real 7. I don't know if that makes sense. In another hand, I went to a store trying the 7.5 to give me an idea if I should order a size up, and the size was too big for me (it was like a size 8), but the width was perfect though. The size of my previous boots ... MoreAs the description says, I ordered a size smaller (7) than my usual size (7.5). Salomon was transparent and didn't try to convince me to keep the boots. FYI, I asked them if the boots take a bit of expansion after wearing these a few times, but they told me that the boots must be a perfect fit from the very first time we wear them.
Ordered this shoe to replace an earlier mid height Salomon Gortex hiker that I have worn for many years. It is awesome. I thought I would order up half a size, since I am doing much harder and steeper hikes and I’m starting to notice my toe is brushing/bumping on some descents. I am also older, and it may be that my feet swell more during a long hike. Customer service told me to order a full size down, as I was told they fit large. After explaining my situation again, I was told to maybe just order the same size, which I apprehensively did. Of course, the shoes showed up and they fit exactly the same as they used to. Sizing has not changed. If you wear a certain size with Solomon stick to that size. In my case, I did need to go up half a size. It appears that the quality of the materials is cheaper, and you no longer have the same flexibility in lacing as the lower metal eyelets are fixed and fully enclosed. The shoes are going back.
I was feeling pretty confident about these boots just after I bought them. I wanted something light and sturdy for an upcoming multi-way in Patagonia. I have been wearing them casually for several weeks and taking them out for moderate hikes every weekend. No break in, very comfortable initially. They have been great in mud, slippery rocks, and water. I replaced the insole with something that gives me more arch support. I wear thick, cushioned socks. However, as I’m ramping up my training on more challenging trails, these boots are leaving me in terrible pain after about 5 miles—mostly around my toes and just general soreness on the front of my foot.
