This is my first pair of Solomons. They are fantastic! Extremely comfortable with lots of support and shoe agility. I was using Red Wings for range days and they were too heavy and clunky. These boots are perfect for any activity, especially when you need to move athletically, as well as, stand for long periods of time. It is always hard to find a shoe/boot that you can move around like an athlete and also has the support and comfort for standing long periods of time. It is a great buy and well worth the investment!

I have purchased XA Gore-Tex shoes, both in Forces and Hikers. Probably 8 pair in the past decade. The Forces line continues to become more hard-wearing each season, while preserving comfort. However, in the current incarnation, Salomon removed the grab loop from the heel. I used this at all times, and now, I just fight to get them on. I've even fabricated a webbing loop to drop under the heel to try and replace the grab loop. I may stop buying Salomon boots due to this deficiency. I regret my purchase made four months ago, and would not have chosen these due to the deficiency. I just wasn't looking out for cheapening such great boots.

I bought these to replace the steel toed, steel shanked station boots I was issued. I currently own other Salomon boots, and these looked like they would suffice. After wearing these for 20 hours a day while on shift over the last couple months, I have found them to be extremely comfortable all day long. They can get a little warm on hot days but that will happen in any Gore-Tex boot.The construction is solid. It was noticeable right out of the box. The tread pattern is suited for the varying terrain I encounter. It is a little stiffer than the equivalent hiking boot but that helps add stability on some of the uneven terrain. Ordered both 10.5 (recommended) and 11.0 and no way the 10.5 was going to break in: toes immediately touched the front and it was clear it would become a painpoint. Example:- Given quick lace and poor cushioning of the tongue, quick lace tends to pressure through the tongue and mark on foot - even with thick Smartwhool socks- Less (none?) than other Salomon shoes protection between plastic sole and the Ortholite in-sole, so boot feels extremely harsh compared to other Salomon shoes/boots - even with thick Smartwhool socks#2 makes it thus hard to feel comfortable in the boot for longer hikes and running in rough terrain if required (if required as advertised as "forces" boot).Comparable boots such as Lowa, Merrell offer much more comfort and fit at very little if at all incremental weight and very similar pricepoint.
Bought a pair of these shoes and they were black at first, and for the most part they are actually great. They faded into a throw up green within 6-8 months. Warranty kicked in and I got a new pair. Second pair also faded but within 3-4 months. Clear defect of material or just poor quality of material. All I asked was for a completely new shoe with different material for the same price. Salomon refused and said the first pair should of been denied but an “exception” was made. If I buy a black shoe, shouldn’t it stay black???

Wading through cold, winter streams was no issue. Tread is great, no traction issues at all. So far, these boots are quite durable, navigating over rocks, logs and through briars with no damage. The quick lace system is super durable, easy on off, but, as stated above, need to pair them with padded socks because they're like steel wire.

Now, when I cinch the laces closed the plastic tab gets caught on the garage and loosens the laces. It is cumbersome to tighten the laces without the plastic piece loosening them. The shoe was much better with the garage under the tongue.Another issue: there is not enough padding above the foot (where the top of the foot and the tongue of the shoe meet.)For downhill hiking, this causes a lot of pressure on the top of the foot which becomes quite painful after a few miles.Lastly, the spectra/ dynema laces ... I wear 11.5 in most Salomon shoes and boots and ordered size 12.0 based on the fit of XA Pro's. That was the right decision. Unfortunately, I expected these boots to be close to XA Pro on other aspects too and they aren't. They are heavy, heavier than X Ultra 4, close to the Quest's 4 weight, and their sole and the upper is as stiff as Quest 4's if not stiffer. The only real similarity with the XA Pro is the tread of the outer sole which would likely result in similar limitations in traction. But don't get me wrong! Excellent service and pretty true to size. Wear on soles has been excellent especially since I march everywhere I go. I don't care for the lace system and little pocket for them. Little pocket gets loose over time. I would prefer if they had one more eye to secure more tightly around the ankles for better support. These are some of best boots I have owned and I waited for a sale get at almost half price. I have 8 inch in same also.
