The good: the shoes are comfy. The 3D chassis provided lots of cushion and support for my feet. I use them to walk on the sidewalks and streets in my neighborhood. I'm usually carrying my 5 month-old daughter in my arms, so I need some shoes with good cushion. When she was less than 10lbs, I could wear an old pair of Nike sneakers and be OK. As she got bigger, I needed shoes with more support and cushion. And these shoes provided support and cushion. I've been a user of the Salomon line of trail shoes for years. Everything from 6 day backpack trips to day hikes to daily kick around shoes and everything in between. I have long accepted that they won't last very long, for me, they have always been a great fit and worth the durability trade off for the comfort. That leaves me with bothering to write this review at all. I feel like they have been redesigning these shoes just for sake of redesigning. And there is a change they made that is driving me NUTS every time I put these shoes on. It's the tongue redesign. Whenever you put these shoes on, the tongue slides down with your feet and you are left trying to fish it out underneath this new skin they added which I believe is to try and keep dirt out. Well the old tongues were attached and never had a problem. These new ones are free floating and only attached at the very end. I swear a little curse every time I put them on. And this is coming from a die hard user. I am only hoping they will break in and form some sort of memory. WHY?!?!?!I'm seriously considering sewing them myself.

I am a 68 year old male with arthritic knees. I bought these shoes for a trip to Iceland during which we spent most of our days on easy to moderately hard (uneven surfaces and steep slopes) hiking trails. The shoes, paired with Bean wool hiking socks, were extremely comfortable. The fit was so good that I always felt like I was firmly attached to the trail even in high winds and steep uneaten hills. Simply put, these are the best hiking shoes I have ever worn.

I took advantage of the $129 sale price and bought a 10 and a 10.5 as my size can vary from shoe to shoe. One of my favorites is a 9.5 wide. Anyway, the 10.5 I felt that my ankle was always slipping—not good. I tried on with fresh Smartwool socks (sry) of differing types (hike/run); full crew vs ankle height; as well as padding (targeted, full, Light). The 10 was perfect for size but had a minor, yet concerning ‘defect’ on the outer sole where glued to the toe. There was a small indentation filled with glue—barely noticeable—but I thought would lead to or add additional stress when being stretched. I would have kept the 10s but instead tried a different pair—the Forsake trail shoe. I won’t elaborate but not my style—I should have kept the Salomon’s!
I bought these because Solomon discontinued my previous favorite shoe the X Ultra 3 Low GTX hiker. I'm on my second pair of the older model but headed to Europe soon and wanted a new fresh pair for that trip. Solomon's fit my D width foot extremely well and they are comfortable and can be worn all day for knocking about or hiking in the Rocky Mountains or some other favorite Colorado location. So after a lot of research I found these that looked very similar, share the same lacing setup and similar tread. Not carried in my local store so I ordered online during the XXV sale. I was nervous because Solomon has added a wide size so I was thinking if they change the shoe that the regular might now be too narrow.Well it wasn't too narrow in fact they fit just like the ... MoreI bought these because Solomon discontinued my previous favorite shoe the X Ultra 3 Low GTX hiker. I was nervous because Solomon has added a wide size so I was thinking if they change the shoe that the regular might now be too narrow.Well it wasn't too narrow in fact they fit just like the old model and like a glove. I haven't worn them that much because I'm saving them for my trip but I have enough experience with the brand that I know they are my new go to shoe for hiking. So happy I didn't have to look for another brand! The shoes are light, cool, durable, comfortable and good looking! The lacing system is a snap and hold the foot securely!
I wanted to like them, I think they are probably a good product, but they did not work for me. I gambled taking them out brand new for a 60 mile hike and I lost that gamble big time. I lost both big toenails completely off, bruised other toenails and got two awful blisters. I could not put them on for my last day on trail and opted instead to go 15 miles in flat flip flops. It was that bad. I returned the shoes and I do believe they are good for other feet, but not mine. Also, kind of deep; my ankles were bumping on the topline of the shoe. Rigid and a little tight; they seemed sized small to me.
Sturdy Gortex Hiking shoes that are almost perfectI've purchased five pairs of these shoes now. I take a mens size 12 and wish that they made 1/2 sizes or a wide version for a little more toe room. These shoes fit small so you need to go up a full size at least.Although there is a boot gaiter over the tongue the tongue itself is not secure and will slip down into the shoe when you slip your foot in. I always modify the shoe when new to sew the tongue to the gaiter to prevent this. In other manufacturers shoes they allow for laces to be threaded through a slot made in the tongue to prevent this from happening. I'm not sure why Solomon feels they can get away with not adding this simple addition.Otherwise, the shoe is great - -a firm, solid ride.
I've had a pair of these in V7, non-GoreTex for several years, and they have serviced me very well on several long backpacking trips, from the Smokies to Yosemite. Extremely rugged and comfortable, even with a heavy pack. I wanted a water-proof version for a wet winter trip and bought a pair of the V8 Gore-Tex version. Luckily, I wore them around the house and office a couple of days to try them out. They felt uncomfortably tighter than my older ones, and, sure enough, if I held them together you could see the newer model was 3/16" or so more narrow in the toe box area than my older shoes. I returned them to REI in resalable condition. Why the change, Salomon? You took a perfect shoe and made it unwearable for me! Very disappointed with these Saloman Trail-Running Shoes. I’ve had many pairs of Saloman trail shoes over the years and they were all exceptionally comfortable with literally no break in period. The Pro 3D V8 GTX are extremely uncomfortable even after many hikes and an insert trial. They also squeak. Which isn’t great for when I hunt.
I’m using these shoes for light hiking. First, I love that they’re waterproof. Second, after testing on so many lace-ups with varying degrees of ease, I love these super-easy pull laces. Third, they were perfect out of the box - walked across rock plateaus, woodland and home. Great in every situation. I have not had a chance to use them in rain yet. The only reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is because of a slight material crease into my left toe when I squat. Not my right toe, so this could be about my particular feet, not the shoe. I have pronated feet. It’s a relatively minor complaint.
