I bought one myself 2 years ago. I've found it very useful, especially when bread making, as I can accurately measure the liquid temperature now. So this one I have bought for my son. It's a good price and compares well with similar other products. It's very responsive when in use. I couldn't live without it now. The only bug bear is the battery compartment, as it's so small to access. However, I haven't needed to change it yet.

The battery compartment won't open - there's a miniature screw on it that requires specialist equipment to open so I can't remove the plastic cover to change the battery.Salter says I have to go out and waste my money buying specialist equipment JUST to open this battery cover. What a terrible design. Why would they DESIGN a product to be SO difficult to change the battery???For extra profits, so people can’t change the battery so they have to buy another thermometer from their company???This is ridiculous and shows absolutely ZERO thought or consideration for your customers.

I bought this as have wanted one for some time but never really bothered. Recently I had to cook a very expensive piece of meat for a dinner party and so thought it would be worthwhile. It saved the day as the joint cooked faster than we thought, was testing the temp regularly and this highlighted that the beef had cooked to the exact amount 20 mins ahead of schedule. So we got lovely medium rare rather than well done. Would recommend. Very quick reading.

New purchase online from amazon. Worked for maybe 2 mins in total now the display is constantly displaying 3 dots . No matter how many times I power it off then on the display does not show the temp just stuck on 3 dotsUnable to even remove the screw as its a super small ph00 screw head.Wasted of money where was the quality control.
If you are unsure what your fan oven is really achieving..on the day when 8 hungry adults are expecting fully cooked traditional fayre...you need a meat thermometer that works. The week before..Look up on Robert Dyas website, reserve and collect same day. Job solved.
Does its job well. Reasonably rapid in displaying temperatures. I generally resist buying items tied to a particular chef as they try to grab even more money, but this time I succumbed but glad I did. The thermometer comes with a handy sleeve which may be attached to a kitchen holder with a clip, rather like the clip on a pen. Additionally, it comes with a magnetic chart, the size of a credit card, detailing recommended temperatures for meat and poultry. Happy with this purchase.
There are cheaper meat thermometers out there but I'm pleased I bought this one. It's well made, has a clear display and - as far as I can tell at home - very accurate. I like the cover/sheath that comes with it which - if you were so inclined - could be used to clip into a pocket. That cover also doubles as an 'extension arm' for anyone wanting to use the thermometer over a pan of jam or similar.I think they must have changed the construction slightly recently: I was initially a bit perturbed to see a small (very small) screw in the battery cover, because there was no mention of this in the instructions, nor was it shown in any photos. I began to wonder if there was a trick to sliding the battery cover off without removing this which had escaped me! It didn't ... MoreThere are cheaper meat thermometers out there but I'm pleased I bought this one. It's well made, has a clear display and - as far as I can tell at home - very accurate. It didn't help when Salter online customer care initially said "don't remove the screw, that will invalidate the warranty". JL customer car on twitter was very helpful, and luckily I have a sufficiently small screwdriver to do the job.
I hope that this item will work as it is supposed to.... however there is NO MENTION in the instructions ( or in the diagrams ) that there is a VERY SMALL SCREW holding the battery flap in place which needs to be removed so that the plastic strip with " remove before use" label can be removed and the thermometer switched on. Please note that if you want to change from C and F you will need to remove the battery flap again !!!!See photo. We happened to have a set of tiny clock makers screwdrivers and even then it was quite a task.
As far as I can tell, this thermometer is accurate and precise to 0.1C Its response time is quicker than many other probes I've used. The magnetic temperatures chart for the fridge is useful to refer to later. The problem is that it isn't very durable. Firstly, if you measure the temperature of something very hot from the oven, perhaps around 200C, the heat travels up the metal spike and into the plastic housing. This deforms it slightly, and lets water in. This leads to the ultimate death of the device. I've just checked, and apparently 200c is the maximum rated temp for this probe, so maybe I should be more careful. At just 15 on ebay, maybe I'll buy another, but I'm not sure.
On the evening of 20 December, our electric oven blew an element. All the electricity in the kitchen went off. Once we got the electricity back on, we discovered that the oven wasn't working properly. A thermometer inside the oven revealed that it was slow to heat, and the temperature was erratic. We purchased this thermometer hoping that our Christmas turkey and beef filet wouldn't be ruined by the malfunctioning oven. Using this thermometer to occasionally test the meat, both the turkey and the beef, cooked on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, were cooked to perfection. We found the thermometer very easy to use, with excellent instructions.
