2TB of storage without much worry

With 2 TB you can store a lot and with read/write speeds similar to some internal hard drives you can do it faster or work from it directly. Of course, this is all dependent on what your device is capable of as using a USB2 port will still work, just not give you the same speeds. On the drive there is the application for Windows and Mac so that you can manage the security of the device by adding password and encryption. There is a link to the Google Play store of the Android app as well. Though not required, it is beneficial if you are traveling with sensitive information as this drive is meant to travel. The rubber casing on this drive really makes it feel like you could throw it across the room and still be good to go. I’m not trying it myself, but it feels a whole lot safer than the plastic shells of most external drives and sturdier than a thumbdrive. The size is easy enough to keep in a pocket and with the grip, probably not just going to slip out like your phone without a case. Overall, this drive is exactly what I need when working on the go. It relieves some of the anxiety other drives give me while giving the speed and capacity to work on practically anything digital. I feel that the only weak point would be the USB cables themselves over time and those can easily be replaced.

I’ve been a fan of the Samsung T-series external hard drives for some time now…they’re commonly regarded as among the fastest portable SSDs you can buy, and while the price is not trivial, they’ve been in the space for some time and have demonstrated decent reliability. The T7 Shield is another portable SSD from Samsung with a sort of “encrypt” function which optionally locks down the hard drive (provided you install the Samsung software) with a password. It is cross platform capable, supported on Windows, Mac (although not iOS, sort of) and Android. Without the software, it is just an external hard drive. As such, without the software, it can be used on virtually any platform supporting external storage (including iOS). With the software, and assuming the drive is locked down, only the read-only partition shows up on iOS devices. The only way to unlock the drive is with the software and the password, and without the password any stored data is inaccessible (it would be a pain if you forget the password, so make sure you store it in a vault or can remember it). When connecting the drive while it is “locked,” without unlocking it your computer will show a read-only partition with the installation media…so you won’t have to worry about being in front of a computer without the software installed. The software is super basic - allowing you to name the drive (although that doesn’t show up in the naming of the partition), and to turn on and off the drive lock. It’s a relatively simple installation unless you use a modern Mac. On a Mac, you need to boot to system security settings (something that I would bet most casual Mac users have never done) and adjust what kind of software is permitted for installation on your computer. It’s fine that it has to happen that way, but I really think the instructions for this should be included with the device. Other than the somewhat irregular installation requirements for Mac users, there isn’t a lot to complain about here. The price at $239 is in line with what I’d expect to pay for Samsung’s drives (considering their speed capabilities) currently, and having added functionality allowing locking down access to the drive is a nice bonus.

Great Little External Hard Drive
1 June 2022

This is the smallest and fastest hart drive I ever had. Pretty cool that technology is allowing us to store a large amount of data something that would fit almost in my wallet. Samsung is a brand that I trust because I know they are at the forefront of technology. I have been using Samsung memory types and different styles for quite some time either it be an SD card, flash drive, microSD card and other small data forms however this is my first time using a large dataform with Samsung. I usually hate having an external hard drive because they’re usually big and it adds weight to my computer briefcase However this little guy is just perfect. With it being rugged I don’t feel as worried to keep it on me. The IP 65 Rating makes it water resistant and dust proof which is great for anybody typically with a hard drive as it will help against things like rain, spills, We’re a normal amount of dust that you would come into contact with like from a work bag purse office drawer or car etc. It does also say has heat resistant material but I am wondering if this is more because it’s such a small compact size and it helps protect its own he would you will produce when downloading or uploading from the device. The USB 3.2 technology is really nice when supported by the opposite device such as a laptop or pc. This will allow for high data read/write speeds of up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s. If your main device does not support USB 3.2 It will not reach the speeds most likely however will reach the max be to which your device and USBs allow. So even if you do not have a current device that supports a USB 3.2, this will be preventative for the future as you are will already be equipped with a higher speed USB storage device or if you plug it in to somewhere else let’s say a friends computer. Yes this will work on a gaming console. This was tested on my PlayStation 4 which was able to upload A game without any flaws. If anything the floor was with the PS4 as it has a lower generation of USB ports. I’m sure the new Xbox and PS five probably have newer generations of USB ports which will be able to achieve higher rate read and write speeds however it is sufficient for the ps4.

For me, external SSDs are a bit of an oddball. They tout loads of performance, but being limited by the interface speed of USB. That said, this drive is fully capable of saturating the maximum speed of a USB SuperSpeed 10Gbps interface. To start, the drive is packaged well in a small, unassuming box. It includes 2 different USB cables which I'm fully appreciative of (one type-c to type-c, and one type-a to type-c) which is a breath of fresh air that they dont assume one particular interface over another. This packaging, like so many others recently, appears to be made of thin cardboard and fully recyclable without having to be creative with removing plastic or clamshells or anything. It seems an odd thing to call out in a review, but I feel like this more sustainable direction that companies are headed in, particularly those the size of Samsung, are worthy of note. Now for the drive. It's small in size, about the size of a deck of cards, but not quite as thick. The drive is covered in a rubberized exterior which is nice to the touch, although it picks up dust like crazy, which for anyone with a computer, can be a little bit of a concern as the drive will likely sit near a dusty area. The rubberized exterior also makes it difficult to brush off that dust, but honestly it does give it a nice luxurious feel. The drive itself is also heavier than expected, though not excessively so. The performance of the drive, as I hinted at earlier, is top-notch for an external drive. When connecting via USB-C 3.2 it fully saturated the interface, I would have no issues with using this for high speed copies or backups in any situation. I believe even XBox OneX/S or PS5s would be fully capable of utilizing this drive as external storage as well, which while not as quick as the internal drives, would be plenty fast from an external perspective. I've included a screenshot of the ATTO Disk Benchmark that shows the immense speed of the drive. All in all, this is a well made, solid performing external SSD. I heartily recommend it.

Neat, rugged little hard drive...fast too

There really aren't downsides I can see with this hard drive. If you need something with a bit more space than your typical USB drive but not as bulky as most other external drives, this is a nice little pickup that should suit just about anyone's needs. While it's bigger than your typical USB drive, it's not bulky or cumbersome as you would think. Dimension wise, it's a bit larger than a business card and neatly fits into your hand. The weight is really negligible IMO so it'll fit easily into your backpack or purse without issue. This is a "rugged" model so it's dust/water resistant, I can't really think of a scenario where this would be beneficial for me however, if you're a field photographer or doing anything tech related out in the wild blue yonder, this might ... MoreThere really aren't downsides I can see with this hard drive. For me, I'm a desk jockey so this will work perfect for me for transporting files and what not from home to office. It comes with two cables; One USB-C to USB-C and one USB-A to USB-C. For max speed, the USB-C to USB-C cable is ideal however it works fine with the USB-A cable since this is USB 3.2. 1TB, for me, is perfect for just about everything. From decks to large spreadsheets; there's no issue for me with running out of space on this drive . The only small thing I can pick out from this is that the coating on this drive is kind of a rubbery, matte finish. It picks up lint quite well and in great quantities so this should be something of interest for you. I kind of wished it was a smoother texture however, this being somewhat of a rugged drive, I guess it makes more sense to have this finish instead. I have oodles of USB drives lying around so I think it might be time to consolidate those into this one and have this as my main on-the-go drive.

OUTSTANDING – FAST, PORTABLE, ENCRYPTED SSD

Samsung has long been a dominant manufacturer of semiconductors and is a highly respected and popular choice for flash memory and SSD devices. Samsung developed many improvements in solid state memory technology and has cultivated an outstanding reputation for their solid state drives. The new T7 Shield is really a standout for several important reasons! I have been using a Samsung T7 Touch portable SSD for over two years, and have been extremely impressed with that drive’s speed, security, durability and reliability. Upon this new Samsung T7 Shield becoming available, I was confident that it too would be an excellent portable SSD, and a smart choice. The T7 Shield is available in 1 TB and 2 TB models with black, blue or beige cases. My 2 TB model has a black case with a rubberized elastomer material over a rigid shell, and it appears that it should prove to be both rugged and durable. .This ruggedized device is IP65 rated for water and dust resistance and is claimed to be tested as drop resistant up to 9.8 feet (3 meters). The dimensions of the T7 Shield are 3.5” in length x 2.3 in width” x 0.5” in thickness. It weighs only 3.47 ounces. It is lightweight, compact, rugged and fast, which are the primary reasons that I like the T7 Shield a great deal. Portable SSDs are extraordinarily convenient and useful for many purposes. Video content producers and photographers find them to be essential. Given their large capacity and high data transfer rates they are ideal for those purposes as well as data backup and storage, and notably, for use as a portable file store when using multiple computers, and particularly when travelling away from home or primary workplace. Creating several hundred still images and video files in an average week, as well as creating many large editing and workflow project files demands large capacity, fast, reliable drives. Coupled with the need for portability of all of that data, and more, selecting the best and most reliable portable SSDs that I can find is extremely important. I rely on Samsung portable SSDs and thus far, I remain very satisfied with them. The Samsung T7 Shield is ideally suited to both working with your primary computer as well as when away from a primary computer. The T7 Shield is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Android devices, as well as gaming consoles. I have not used the T7 Shield with a Mac or a gaming console, but I have used it with Windows and Android devices, as well as Chromebooks. One of the very significant advantages of the Samsung T7 Shield, and of major importance when selecting the best SSD for travel, is the security features embedded in the T7 Shield. Password protected AES 256-Bit hardware encryption makes this a very secure storage device, especially if travelling with sensitive data. Furnished in the box with the T7 Shield are two high-quality USB 3.2 Gen 2 cables. Both a USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable and a USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable are included. The USB cables are a generous 17.5” long which is very convenient and useful, and much better than the ridiculously short USB cables which are supplied with drives from some other manufacturers. There is a printed Installation Guide included, but the PDF only User Manual must be downloaded from the Samsung website. Once attached to a computer, the Samsung T7 Shield immediately mounts and displays a read-only partition containing the Samsung Drive Management Software. I also located the Samsung Android App in the Google Play Store. The T7 Shield is preformatted in exFAT, which is appropriate for Windows PCs, Macs and Chromebooks. Once the software is installed, the process of password creation is simple and straightforward. The T7 Touch can also be used without password security (unlocked drive). Password creation and management requires the use of the pre-loaded Samsung Portable SSD Software. I have been using an outstanding Samsung T7 Touch portable SSD for over two years. The user interface screen of the Samsung Portable SSD Software recognizes all attached compatible drives, and allows easy and efficient administration and management of each of the attached drives from the home-screen. The management software functionality is used for setting up or modifying the drive security, and for obtaining updates for the software and drive firmware. The drive management software is not compatible with, and thus not installable on some devices, such as Chromebooks, but that only limits administration of security features. The software was compatible with my Android phones, but none of my Chromebooks, including a very new Chromebook. The T7 Shield SSD hardware works perfectly well with all of my devices including my Chromebooks. The installed software runs as a background process occupying 0.4 MB of RAM on my laptop when the drive is mounted. In addition to the preloaded Samsung Portable SSD software, Samsung Magician Software is an SSD management utility that is available for download from the Samsung website. It is an excellent utility for monitoring the health of all compatible Samsung SSDs and for easily reading the drive specific information including current firmware version. Unfortunately, other features of the Samsung Magician, including diagnostic scans and performance optimization are not available for use with the T7 series drives. Samsung Magician monitors and displays the drive temperature (in °F or °C). The data from Samsung Magician validated my personal observations that the T7 Shield has excellent temperature control. The Samsung T7 Shield does of course become warm when attached to a computer, and generates heat in proportion to activity when it is actively in use. However, the empirical data demonstrates that the Samsung T7 Shield runs relatively cool for a portable SSD, even when there is significant drive activity. The T7 Shield was running at 83°F the majority of the time, and did not exceed 97°F even when there was a very high level of drive activity. Samsung employs their Dynamic Thermal Guard technology to monitor drive temperature and degrade performance when the pre-defined threshold is reached. It is probably safe to assume that the drive has internal heat sinks and/or phase-change material to mitigate thermals. It is my understanding that Samsung employs a single layer PCM (Phase Change Material) to somewhat mitigate the heat generated by active use (presumably encapsulated paraffin wax). The T7 Shield has a small LED lamp on the end of the housing next to the USB-C connector. Blue LED illumination indicates drive activity, and red illumination indicates stopping/dismounting the drive. The high transfer rate specifications for the Samsung T7 Shield are a very impressive 1050 Mbps for Sequential Reads and 1000 Mbps for Sequential Writes. Those fast data transfer rates are attributable to the PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) bus, NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) memory and USB 3.2 Gen2 connectivity. Testing the Samsung T7 Shield with CrystalDiskMark 8 produced results of 1065.91 MB/s Sequential Reads and 1003.14 MB/s Sequential Writes. Samsung Magician reported 977 MB/s Sequential Reads and 965 MB/s Sequential Writes. Of course there are even faster SSD drives available, notably those using the faster Thunderbolt 3 interface, such as the Samsung X5. However, the T7 Shield supports the fastest data transfer rates available for USB interface SSD drives, and further the Samsung T7 Shield actually does achieve the extremely fast data rates claimed by the manufacturer. The Data transfer rates did not appear to be affected at all by AES 256 Bit hardware encryption. Overall, the Samsung T7 Shield is absolutely great. It offers large capacity, fast data transfer rates and password protected AES 256-Bit hardware encryption. It is very compact and lightweight and is ruggedized to offer protection from the perils of portability. Additionally, being a Samsung SSD is in and of itself a strong motivation for selecting the Samsung T7 Shield. The Samsung T7 Touch is outstanding, and I highly recommend it!

Ports Matter
26 May 2022

The 2TB Samsung T7 Shield checks all the boxes for high-performance external storage: Spacious. Fast. Reliable. Speeds are rated up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write, and it comes with a three-year warranty. I benchmarked the drive on two different systems. First was a Windows 10 laptop. On the correct port, results are acceptable: USB 3.2 Type-C Sequential Read: 971.41 MB/s (92.5% rated speed) Sequential Write: 925.28 MB/s (92.5% rated speed) USB 3.0 Type-A Sequential Read: 972.96 MB/s (92.7% rated speed) Sequential Write: 925.61 MB/s (92.6% rated speed) Results are predictably slower on a USB 2.0 connection: USB 2.0 Type-A Sequential Read: 43.35 MB/s (4.1% rated speed) Sequential Write: 40.84 MB/s (4.1% rated speed) My Windows 11 computer has Thunderbolt 3 ... MoreThe 2TB Samsung T7 Shield checks all the boxes for high-performance external storage: Spacious. (Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 support PCIe.) These ports were the only ones to provide full rated speed: Thunderbolt 3 Sequential Read: 1072.26 MB/s (102% rated speed) Sequential Write: 1019.88 MB/s (102% rated speed) At 2 TB, the Samsung T7 Shield has ample room for data, photo, and video storage. This is a high-performance external SSD and using it for something as mundane as backup or media storage/delivery feels criminal. I tested real-world performance of the drive by moving my Steam library onto it. These days I’m exploring the Lands Between. Elden Ring loads and runs smoothly. The performance hit versus the internal SSD was evident but negligible. I played for hours and experienced no thermal issues with the T7 Shield. I have tried this in the past with other external SSDs and ran into heat dissipation problems that eventually caused thermal throttling and intolerable usability issues. This drive stays cool under use. I cannot say anything negative about the Samsung T7 Shield. It has room to spare, and in my testing it performs flawlessly. I can recommend it without hesitation.

Rugged, Fast and Spacious SSD

The Samsung T7 Shield 1TB External USB 3.2 Gen 2 is a fast solid state storage device. Ruggedly encapsulated in a rubberized enclosure, this drive is easy to hold on to and is perfect for on-the-go use. To start, the drive is packaged well in a small, unassuming box. It includes 2 different USB cables which I'm fully appreciative of (one type-c to type-c, and one type-a to type-c) glad that Samsung didn't assume one particular interface over another. This packaging, like so many others recently, appears to be made of thin cardboard and fully recyclable without having to be creative with removing plastic or clamshells or anything. This solid state drive is compatible with Mac, PC, Android devices, even gaming consoles. I tested it on my Windows 10 and it was instantly recognized & ready for plug and play action. Most impressive to me was how I can edit 4K video on the fly with this drive, thanks to the ridiculously fast speed. I love this solid state mega drive. It's small in size, about the size of a deck of cards, but not quite as thick. The drive is covered in a rubberized exterior which is nice to the touch, although it might picks up dust which for anyone with a computer, can be a little bit of a concern as the drive will likely sit near a dusty area. The rubberized exterior also makes it difficult to brush off that dust, but honestly it does give it a nice luxurious feel. The drive itself is also heavier than expected, though not excessively so. Its also got a small form factor as compared to my Segate 1TB external SSD drive. All in all, this is a well made, solid performing external SSD. I heartily recommend it.

Rugged, Solid, and Fast

I needed another external portable drive for doing backups and decided to grab the new Samsung T7 Shield 2tb SSD. Unboxing and first impression: The drive came nestled in a standard Samsung logoed box, and a recyclable pressed paper container. Well protected but doesn’t need that too much as this thing is built to be rugged. There’s also a pair of cables, USB C to USB C and a USB A to USB C, nice that they include both, and some paperwork, that’s it. The drive itself is smaller than I expected, it’s also heavier than expected to when comparing it to an internal SSD drive. The drive feels very solid, no flex to it at all “brick like strong”, and is coated with a non-slip rubber coating making it very easy to hold on to and it sure won’t be sliding around very easy ... MoreI needed another external portable drive for doing backups and decided to grab the new Samsung T7 Shield 2tb SSD. The drive feels very solid, no flex to it at all “brick like strong”, and is coated with a non-slip rubber coating making it very easy to hold on to and it sure won’t be sliding around very easy either. There’s a single USB C port on one end along with a power/activity light. Use: My computers all have USB C ports so am trying and benchmarking this on my desktop unit that has a USB C 3.0 port. I’ve run a complete series of Crystal Disk Mark benches on it and it maxed out the port speeds on this desktop without a hitch. The drive is extremely fast compared to any of my spindle drive based external drives “way faster, and during the benchmarking the drive never felt hot to the touch, just barely warm. And in typical SSD fashion all the benchmarks look almost identical no matter what the file size. Conclusion: If you are looking for a rugged “very rugged” external drive to store files or use as backups. The drive also supports 256bit encryption and has the software already on the drive ready for you to install. Our security camera setup saw it with no issue and I could configure it for backing up files if we wanted. The size of the drive really impressed me, it’s small “about the size of a credit card” but it’s naturally thicker “around 0.5” at the thickest part”. This is a little on the spendy side but it’s well worth it, and I won’t complain as I paid that much for the old 256gb spindle one I got when they first came out “actually more than that”. I do like that it has a IP 65 rating which means it’s completely sealed from dust and can take direct water spray “just no immersion”, but I don’t plan on keeping this around a pool or near water where it could be dropped in. I think you’ll be happy with this drive if you don’t need something with more storage “then you have to go to a spindle based drive” and want something that’s easily portable and can slip into your pocket easily, plus not having to worry too much about dropping and damaging it.
