Among the best SSDs --- but ---

I never cheap out when buying new SSDs for my workstations. Samsung EVO drives come with a 5-year warranty, and are generally considered to be top-of-the-line in their class. I bought 2 of these from B&H for a RAID1 array in a new HP workstation. After about 5 hours total use, the array reported one failed drive! I did my usual due diligence, checked and rechecked the connectors, etc. Still bad. OK, so I went to Samsung's website to fill out the warranty info and found a number of roadblocks. First, their system would not accept the serial number of the failed drive as valid - not enough digits! I had this drive for about six months using it as a storage drive. A few weeks ago, this drive started throwing I/O errors and started accumulating thousands of bad sectors. After some research, I found other users online that have 2TB and 4TB 870 EVO drives experienced the same issues with this drive as well. Apparently, many 870 EVO drives manufactured in 2021 were defective and lead to early failures. If you want to purchase this drive, I recommend checking the manufacture date prior to purchasing it. If it was made in 2021, it might be best to avoid this drive altogether. You can RMA the drive if it starts to fail, but I have not been able to get any help or response from Samsung Memory Support for the RMA requests I submitted. Best Upgrade Path for Older Systems

The whittling was easy as Samsung boasts the best reviews and highest benchmarks for SSD's across the spectrum, and when it went on sale for Memorial Day, I reserved a unit and picked it up the next day. After a straightforward install and cloning the boot drive over, I was thrilled and amazed at the results! Boot times under thirty seconds, programs loading almost instantly, in every aspect quite literally feeling like a new computer! All for less than what I paid for RAM and power supply upgrades. For anyone putting off the move to an SSD, the time has come to overcome your reluctance. The speed, reliability, and cost have reached the triple-point where to not do so is to live in an ossified computer past where HDD's spin and OS's lag as your coffee gets cold before your system completes booting. And Samsung is the brand to maintain this elevation of your system. I only wish I had purchased this product sooner.

Fantastic SSD Drive, Top of the Line...

Wanted to get a new, larger SSD for my laptop to replace a 10yo Samsung PM830 which has been an amazing drive with 9yrs of on time & still has 80% health. However, Samsung wasn't my first choice for replacement. I was looking for something cheaper but as I learned more & more, I realized you need to buy a reputable name brand drive. Quality & performance is very sporadic if you don't. The price scared me away from Samsung to start. Again, the more I learned, I found you can get an EVO 870 1TB for about the same price as a budget brand, such as Adata. Only an extra $20 at this date, but you get so much more for that extra. Wasn't even aware I could achieve those speeds, refer to the included JPG. Without performance cache enable, I'm right at the advertised read/write speeds of 550/500. The only thing that sucks is never having access to the full capacity rating, but that's a norm, then it you use over provisioning you lose even more. Other than that, this is the best SATA drive on the market. I even bought a second one as a backup. The only downside is that I came across tech forums discussing possible issues with these drives. Those issues regard early drive failure, where relatively new drives begin to show uncorrectable errors, ECC error rate, CRC error rate, reallocated sector count start to rise via CrystalDiskInfo. Then it just keeps getting worse & worse. The Samsung software also verifies this. However, it seems Samsung is willing to stand by their warranty & RMA the drives. I haven't experienced any of those issues so far but will be keeping an eye on those statistics with CrystalDisk in case it does start to happen. This is definitely an issue that shouldn't be happening with a name & price like Samsung, so hopefully they take care of the issue.

Revived my 6 Year old Windows laptop

I was struggling with my 5 year old laptop at a point, I was not opening that at all. That was budget laptop having moderate specs (having standard old HDD only) that makes the machine feels like almost 7-8 years old. I almost forgot how frequently I open it (may be 3 times in a month!!). It was severe pain in the neck. Now, I found this from Best Buy at a deal price and installed it by myself. What a turn around this become. This beast ssd alone turns my machine alive. I practically opening it now almost each day to perform my regular task. From Booting up to screen ready (where I can open first app), it takes about 5 seconds which earlier was 10 mins. Opening multiple apps or browser tabs is also buttery smooth which was impossible earlier. Samsung 870EVO 2TB NAND SSD - Good, Not Perfect

I have purchased several of these Samsung 870EVO drives recently for PC client notebook upgrades. The price was a little higher than what I would usually install but the Samsung name and reliability helps to sell the higher price. Installation is easy and Windows 7/10 recognizes the drives without a problem. The Samsung website has updated drivers while the Samsung Magician software monitors the TRIM on these SSD's to keep them in reasonable shape (If the client wants the software installed). I have not experienced infant mortality for any of the Samsung SSD's I have purchased and no complaints either which is a plus for me. The drives seem to run cool enough in the notebook PC's even with High CPU usage and heavy read/write activity. My only real concern is the VNAND technology combined with the warranty, stated MTBF, and TWB from Samsung for these VNAND SSD's. In high read/write applications (large video file transfers and Video Processing), the lifespan of these VNAND SSD's is sub-optimal. This is especially true when using this drive as a primary OS drive in combination with it being used as a storage drive. The relatively large size of the drive is supposed to mitigate the cells wearing out. I do not necessarily believe that for high write/read cycle applications with very large files but, time will tell. For most applications, these SSD's will work fine (IMO). I still prefer TLC technology for SSD's that have high read/write requirements to give better longevity. The slower speed and higher price for large capacity makes them less desireable for most PC applications (gaming?) so I can recommend these Samsung 870EVO SSD's for them.

After running the migration program to clone the contents of the old drive to the new one, installation was literally a three-minute job. NOTE: REMOVE THE BATTERY COMPLETELY, AND CHARGING PLUG BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO UPGRADE YOUR LAPTOP! Unscrew the drive cradle, pull from laptop, remove from old drive, install on new drive, slide back into laptop and secure the screw. Flip the unit back on its feet, and reattach battery and charging plug. Press power button and it’s like nothing ever occurred, laptop will start normally and you’ll pick up right where you left off. Works Great!

This SSD is way faster than HHD. I used it as an external bootable drive for old iMac 27 using thunderbolt-2 enclosure. Downloaded the latest macOS on this drive and migrated all data from computers hard drive to this drive. Made my 10 years old iMac27 10 times faster. Computer literely starts up in 18 seconds. The Read and write speed of old internal hard drive was only 85. Samsung 870's read and write speed is over 800. The disk is fast, reliable and well worth the money spent. Any working old mac can be upgraded using this as an external or internal bootable drive. It can also be used as Time Machine backup drive or storage drive for phots, videos or other big files that take time to save. Intend to buy 2 more to upgrade older MacBook pro computers.

great drive but cloning software not ready for prime time

I purchased the Samsung 1TB 870 to be a clone for my existing Samsung 1TB 860 EVO drive which has been working flawlessly, just so I could recover quickly if any type of failure should occur. However, I had to take a star off because the Samsung Data Migration software does not work as specified in the documentation. I am running up to date Windows 10 pro. After installing both the current 860 and the new 870, the Samsung Data Migration software recognized both drives correctly but would only create on partition on the new drive, not the three partitions (backup) required for Windows. The documentation clearly states it will support up to three partitions but the actual software would only allow one!
