The 990 Pro extends Samsung’s leadership in the NVMe SSD space with a capable upgrade from the 980 Pro. This unit has a heatsink providing additional thermal dispersion to support the increased performance and throughput.Installation was very straightforward. I used this SSD in my PC as an additional data disk rather than a boot drive. I located the available M.2 slot on my motherboard where I was planning to install the drive. After powering the PC back on I noticed the built-in LED on the heatsink which is cool addition for knowing that the drive is receiving power and functioning, though compared to other RGB elements in my setup the single segment of LED doesn’t feel like enough – if you don’t like the red color you can change the color through the Magician ... MoreThe 990 Pro extends Samsung’s leadership in the NVMe SSD space with a capable upgrade from the 980 Pro. I proceeded with setting up the drive through the Disk Management Utility in Windows 11 where I created a new partition and volume which I then mounted so that I could begin utilizing it.SSDs are different from hard drives so firmware improvements can make a big difference to the life and the performance of the drive. So, while it’s optional, I recommend installing the Samsung Magician software to verify that the firmware is up to date as well as run some performance diagnostics. I got a really impressive 7100 MB/s read and 6754 MB/s write along with 441406 and 386230 IOPS for the read and write respectively in the Magician application with unspecified settings. I ran additional tests in CrystalDisk Mark which I've attached to this review. Especially impressive is the random reads and writes of this drive which show solid improvement over the 980 and other comparable SSDs.For the most part I’ve been using it for photo/video storage and editing as well as storage for games. My primary boot drive that was using for media storage as well is a 1TB SSD from Micron which is a bit slower (about 34% in sequential read/writes) so needless to say I’ve noticed a considerable improvement when importing and rendering out video when utilizing the new drive especially thanks to the incredible random read/write performance.

This is one of the top Nvme's you can buy, if you dont have a motherboard that gives you a heatsink cover for your nvme then get the version with a heatsink, especially depending on your airflow and the placement in the motherboard, these things can get fairly hot when copying a lot of files.I have a 980 pro that I originally used as my System drive, the Samsung Magician application made it so so easy to make an exact duplicate of that drive straight to my 990pro, and then by changing the boot drive in the BIOS it booted up without one issue. Just keep it in mind. If you don't know what happens when an nvme starts to overheat, it'll temporarily drastically lower it's performance, and like with all electronics more heat exposure overtime shortens the life of the electronic. Also, make sure you install Samsung Magician regardless, at least at first/temporarily, because your 990 pro may need a firmware update that might be quite necessary to avoid issues down the road.

I have been trying for days to get the 990Pro 4 TB drive to use Bitlocker Hardware encryption like all my previous Samsung SSD drives. Bought 990 PRO 4tb w/ Heatsink in June 2024 and have been using it for over a month in Dell Alienware R16 running Win 11 (replacing / upgrading the 1tb stock drive). Learned about 3 significant issues online related to this drive: bad firmware, drive disappearing from Windows and Bios, and drive degradation issues - so first thing was to download the Magician software to update firmware and drivers. Despite that, I kept experiencing drive disappearance issues randomly but frequently during first few weeks. Recently changed setting to "Full Performance Mode" at all times to see if the disappearance issues would stop. This has been a disappointment. In addition, ran multiple Performance Benchmarks in Magician and never gotten close to the advertised read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s. Only getting about 6700/5700 MB/s in "Full Performance Mode" (a little higher using CrystalDiskMark but still falling short of the advertised speeds). So performance is yet another disappointment.
I am absolutely shocked and disappointed by my recent experience with Samsung. I purchased a Samsung 990 Pro SSD directly from their official website, expecting to receive a high-quality product. Instead, I was sent a counterfeit SSD!After noticing extremely slow transfer speeds (only 19 MB/s on a drive that should handle thousands), I contacted Samsung support. Their technician confirmed the worst—the SSD I received was fake! I trusted Samsung to deliver a legitimate product, especially when buying directly from their website, but this is completely unacceptable. This experience has shattered my confidence in Samsung. I’m left questioning how such a reputable company could allow counterfeit products to slip through their own sales channels.I expected far better from Samsung. I hope they investigate and resolve this issue, but the damage to my trust in their brand is already done. I urge others to be cautious when buying from Samsung’s site. I never imagined I’d be dealing with fake products from the source.I’ll be taking this matter further if it isn’t resolved soon. Very disappointed.

Even with large game files exceeding 100GB, installing, moving, or deleting them happens in a matter of seconds.Fast File Transfers:One of the biggest headaches for gamers is managing disk space, especially with the size of modern AAA games. With the 990 PRO, transferring games between drives or deleting old files to free up space is super fast. The SSD can handle these tasks effortlessly, making it incredibly convenient when you need to quickly make room for the next big title.Improved Gaming Experience:The low latency and high random IOPS of this SSD improve overall game performance, especially in open-world and highly detailed environments where loading assets quickly is critical. Games feel smoother, and there’s no stutter or lag even when streaming high-res textures or loading large maps.Power Efficiency:Even when gaming for long sessions, the thermal management and power efficiency of the 990 PRO mean it stays cool and doesn’t drain unnecessary power from your system. This makes it a solid option for gaming laptops as well. Conclusion:If you're a serious gamer and want to minimize downtime, the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB is hands down one of the best SSDs out there. I highly recommend it if you're looking to upgrade your rig for faster load times, quicker transfers, and smoother gameplay. It's a bit on the premium side price-wise, but the performance boost is absolutely worth it!Pros:Incredibly fast load times for gamesSuper quick file transfers and deletions to manage game storageExcellent thermal managementPerfect for gaming PCs and consoles like the PS5Cons:Premium price tagIn short, if you’re tired of waiting on slow load screens and want seamless gaming, the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB SSD is 100% worth the investment!

Not sure if it's because there's so much on there and drives slow with higher space consumption or something. That being said, it's still SUPA FAST!All in all though, I am SUPER satisfied with my purchase. I've even thinking of jumping to the 4TB drive when my new Frame.Work computer arrives.

The Samsung 990 Pro 2TB is an excellent NVMe SSD hard drive. It comes with a heatsink, which keeps it cooler than NVMe SSDs that do not have heatsinks. The difference is highly significant, so I highly recommend to purchase it with Samsung's heatsink, or use a good third-party heatsink. The heatsinks that come with most motherboards are average at best.I will say that the first Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe I purchased had issues. It would crash with blue screen of death (BSOD). It took a few weeks to troubleshoot and come to the conclusion it was the SSD.Thank you to Best Buy for having a great return policy. They seem to be cutting corners with their quality and assurance testing. It could be more rigorous. With that said, I still give it a five-star rating because the replacement is working as intended. I may have received a "dud" and I was unlucky.
Samsung makes the best SSDs hands down. I have used them in over 30 computers in the last 15 years with no issues at all. One even has 24TB written to it. Sure, other competitors are catching up, but they just cannot top the performance, reliability, and longevity. I have included a pic of a WD test and a 990 Pro test. Neither were enhanced, optimized, or set to performance. Just a straight out of the box test on laptops with less than 30 minutes of up time.Side Note: The UserBenchmark test had a hard time reading the 990 Pro for some reason, but was able to test the others just fine.
