The 44mm display features the same 450x450 resolution as the Watch 4 and has plenty of brightness, making it easily visible in broad daylight. However, this year the screen is protected by Sapphire glass which should bring a significant improvement in protection. On the back of the watch, the sensor array includes the familiar heart rate, ECG, and blood-oxygen sensors but has been expanded this year to include a new IR temperature sensor. In the future, this new sensor could be used to help with things like sickness tracking.Internally, the watch continues to rely on the same Exynos W920 processor as the Watch 4 as well as carrying over the same 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The battery, however, has been upgraded to a new, larger 410mAh unit with an advertised 50hr of usage. Charging is also improved with 10W WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) charging that can give you enough juice to get through a work day with only 8 minutes on the magnetic USB-C puck.Software wise, the watch is running Wear OS 3.5 with Samsung's One UI Watch 4.5 sitting on top. The merger of Samsung and Android Wear continues to be a match made in heaven. Gone are the days where, if you paired a Samsung watch with a non-Samsung phone, you were unable to use things like NFC payments. Now, with access to the whole Google Play ecosystem, you have a much broader pool of apps available.Specs and numbers aside, the watch performs beautifully. Setup is easy to step through both with Samsung phones (tested with a Galaxy S21) as well as non-Samsung phones (tested with a Pixel 6). Flipping through tiles is smooth and stutter free. Notifications appear instantly and offer a lot of customizability for what does and doesn’t appear. Battery life has more than easily gotten through a day, which is all I honestly need as I charge every night. Health features like step counting and heart rate are comparable to that of the Fossil Gen 6 I was using beforehand. If I have any complaint here at all, its that the bulge of the sensor array on the back of the watch is…awkward. The phone really ends up sitting high on my wrist and can collect dust and dirt between my arm and the watch when doing things like working outside. At the end of the day, if you’re currently sporting a Watch 4, the incremental improvements to the Watch 5 mean you can probably skip this update. But if you’re looking for your first smartwatch or upgrading something older, you really can’t go wrong with this watch. With almost exclusive (currently) access to Wear OS 3, the larger battery, faster charging, and the stronger Sapphire glass display, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is not just the best Galaxy Watch to date but probably the best Android Wear OS watch ever.

This is my 3rd Samsung watch. My first was a Gear S3, second was a Watch 3 and now a Watch5 Pro. I can honestly say that the watch has gotten better with each iteration. I was initially worried about this purchase as it contained the removal of the front face dial that served as a functional slider essentially, but I now feel that my worry wasn't warranted. I believe if the watch was equal or less responsive than the Watch 3 then the removal of the dial would be an issue, but I am proud to say that the Watch5 Pro is much more responsive, especially when receiving a notification. I used the dial mostly to initiate the viewing of notifications that delayed in displaying. I used the dial mostly to initiate the viewing of notifications that delayed in displaying. Notifications are much faster to load and the viewing of those notifications are much easier for someone with aging eyes (I am far sighted and do wear medium strength reading glasses). I think most of the software benefits has come from the move from Tizen to Wear OS. One thing that stands out to me is the texting capability on the watch itself. It was about impossible on my older Watch 3 but on the Watch5 Pro it has the swipe texting which works very well so it is a huge step forward in this area. The battery is another big improvement although I will say the Samsung line of watches have always had much better battery life than other watches, but with the Watch5 Pro the battery life is not in days a required everyday charge. Obviously if you use the always on display you will have a couple of days life vs not using always on display will allow double that (depending on notifications and workouts also.) The last major upgrade I will mention is the D-Buckle band (this is one of the band options when purchasing.) If you are like me and very particular about the amount of pressure and location of your watch, then this band is the one for you. I think of it like a belt that uses holes to achieve the proper tightness, but one hole is too tight and one hole over is too loose. This band eliminates that issue and is by far the best band I have ever had on a watch. I have been using the Watch5 Pro for a couple of months and I have no buyer's remorse at all.

It's a nice slim lightweight design, and having always struggled with watches to fit my very small wrists this is perfect and very comfortable to wear. The health features are fantastic, sleep tracking, heart rate and steps I often look at and seems very accurate to me. Having a health condition which can be affected by my quality of sleep this watch certainly helps me track that and help to make improvements to my sleep. It gives a detailed report for sleep pattern which is very easy to understand. Connects to my phone seamlessly and was very easy to a set up. Its extremely beneficial to me for work as I can check emails, texts and calls without having to check them on my phone and reply to anything important straight from the watch itself. Little features like having a calculator on there really help in the work place. After a 9 hour shift at work I do find that when I come home I need to put the watch on charge, but it's charges up to full very quickly so I don't need to have it off for long. There is many customisation features for the watch face which is great and currently I have it cycling through my own photos which I set up on my phone, which is a nice personal touch. You can also download quite a lot of additional apps through the play store on the watch itself. It's definitely hard wearing as I have accidentally banged it a few times whilst at work and there is not a mark on it so the quality of the screen is great.Overall I'm very pleased with this watch does everything I wanted plus more, and would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get a smart watch that this is ideal for many, from anyone looking for full fitness tracking and health tracking or even just as a watch for taking calls replying to messages, using contactless payments, and simple for just telling the time. First smart watch

First time buying a smart watch and I bought the same brand as my phone for compatibility. Myself and my partner are quite active and our friends use different brands for running, cycling etc., but decided to go with this as I could control other Samsung devices in my home much easier. My partner ultimately convinced me to buy one as she said it will help with tracking milestones in my training.Initially really easy to setup and pair. Controversially to some I wear watches on my right arm just because it feels more natural to me, the difficult bit was undoing the starps to swap them round and then swapping the watch face via the smart watch app, I know other watches just have a slide catch which is easier, if you have bigger fingers this may be a bit tricky on ... MoreFirst time buying a smart watch and I bought the same brand as my phone for compatibility. I'm still getting use to arranging the tiles as some of my more used apps require a fair bit of scrolling which is a bit frustrating but in terms of functionality it is pretty intuitive.I would recommend buying a cover for it as the glass is raised above the metal casing, looks like it could be easily broken even though they say they've strengthened the glass. I can see why some reading the reviews of older and newer models prefer the rotating bezel on the 4 series, it adds a bit of protection. The screen is sensitive enough to work absolutely fine with my case.Downside is the face won't stay on for long enough if you are trying to time exercises using samsung fit, even select always on display and increasing the screen time it still times out after 15-30 seconds, even worse if you take it off your wrist to perform a plan or something. The watch detects it is off your wrist and keeps turning the screen off - the only way to do this is to go onto the actual stop watch app which means coming out of your fitness app to time.Overall a great watch sk far and the battery life is sometimes over a day. I use alot of fitness tracking apps so I wouldn't expect it to last more than 24hours without needing a charge.

Great Product

I got this when it came out and its been a couple of months now that I've been using this thing. I recently had an Apple Watch Series 3 and for a bit I was a bit disappointed(I'll explain). At first, the animations werent really as smooth as I was expecting it to be, but I slowed them down to 1.5x and it seemed to handle it very well. At first whenever you try unlocking your watch, the animations on clicking are very laggy and not smooth, but that seemed to have been fix on the November patch update they rolled out and it works smoothly even on battery saver. I also saw some scientific reviews about the Galaxy Watch5 about tracking your sleep, etc. and while I think it is not the most accurate tracker out there compared to the rest, I do think it does a pretty great ... MoreI got this when it came out and its been a couple of months now that I've been using this thing. I also saw some scientific reviews about the Galaxy Watch5 about tracking your sleep, etc. and while I think it is not the most accurate tracker out there compared to the rest, I do think it does a pretty great job considering all of the other data it collects during your sleep, and exercises on the Samsung health app. I also like that this watch can last me days of about 2.5 days 24/7 even in my sleep with battery saving on. Next is comfortability. Compared to my previous one, I actually like this more as it doesnt feel uncomfortable whenever I do exercises or even just typing on a desk and most of the times I even forget it is there. One thing to note about the band however is that it doesnt seem to retain its original shape and forms around your arm after a while, but I am really fine with that. Another thing I want to talk about are the watch faces. Sure, there are a lot that might have watch faces with white backgrounds, but you can change most of those to be just black. I found some watch faces that are really good and informational, and if you like to tinker around a bit, you can actually create your own watch faces using WatchFaceStudio. The performance is still great even if it has the same specs as last gen, it can handle just about any task you want to do now and feels smoother than before because of the update I stated earlier. I also have to mention the Sapphire display. If you are concerned whether it does or does not, I thinm watching a youtube video will help and it is only for the display, not the sensor part. Overall, Im satisfied with this product and if you are planning to buy one I would recommend it, but the Watch5 Pro is also on sale I believe at this moment, but this is still a good purchase.

Nice watch overall, but worse fit than Active
23 November 2022

I had the Galaxy Watch Active for about 2 years and loved it! But it was showing its age, and I decided to trade it in for the Galaxy Watch 5.Watch 5 Pros: More durable materials, snappy interface, more features than ActiveWatch 5 Cons: Worse shape/fit on wrist, buttons are reversed, gapless band makes bad fit worse, totally flat screen seems to attract more fingerprints, looks "unfinished" with most watch bands that actually fit my wristBefore getting the Galaxy Watch 5, I had never thought about the shape of my wrists. Apparently I have a prominent ulnar bone and that makes my wrist shape more round instead of flat on top. A cross section of my wrist would look more like a circle than an oval. The way the lugs are positioned on the Watch 5, it creates a gap. ... MoreI had the Galaxy Watch Active for about 2 years and loved it! Apparently I have a prominent ulnar bone and that makes my wrist shape more round instead of flat on top. A cross section of my wrist would look more like a circle than an oval. The way the lugs are positioned on the Watch 5, it creates a gap. The Active sat much better on my wrist no matter what band I was using. For the Watch 5, I can only use certain bands that reduce the gap between the edges of the watch and my wrist. The gapless band (well, gapless to the watch) that comes with it creates huge gaps on the sides of my wrist because it can't even flex to the correct angle for me - oval wrists only! It also pushes the watch really hard into my arm to the point where it's uncomfortable, even when the band doesn't seem tight. It's just really trying to form that oval shape no matter what.I finally learned that bands where the buckle is close to the center of your wrist on the underside will help the watch stay in the right place on top. I was able to adjust a resin link watch band to give me a nice fit, but sometimes I want to just wear a sport band, and even my old silicone bands for the Active that are straight across at the pins don't sit quite right on my wrist. When it comes to actually using the watch, the features are great, just took a little getting used to the fact that the buttons are reversed from the Active. I think having the back button on top is more ergonomic, but it's not a huge deal. Samsung has done a nice job of making a Wear OS watch that still seems familiar for former Tizen users. But if Samsung released a Watch 6 that had the lugs positioned more like the Active, I'd trade this in in a heartbeat!

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5

On first impressions, the Galaxy watch 5 is extremely stylish and attractive, it fits well on the wrist and is very lightweight and comfortable. The instruction manual is short and sweet and tells you the basics and how to charge the watch etc but to properly set it up, you must have a compatible phone and be able to download the Samsung Wearable app. It doesn't take long to get used to the device and you'll soon find swiping back and forth to different apps and tiles becomes second nature. You are able to customise the screen to your liking by changing the layout, background and fonts and you're also able to rearrange your apps as well.So far it's been great to experience everything this watch has to offer and I've enjoyed trying out all of its functions and ... MoreOn first impressions, the Galaxy watch 5 is extremely stylish and attractive, it fits well on the wrist and is very lightweight and comfortable. This Watch is absolutely brilliant on the health aspect as well as being able to handle all the basics like calls and messages. The battery life seems to be really good so far and lasts me the whole day which is fantastic. Now for the reason I have deducted a star.Unfortunately the watch is not compatible for those who have tattoos in the area that you'll be wearing the watch and unless you search for this info online, Samsung are not very upfront about this issue which is disappointing. It still works as a normal watch but it can cause issues with notifications etc and will not perform the functions like blood pressure, heart rate monitoring and other diagnostic functions. When placed against an area of skin that has no tattoos, these functions all work fine but once it is placed on tattooed skin, they do not work. As tattoos are getting more and more popular and more people have them these days, this information should be provided upfront or hopefully in the future, Samsung can work on a fix for this issue.

Samsung has perfected the people's smartwatch

My wife, who doesn't like "techy things", wanted a fitness tracker for steps, calorie and sleep tracking that looked somewhat refined. After some online research I opted to get her the Galaxy Watch 5 44mm in white/ aluminum without the sim card option. This Galaxy Watch is user friendly, easily customizable and able to withstand some bumps, bounces and water submersion. The watch fits my wife nicely and she likes the bigger screen which makes touch control easier. The white silicone band with aluminum bezel color option will allow her to easily adapt the watch to different color/style bands in the future.Me being somewhat "techy" I had the watch paired and synced quickly with her Galaxy S22 Ultra (like 30 seconds to pair and sync) and had the watch customized to ... MoreMy wife, who doesn't like "techy things", wanted a fitness tracker for steps, calorie and sleep tracking that looked somewhat refined. If you are like my wife and not comfortable with the setup find a gamer kid/techy person in the family and tell him/her to have at it. They will be glad to help and may even find a few features you didn't know you wanted. I found setting this watch up for my wife's use was intuitive and fun.If you're already a Samsung Galaxy phone user, the Galaxy Watch 5 user interface has the familiar Samsung phone look and feel and you will enjoy interacting with the device throughout the day as Samsung adapted their intuitive UI to this watch and operations came naturally to my wife within a few hours. The preloaded Fitness App on the Galaxy S22 Ultra has deeper insights and is user friendly without additional costs. The app can be linked to other fitness, women's health and nutrition apps. The watch charges quickly with the included magnetic charging adapter plugged into a Samsung Fast Charger. With a full charge around 9p daily the watch lasts all day for my wife who receives constant messaging, social media and email notifications during the day.If you always have your phone within reach you may not want or need the Galaxy Watch version that has a sim card slot in it for data connection. Without the sim card the watch still allows music control and text /email reading/ quick response function. Having a sim card with phone/text/streaming ability seems a little much for most users as the phone to watch connection has good range. This watch uses a dedicated phone/watch connection when paired to a Galaxy phone which then allows the phone to keep Bluetooth connection to your earbuds or speaker, and I feel that this is suitable for most people who enjoy going to the gym or working around the house/yardIf you have a Samsung phone and want a user friendly, easy to understand watch with realistic health tracking, phone notification interfacing and music control the Galaxy Watch 5 without SIM card option is the best choice over Garmin or FitBit. Garmin is better for techy people or those needing true rugged style watch. Fitbit is better suited for people who like to spend money for no reason and/or iPhone users.

Small and Mighty

I have been wearing the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 for over a week now and I am really impressed by it. The display is brilliant, crystal clear and vibrant colours. The overall size of the Galaxy Watch5 is also great for a smaller wrist such as my own, it feels less intrusive than some of the other smart watches I've worn. The weight if the Galaxy Watch5 is also another plus point, it doesn't feel like you are wearing it most of the time, it's very comfortable to wear, especially at night when using to track your sleep. The look of the Galaxy Watch5 is also really smart, clean lines and minimalistic button help with the tidy overall feel. In comparison to other Samsung smart watches the missing bevel on the Galaxy Watch5 makes it a little less fluid to navigate through the menus, but the ability to sroll round the screen to speed through the navigation is a great way to counter the lack of bevel. The app catalogue from the Google Play Store seems to be getting a lot bigger with more compatible apps now available since earlier models of smart watches so this is a plus too. This makes it easy to check some of your regular phone apps on the go from the Galaxy Watch5, and the addition of Google Wallet is a huge plus for Android users, who may not own a Samsung phone, or those who chose not to use Samsung Pay. The app makes it perfect to paying for things with a simple flick of your wrist.I haven't explored them too much as of yet but there are a number of accessibility features that can be enabled in the settiny menu which is a great addition too, with the Talkback function and high contrast themes to help those who need this assistance to also use the Galaxy Watch5.All in all its an amazing little device for those looking for a smart watch to use day to day as an addition to your phone. The only little niggle is the battery life, its small. You are lucky ig you get a day and half use out of it, and that would be really limiting the use of it to achieve this length of time, so you will be charging it every day.

good battery life, less good strap
31 August 2022

This isn't my first smartwatch, and it isn't even my first galaxy watch. It holds its own against the competition and is a decent improvement on earlier models. The case is reasonably sized, and there isn't a whole lot of dead space between the edge of the display and the edge of the screen. The case of the watch is barely noticeable beyond the screen, and the black color makes it disappear even more. The band that comes with the watch is lacking, though. I do like the way it integrates with the lugs and matches the case shape, but it sticks out too far from the sides of the watch for people with normal-sized wrists (mine is 6.75" for you watch nerds). It does stick out less as the band gets broken in, but there's still too much of a gap between the strap and my ... MoreThis isn't my first smartwatch, and it isn't even my first galaxy watch. I do like the way it integrates with the lugs and matches the case shape, but it sticks out too far from the sides of the watch for people with normal-sized wrists (mine is 6.75" for you watch nerds). It does stick out less as the band gets broken in, but there's still too much of a gap between the strap and my wrist near the lugs. The strap material is comfortable enough, and I appreciate the way the tail of the strap tucks under itself after the buckle. But it could and should fit better. The lugs are a standard 20mm, so aftermarket straps should fit fine, but I didn't try any on this particular model. I was using this watch with a MS Surface Duo 2, and it paired fine, though I did have to download a plugin for the Samsung Wear app for it to work with this model. The watch faces that come pre-downloaded worked fine, though I could never get it to download additional faces. It always had problems "making the network connection." I did try the Facer app to load additional faces onto the watch, and that worked okay, but it seemed to have problems loading data other than the time and date onto the watch faces (like weather, heart rate, etc.). It may have been an issue with app permissions. Battery life was excellent. I wore it for 28 hours, including two (automatically detected) workouts, overnight (in sleep mode), and with the always-on display active, and there was still 30% of the battery left. You can easily get a full day out of this watch, and if you were using it less actively during that time, you might squeeze two days out between charges. It did a good job of importing previous settings from my Samsung profile, including Samsung Health settings. One new thing I tried out was the body composition detection. It came out fairly close to what my fancy floor scale tells me. Overall, a nice improvement on the previous generation, but not without a couple of minor flaws.
