The screen is good, the flip is novel (though I admit when I'm at home I just keep it unfolded on my desk or coffee table) and the software is Android with Samsung frills on it, so that's good too.Where it falls down for me is that while it's an Android phone, the transition from my old phone (also an Android) to this was not simple. I downloaded the Samsung smart switch and it asked me to do it wirelessly, then plug a cable in, then do it wirelessly and so on and so forth. You need to hold it with one and open with the other, so not terribly good on the accessibility front perhaps?A pain with Samsung is that it's menu is a horizontal scroll rather than vertical so it's not as easy to find an app beginning with W unless you have it on your homepages.The camera is great and a novel discovery was that you can turn on the front screen when using the rear facing camera, so that you can use the bigger/better camera to take a selfie and make sure you're actually in shot first.Overall it's a good phone, I'll get past the pain that was the first evening transferring it from my old phone and get used to it soon enough.Having now spent two weeks with the flip 5 while it's useful having a bigger screen on the front I'm not entirely sure that the cost difference between a four and a 5 is justified by that and the other small changes between the two. The biggest screen is useful for reading texts and responding to WhatsApp messages and things like that however the smaller screen on the flip 4 with perfectly adequate for showing simple notifications and more often than not I find myself looking at a notification on the cover screen and then opening the phone to respond anyway. Being a Samsung phone most of the apps that can use the cover screen are Samsung own apps.

The phone clearly is not ok and I told the last Rep I spoke to what happens if the phone fails after manufacture warranty ends because this obviously is bound to happen again, they did not care simply according to them is passed the return policy I mean What is this seriously, can they not see my struggle with a 2000$ phone? I was left with no choice and kept the phone. now right after manufacture warranty expired again for the 4th time the big screen would not turn on and the small screen touch screen would work sometimes, I would have to reboot the phone several times to get the only screen that would work to respond when touch it and to add to the fire wi-fi stops working it would not connect to Wi-Fi. At this moment I am beyond done with this I call Samsung and guess what they cant help warranty is expired. I got on a real fight with them and since they saw all the issues I previously had they did a one time exception to fix it BUT NOT TO REPLACE THE FAULTY Phone, Guess what as soon as get the phone back I'm trading it. as I mentioned the have they right idea and innovation but DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE THEY ARE MILES AWAY FROM GETTING IT RIGHT!!!!! Following on from the Z Flip 4 the 5 arrived, I have spent a little over 2 weeks with it now as a daily driver.Samsung made the delivery box a little special by adding some Flip details, packaging was smaller and more eco friendly.Comparison between the 4 and 5 are limited, much of the Z Flip 4 and features are the same such as the battery and camera which I would have expected to have a bump up. To Samsung's credit the gap between the screens has disappeared when closed, this is more impactful than people give it credit, however still there is no IP dust resistance which incredibly frustrating, a case is a must to limit dust egress.The external screen is a big step up, I never used it on the 4 as I found it too small and awkward and pointless. The Z Flip 5 external screen is clear and very useful to read and reply quickly to messages, however the pixel density is disappointing, I can see the pixels which is not what I have come to expect on a premium phone.Out of the box the use of the external screen is limited, you need to download additional Samsung tools to make it more functional, most users won't bother and this feels like a missed opportunity by Samsung to bring customisation to the masses.I used the 5 for selfies, the viewfinder use is a good idea as you can use the better external camera over the limited internal camera, I have yet to see if this can be used on video calls with colleagues.Build quality is great, I prefer the matt finish on the 5 to the metal parts, it brings a more polished feel over the shiny steel from the 4.OneUI has had no big changes between the 4 and 5, it is clean and simple, I do wish it was a little clearer at times and aligned more closely to standard Android out of the box.The transfer tool to move to the Z Flip 5, all my settings came across with a minimum of fuss, this was a real bonus and something that I have come to expect when changing devices.Lets move on to the biggest features of the phone that is largely overlooked, the new hinge is great, closing the phone completely flush with no gaps is great and the hinge design is clever, it feels smoother to use compared to the 4. But it's almost like a trick has been missed, there has been no reduction in the impact of the crease on the screen, it's still very noticeable in certain conditions and can be felt when scrolling.The Z Flip 5 is definitely evolution of an existing platform rather than revolution.

I loved the customisation you can do for the cover lock screen.Once I installed a third party app from the Samsung App store and enabled a cover screen feature, also recommended in various online reviews, I could use a lot more apps for music, contactless payments, ordering taxis, among other messaging, fitness and media apps. I definitely recommend doing that.With my medium use of the phone, the battery gets me through the whole day and then some, and the fast charger gets from 5% to 100% after 1hr 20min which was very quick. Fast charging does heat up the phone a bit and for better battery longevity I'd rather charge it up with a slower charger routinely. The battery settings interestingly had a setting to only charge to 85% for battery longevity which I need to read into more as I thought not charging to 100% would be worse for battery memory.Anyway, overall I love this phone and would fully recommend it if you can stomach the price or get a good deal on it then go for it. You'll enjoy using your phone in new ways and being able to fit it into smaller pockets is so much more convenient (despite making it a bit thicker this is definitely a great form factor!).

I don't consider myself biased or particularly bothered about brand loyalty. Samsung have always made some interesting and novel phones and android has always been a great system for a whole host of apps. I have to say at this point I think once the novelty of opening and closing it wore off, I started to see it as essentially just another android phone. Given the fact that I now have a phone with a known development issue and will be asked to pay an extortionate amount to fix it, with a high possibility it will break again in 12 months, it's left a bit of a bitter taste in the mouth with Samsung.If it was free to repair and largely clear that it was due to a common issue (and not just personal misadventure) then I'd be fine with losing my phone for a week here and there to get it sorted, but to pay on top is in my opinion, for a global corporation, absolutely ludicrous.When the screen eventually cracks completely and causes issues, I'll have to just fork out for a used iPhone/alternative android and will ultimately never purchase a Samsung again. Genuine shame as I've never really had major issues before, but can't justify the risk anymore.
